I pulled the injectors out of the chromed rail but cant seem to get anything to come up on them in searching the internet. Number on them is 01d180b.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
My buddy that helped me set the engine and trans in it came over this evening and we had them bolted in the mounts in a little over 30 minutes. My engine hoist wont go in far enough with the metal bumper reinforcement bolted on so got a little creative for that last amount needed.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
Pulled the ecm out today and it is going to Jim at TPIS so he can do his magic for the new combination since it had been set up prior for the high compression 302.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
I'm waiting on a new rear u joint for the aluminum driveshaft [ wasnt aware prior that the alum shafts use a different one] but got most of the rest of the bottom side buttoned up yesterday and this afternoon. Starter is on and wired, knock sensor wire repaired, motor mount bolts tightened, speedo hooked up, torque arm bolted up, clutch cylinder bolted up, sensors plugged in and the y-pipe bolted in place.
Topside I have the wiring layed out, the grounds bolted to the back of both heads and the mechanical fuel gauge hooked back up.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
I had the top mostly together and figured I needed to test fuel pressure ahead of getting the ecm back and when I did I discovered that the pressure bled off pretty quick after taking power away from the pump.
Runners and plenum back off and started checking everything that had fuel. No leaks anywhere, no dripping injectors and the regulator diaphragm looked good but I went ahead and put a new one in it while it was apart. I'm pretty sure its in the new Walrbro fuel pump and a defective check valve based on reading others having the same issue with new Walbros.
Anyway got the rest of the top side buttoned back up today. I had ordered a new radiator and it came in damaged so waiting on another.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
I think I'm ready to start it once I get the ecm back. Installed a new radiator and hoses, have all the heater hoses ran and a few more odds and ends. I dont have the fans yet but they should be here in a few days.
. New radiator installed.
. Have all the hoses on it but not putting clamps on the upper one until I get the fans bolted in place.

Once it was dropped off and I started going over the car in a lot more detail I determined it wasnt our Firehawk car but what was it? Searching and searching online I came across the auction on BAT a couple years back for another Morrison Cook car that had been sold and with 300 plus pictures in that listing I started seeing lots of similarities yet the cage in mine had a couple differences. The car was now hot rod black but could tell it was originally white. The guy 2 owners prior to me had passed away but had been preparing the car to run at Bonneville. A title search showed that the car had not been titled until 2005 and then it was to Matt of GMMG. Nobody has talked to him in years so another dead end. I talked some with John Heinricy to see what he remembered about the cars and he was very helpful.
At that point I was pretty sure I had one of the Morrison Cook cars but initially thought it was the #97 since the car marked as #98 had already surfaced. A couple weeks and we finally got the copy of the original dealer invoice from Chevrolet and was blown away. The car had been special ordered by Morrison Cook Motor Sports and turned out to be 1 of the first 2 they ordered. At that point I started sanding through the black paint on it and found the original white with red and blue stripes and gray/silver bottom.
Through more research I figured out this was the actual #98 car that won the championship in 88 and then the car was raced as both #97 and #98 in 89. The original #97 car was rolled at the first race in 88 and my car went on to win the race. When we pulled the tank out we discovered it still had the tech writing with Sear Point and car 98 written on top from where it went through post race tech. The SCCA log book number on the cage also correlates into that first race.
Current plans are to do a cosmetic and mechanical restoration on it putting it back as close to how it raced in 88 however not a full restoration as I want to leave as much of any original areas that we can. We've done a little to it and started accumulating parts but it will prob be next Summer before it gets a space in my shop and we really get started on it.
Thought these race results would be good to post here as they don't seem to be posted anywhere on this site, hope all continues to go well with the rebuild as you're getting close to taken her for a spin.

