Saving my first car (85 iroc)

So the other day I got a came across this broken down camaro sitting behind someone's house that reminded me of my first car. I went and knocked on the door and asked the guy if he'd be interested in selling it and if I could take a look at it, he said sure. I got to looking at it, and I had this strange feeling that it was my iroc I bought back when I turned 16. I ended up find a price of paper with my name on it shoved down buy the passengers seat, and that sold me on it, I had to have it back. Sure it's now a rusted out basket case, that I'll sink a small fortune into, but it's my car. I got it bought for 300 bucks, which I feel was a steal. Trailered it home and made a nice spot in my already full garage for it. Started to tear into almost right away only to find out that this thing prolly should've been crushed. The car at some point received front end damge (core support is pushed back about a inch), big rust holes in the fenders that someone filled with expandable foam, switched over to carb from this, and the suspension was shot, and I mean shot, everything needs replaced. I'm planning on replace the 305 with a ls swap of some sort, my neighbor has a 7.0 out of his corvette totaled last year, but I also have a 6.0 long block that I was going to use in a 86 iroc that I sold, along with all the body and suspension work that it needs. I'm interested in hearing your guys thoughts and suggestions.

Congrats! I wish I could restore my first car but I totaled it when I was 18. The first car always has a spot in your heart so it will be worth the time for the sentimental value alone.

That it is does! I'm glad I found it. After having to sell my 86 and 87 irocs last year I knew I wanted another one.

Great story eruk. Glad you were able to be re-united with your first car. I hope you are able to make all of the needed repairs, and get it back on the road.

Good luck doesn't look all that bad for a 3 hundred dollar car.

Sentimental value makes it all worth it! I can't wait to see where you take it.

LOL I just love these cars over the years I've owned 7 of them and a trans am too. At one point I had enough spare parts to build another two cars lol.

There's actually really significant rust everywhere. Basically all sheet meat needs replaced, except for the roof. It looks like someone took a sanding disk to it and then rattle can primed it.

Re: Saving my first car (85 iroc)

Thanks guys I appreciate the support. I just wish I could've found it sooner before it got like this. Now I'm trying to decide on the engine and transmission combo I want to go with, I know it's going to be a ls based engine for sure. My neighbor said he'd sell me the 7.0 with the harness and ecm for 8000, but I already have a 6.0 long block that needs rebuilt from a 06 2500 truck. Any suggestions on which one would be the best bet?

Re: Saving my first car (85 iroc)

So I finally found some time to start to tear into her today. Lots of rust, I mean a lot. I had a soft spot by the strut tower on the drivers side that I was able to push my finger through it with little resistance. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to fix this, the underside is pretty far gone too? I'm going to try to get the fenders and the nose off today hopefully, looks the the fender mounting tab on the drivers side is all bent to hell. Should be a fun time trying to get that bolt out.

Here is a pic before i shoved my finger through it lol.

And after.
