I have a 69 Pace Car convertible but have been wanting another 3rd Gen convertible for awhile when this one came up for sale.

Has quite a few issues the seller never disclosed but has an interesting story to go with it. The car had been nicknamed Code Red and just recently ran the Southern Classic from Lakewood to Texarkana and back finishing 3rd in the Out;aw class.

Some background on the Southern Classic. There are a few exceptions on the 83 and older requirement on Fox body Mustangs and 3rd Gen Camaros because their platforms started prior to 83.

The original plan was to just drive it, enjoy it and use it as a backup daily but now not sure as I hadnt planned on having to fix a bunch of safety related items up front. I put more in it than I should have due to the back story so for now will just have to suck it up and start making repairs. Should I keep it long enough I would like to put the correct color seats and carpet back in it.

Thanks, I got it from the guy who ran the car this year and I prob have gotten too old to attempt it myself, lol but a good friend of mine ran his Mustang this year and finished 2nd in Outlaw just minutes ahead of this car. He was 8th out of the 40 and this car was 9th overall out of 40 iirc.

Give me a few days for it to quit raining here and when I get back on it I'll take a bunch. I also have the mock up engine for my Morrison Cook #98 car in the basement that I have been piecing the smog stuff back together on but its an 1988. I believe it to be the same however I know 87 back uses a metal tube across the back of the engine for the air tube off the manifolds and 88 uses a rubber hose which I dont have yet but assuming 91 does too.

This was my last Z/28 convertible, 92 Heritage model. Had I known how few they made at the time I prob would have held onto it. I've had lots of other 3rd Gens since but guessing that was 20 years ago or more. The 69 Pace Car next to it was the 2nd of those that I have had and have another one now at the paint shop after building it the last 8 years or so.

Re: Picked up a 1991 Z/28 convertible.
Just updating this thread as its been in a buddies shop for awhile and he has been going back through and fixing a lot of the mechanical issues we found.

They had the wrong seals and axle bearings in the rear end and of course it soaked the rear brakes in rear end oil. The right front caliper was frozen on the spindle so basically they ran the event with only 1 front caliper functioning correctly. All of that has been corrected now with new seals, bearings and brakes.

It developed an intermittent no start due to the vats so that has been bypassed and appears to have been the cause of the electrical draw it had as its no longer draining the battery.

The new shifter cable that was installed prior to the event wouldnt let it go into park all the time so I've picked up another after the first couldnt adjust this issue out.

I think we are down to him pulling the column now and making repairs to it which should also correct the headlight and blinker issues.

Before I sent it to him I took the passenger door apart and repaired the regulator in it and got the passenger window going up and down without coming out of the tracks, panel bonded the rear spoiler back together that had came apart during the event and temping in a rear window.

They just posted the recap for the 2023 event and you can see the car in the beginning as it was one of the first car to leave out and then it is seen off and on once everyone has returned.

Looks like the video link above isnt working now but it can be found by searching Southern Classic 2023 youtube.

I got the car back over the weekend so going to put a few miles on it .

Re: Picked up a 1991 Z/28 convertible.
I'm upside down in what I put in the car thinking it was a higher quality car so figured I might as well get some enjoyment from it and start using it as a daily and running errands in it to keep the miles off my truck.