Thanks. I have them but dont think I ever posted them . After hearing about the car being rolled at a race but finishing I had to use them to figure out it had been at Road America.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
I got it running today for the first time since prob the early 90's. Could not have gotten that done without the help from Jim Hall and TPIS.
I got the ecm and tune back yesterday from him and plugged it back in and no start. No fuel pump cycle, no ses light at start up so swapped the pump relay out. Then checked the fuse by the battery. It was ok at first but still no pump. In pulling the fuse in and out I noticed it would arc key off and I eventually popped it. Swapped relays again and then had the pump and ses back but still no start. Just spun and spun and acted like no spark.
Slept on it and got the test light out and started checking hots. I had reused the distributor that came in the L98 so pulled it and dropped the new one in that was in the fresh engine that was junk. Car fired right up and ran. I didnt have coolant in it and need a pipe to join the exhaust but was very happy with it.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
Got the rear end cover back on, fluid filled and modified the cover to replicate what Morrison Cook did originally. Still need to figure out one more piece of what they used.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
Jim set the ecm up to do away with the 9th injector stuff so I was able to pull that sensor out of the front of the intake and install a probe there for a mechanical temp gauge.
.
I just have this setting in place at the moment, once mounted the plate and gauges move up so there is no opening at the top.
.

Interesting. Is that some sort of additional breather, or a 'fill extension' so they could add more oil to the differential?

I think its dual purpose. It replaces the rubber plug used from the factory and I believe its supposed to have some sort of vent/filter on top. That is the piece I'm still working on locating.
I posted this way earlier in the thread but the SCCA magazine from 88 or 89 mentioned that during a pit stop at one race the Morrison Cook guys swapped the rear end assembly in one of the cars in just under 2 minutes......

They did not. I know from our Firehawk experiences we had to rebuilt the 9 bolt chunks after each race because of the mods and how locked up we were running them.

When I picked up my Dana 44 in Indiana in 2010, I bought it from an SCCA racer. He worked at the Dana plant there and bought it new in the early 90's when they were over the counter replacements for the guys that were blowing up their 10 bolts in various racing classes.. When I got it, it had been modified for track racing. Besides the ratcheted lower mount for the pan hard bar, the cover had been fitted with a bung similar to what you have on yours. That, as was my understanding, was for a differential cooler. If I'm not mistaken, it was driven off of the driveshaft via a Gilmour belt.
Just throwing that out there. I can't imagine your race car wouldn't have a similar cooler.

I could see that, but one would expect to see a suction side, low on the diff or cover. I'd expect something that high up would be the return?
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
These cars did not run them. As mentioned the cars with coolers require 2 lines, 1 in and 1 out. They also had a pulley behind the yoke and a pump mounted by the rear end none of which was allowed on Escort and Firehawk series cars.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
I had a spare set of lace wheels on my 72 Firebird so pulled them off and did a color change from gold to white and put them on the car temporally. I still need to buy tires but will have 1 set of wheels for street use and a different set for track days.
The early 88 picture from the SCCA Archives shows long lug nuts being used and I was finally able to track down a set of those.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
Got it down off the jack stands and drove it out of the shop for the first time. Have a driveline vibration to sort out and still have about 3 pages of things to do to it but it moves now.

Thanks. I'm just an amateur at best and could pick the car apart but at the end of the day I feel good about it as I did it mostly by myself. A guy looked at it the other day and couldnt believe where I painted it at.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I have to drop the tank back out and if so will prob just pull the rear so we can do a gear change and bearings as I think that is where the driveline vibration is. I picked up a new 3.70 gear for it and it already had new axle bearings so just need the carrier and pinion bearings now.

Congrats on a successful drive!! While a refresh of the diff is probably not a bad idea, especially since you have a shiny new gear to try out, have you tried turning the driveshaft 180-deg at the pinion? That could help with diagnosis, but even better if it cured the problem. Keep up the good progress!!

