Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

Out of town for work, but before I left I picked up this gem

I will take more pictures later but the rear axle is a strange 12 bolt. 33 spline shafts limited slip the whole works. Car came as a roller but a folder full or receipts. The receipt on the axle was 2500. The car also has a Dakota digital dash, and a Hurst dual gate shifter. Paid 800 for it.

Next thing I got from the guy was a Holley stealth ram intake with throttle body and fuel rails for 250

I brought the intake with me to iowa and I am giving it a little love in the motel room with 2000 grit sandpaper and some polishing compound. Will post up more pictures when I am at the motel.

Wow, sounds like you stole all of that. Nice work. And bonus points for polishing the intake in your hotel room.

New developments as of an auction that closed on eBay...

This is just a teaser but I really have seemed to fall off the deep end now.

Here we are, thanks to a late night eBay auction my motor build has changed for the third time. That's a D-1 procharger. This definitely makes the whole car a bit more exciting for me.

Everything was pretty ugly when it came out of the box.

Just polishing my life away. What I really need is an adapter to wet sand with my drill. Right now all my wet sanding is done by hand.

Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

Someone hogged this intake out pretty good. I has a 1206 gasket and it was all the way out to that and the gaskets between the plenum and runners I threw away but it looked like they were nipping the sides of it when they ported them out. One comment a guy made was, isn't 4 bolts a bit wimpy when you're going to be pushing air through with a procharger? I never thought about it but it does make sense.

The next thing that makes me scratch my head is all the welding that has been done. I'm not too concerned about it, the only question it really raised in my mind was why? Did they port too far and have to repair it? I don't think so because both sides have the same welding on it. Confusing but not really scaring me off by any means.

Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

Looks to me like someone put a little time in on the plenum as well. I don't see anything wrong with the port work they have done. It all should make for a decent pro-charged engine I think. I have had quite a few people tell me that on a boosted engine, don't waste your time with porting and all that.
I think that boosted or not, you are probably leaving some power on the table.

It is cold in Wisconsin and my work area is not heated. I am not ready for this weather. We are in the low 30's out there. Currently taking the dakota digital dash out of the donor.

Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

Back at it. Taking more stuff off the donor.
It's an RS and it has some rot on the driver floor and a pretty big dent in the rear quarter panel. It's sad to say but I am not sure this one will be rebuilt. It may be destined for the scrap heap once all good parts are scavenged. Anyway, I had a 10 bolt from a 4th gen and the stock lcas and panhard bar from my car so I got that beautiful 12 bolt out of the car today.

Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

It is a diamond in the rough. It has the LSD additive tag on the cover and I can get the tires to turn independent of each other so right now it's looking exactly like I wanted. I wasn't sure about the South Side machine lift bar setup. Thought about using them for my car. Then I cut them off then axle with a torch. So that solves that problem.

Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

I am out of town. Again, some more. I left my home February 10th. I was back for a three day weekend in April and now I am back on the road again for work.
I am making good money on the road so that will help to move things along when I am home.
For anyone who is curious I am a millwright.
First job was in New Mexico for 5-6 weeks, second job in Texas for a week and a half, now I am in Nebraska for 2 weeks.
I sent some money home for the paint job the car needs
My brother Ryan did just pick up a T56 transmission with bell housing, clutch, flywheel etc. Moving further and further towards a pro touring/track day style car.

New engine in!

SO painted the underhood to match the factory color.
I welded and then smoothed a few of the factory seams inside the engine compartment to make it look cleaner.
Then i started on the accessories. I purchased a set off a later car from Jack at camaro hill. Really nice guy. Clean, sandblast then black chassis paint on those.
made new battery cables. I have been working on the car for the last week.
I will take more pictures when I make it back home tonight!

Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

As of right now. That motor made 505hp on the dyno and for simplicity sake i am leaving the procharger off. I've had this car forever and I don't love the idea of adding a rollcage or a rollbar. Also i have a T56 but i decided to run the built 700r4 and 3500rpm stall for now. I bought a 2008 Viper and thats my road course car and im not sure i want to swap to the six speed anymore.

Re: 1986 Build Thread- Finally

Last night we chipped away some more. Going away from the factory v belt system to a later year serp system. So we have to move the alternator plug to the driver side and also change the plug to the other style. Moving right along. Another order was made to Summit Racing, a couple AN fittings, holley dominator fuel filter and other odds and ends. Still 240 dollars worth of stuff. 🤒
looking at the car i keep getting that "so close" feeling one minute and then back again to the "never going to finish" feeling. Rollercoaster of emotions but having fun enjoying the build.

Glad you're back at it. I had Southside Machine Bars on my Firebird and they actually worked really well. I had to methodically grind the welds down to get them off my original 10-bolt to transfer to the 9-inch I ended up using.

I cut those off of the 12 bolt and actually i think we ended up using them on another project some where I'm not sure. They looked interesting and I hear they work well but I went with my gut and stayed with a factory style setup in the rear.

Ran each bolt in to make sure they all went in without issue.

Here is the bracket cleaned and sand blasted

took my die grinder with a sandpaper disc on it and took down the casting marks

Test fit, looks good. This waterpump did not jive on the passenger side so i took a little material off the bracket already. Now its really looking good.

Remanufactured pump, inside of the old reservoir. Cleaned everything really well, wipe it down with grease and wax remover, then sprayed with chassis black paint.

There it is. Installed with a new high pressure line. ARP stainless 12 point bolts and blue locktite on everything.

Installed the AC delete pulley. Ugly but it is what it is. I can change it later if need be.

I haven't updated in a bit but it runs with the new motor! Took it up and down the block. Then back into the shed and did a nice burnout. Those wheels are off the car again. Didnt have the correct coil driver to let the holley sniper control the ignition so we dropped a HEI in that we had laying around. I'm in the shop now playing with the ignition and cleaning the interior.

Been getting some miles on the car. Needs the new cervani hood painted. The dash lights don't work, stereo is useless and I think my single 3" exhaust is really holding the car back but other than that loving it

12.3 quartermile

Took the car down to the dragstrip last night for test and tune. The track is not prepped and I'm on Firestone indy 500's so that might help explain my slow 60'. This is a personal best for this car though!!! Feels much better than the 12.9 I ran last time out

700r4
Tore the transmission back out of the camaro. Broke her bad, again! This time going to a 5 gear planetary should be back together and into the car soon. Winter is here and the car isn't coming out until the salt is off the roads.