Thanks. Kinda have it on hold at the moment while I build some funds back up but right now everything from the trans back is suspect. Part of the problem with a build like this where everything was missing and using used/untested parts.
I moved it today and wishing I hadnt put a puck style clutch in it but time will tell.
. Pulled it out of my lower shop to put the 56 in there.
. Moved up top and in the carport for the Winter or until I drop the tank back out.

hi I acquired this car last year was sitting in a garage for 25 years. now havung fun with it. will be running the ford, chevy challenge willow springs nov 8 the vin tag on this car is **02** SIX DIGITS ORIGINAL 1998 ecort car any info would help. thank you
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
Congrad's on the new toy, did you mean 1988 or 1998 as shown? Welcome, your vin 1402 would have been built sooner than this one, I'm not too far off either. Do you have a copy of the invoice from GM?

If is is a 1988 and the vin is earlier than mine it would make this car the one that John rolled first race of 88 running as #97 and while orig was told that car was destroyed it would infact mean it wasnt and got rebuilt. He def needs to contact GM Heritage for a copy of the original invoice.

I have a lot of the history on the Morrison Cook Camaros yet there are missing items too including possibly one of the 1989 model year cars. Feel free to send me a message and I can hopefully tell you more about yours after some questions. Also any pictures would be helpful including the cage and engine plenum. To the best of my knowledge the Sony front plates were only ran at the Mosport 24 hour race. The car pictured also has the decalling on it that was used in 89 . The door number shapes, stripe drop offs and even some of the sponsor decals changed size and shapes over the 2 years MC raced the Camaros. Cage designs also changed from 1 car to the others.
Morrison Cook from my research had at least 7 cars however only 5 of those 7 saw race use.
2 1988 cars ordered before the 88 season. Both of these cars will have Morrison Cook Motor Sports on the original invoices from GM. I own one of the 2. The other was rolled at its first race and thought to have been destroyed.
Car #3 was bought from dealer inventory to replaced the rolled #97. This was the car sold a few years back on BAT.
Car#4 and 5 were production line damaged cars sent to MC to build race cars from for the 1989 season however I believe at least 1 of those cars raced the last race of 88. It is unsure if these cars were 88 or 89 model years. One of these cars is owned by Bruce Hawkins and is considered the 1989 #97 championship car. It was bought directly from John. One of those cars is/was still unaccounted for.
Car #6 and 7 were special ordered by MC to modify to race in the 1990 season however never were as they went back to Corvettes. I have a good idea where one of those is but not the other.
It would be interesting to narrow down if your car is the rebuilt rolled original #97, one of the missing production line damaged cars or.....yet another car to add to the history.

Did a little digging and the car pictured above with the Sony front tag looks to be the one that won the race at Blackhawk Farms in 89 with Doc Bundy as the primary driver. I think at that race Don Knowles was doing double duty in both the number 97 and 98 and was Docs co driver in the 98 having to fill in. The car did have the Sony tag at that race while the #97 did not. I'm speculating here but think that car was 1 of 3 MC had at Mosport but wasnt ran as they only used 2 of the 3 there however would explain the Sony tag still in place. I can narrow it down and/or confirm with more info and pictures once we converse.

Here's the car at the start, I still haven't been able to locate the results of this ford vs Chevy race. Was anyone else in attendance at Willow Springs I heard it was more of a car show than racing. Also to sell condo's at the old track, good to see so much participation.

Here's a recent shot of the JL156 BAT car on the track in 2022 and a great video of the car from the inside running Blackhawk Farms just last year. Great to see they're still having fun with it.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
I never heard back from Manny with any more info on his car but after documenting the first car that Morrison Cook built for the 89 season from production line damaged cars Mannys car would have MCM 89 Car 2 where the vin tag was I do believe.
Re: Morrison Cook #98 SCCA Escort World Champion 88 Iroc
I havent been able to get mine back in the shop since moving it out last year but hopefully in a few months I'll be able to free up some shop space. I did have the glass guy come out and put a new windshield in it. They just had the universal thicker trim so I ordered the correct one in from Hawks prior to the glass guy coming out.
I havent bolted the hood louvers down yet as I need to finish buffing the hood and then wax it.
