Hello everyone,
My father and son recently bought this garage kept 1987 Iroc z for what we believe is a really good price, As you can see in one of the pics the odometer is 37469 miles, is that considered a low mileage car or an extremely low mileage car. I also posted a Pic of the codes is there anything that stands out as more desirable, I know it has the lb9 engine does that hurt value not having the 350. It's really a clean car. What would the value be we have absolutely no idea. I can try to answer any questions if ya'll have any. Thanks in advance
From: Franklin, KY near Beech Bend Raceway, Corvette Plant and Museum.
Car: 1992 Pontiac Firebird
Engine: 5.0L L03 TBI
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 2.73
Re: New low mileage 1987 irocz owner with questions
It's a beautiful IROC-Z in excellent condition in my favorite color. I'm a Firebird guy so I'm going to call it Flame Red Metallic. I'm sure Chevy called it something else like maybe Dark Red Metallic. No matter where I see this color it's always going to be Flame Red Metallic to me. If I was the type of guy that painted his fingernails this would be the color.
37k is low mileage to me.
The car is optioned out pretty nice but it doesn't have any of the performance options. It's a cruiser not a bruiser.
Does it hurt this car's value because it's not a 5.7L L98 car? No. Because this car isn't a 5.7L L98 car. This car is what it is. Its value can't be hurt because it's not something else. Would a 1987 5.7L L98 IROC-Z optioned like this car with the same mileage and in the same condition be worth more? Oh Hell yeah all day long it would be worth more.
As to the value IDK because Camaros aren't my thing. I fall over dead seeing the prices IROC-Zs bring compared to Trans Am GTAs. How that door decal can be worth 10s of thousands of dollars more blows my mind because the GTA is the better car by far. Though an IROC-Z could have been ordered almost on par with a GTA. Some people like chocolate ice cream and some like strawberry.
The Camaro guys will chime in later on. They would have a good idea as to value. Also search Bring a Trailer of past auctions of 1987 IROC-Zs with similar options, mileage, and condition to get an idea for yourself.

Thanks i appreciate it,
I think my son wants to take it to a couple local shows, to kind of gauge some interest
Re: New low mileage 1987 irocz owner with questions
Yes. 37K is low mileage for a 3rd gen F body. You car looks great and I don't think that it matters all that much if it's a 5.0 vs a 5.7L TPI.
How old is your son? Is he trying to gauge interest to figure out if it is a cool car OR does he know that it is a cool car and he's trying to figure out if other people like it as well?
My younger daughter is 20 and she really wants a black IROC. It is amazing that a few really young people think that these old Camaros are super cool.

Oh. Now I get it! The car project is being done by grandpa and grandson. Your dad and your son.
So cool that young people are liking these "about 40 year old" cars.

Stunning car, great find. I wouldn't call it a "project" car though. Only thing that i saw is the color of that liquid in the expansion tank. Hope thats not the orange stuff
Re: New low mileage 1987 irocz owner with questions
Nice find! You can check values on Bring a Trailer. A similar car with 38K miles sold in August of 2024 for $22K. The market has fallen off a bit since then. My estimate on that car would be $17K-$20K. If you got it for a good price, hang on to it, keep it in nice condition and enjoy it! Yes, if it was a 5.7, it would be worth more or if it had G92 option and a 5 speed with the LB9 engine, that would boost it some as well, but if it is an all original car with original paint, it is worth solid money..
Re: New low mileage 1987 irocz owner with questions
I bought my '87 in 2017 with 32k miles and feel it is low, but not super low miles. While the options make a difference on value, unless you are selling who cares? It's gorgeous and enjoy it. An '87 is the best looking 3rd gen and you got Ttops. Drive on.

Before I owned my IROC, someone converted it to Dexcool. I've owned the car since spring 2013 and have had zero issues with it. That being said, I flush it every few years and all of my gaskets are fel-pro rather than paper/rtv.
Re: New low mileage 1987 irocz owner with questions
This one might actually be a true low miles survivor with 37K. These cars only have 5 digit Odometers so it's not uncommon for people to claim a car with 100K+ is only 5 figure miles. But looking at the condition of the interior, weather stripping, paint, etc from the pics, it looks like a true survivor.

I agree with this. Another thing to look for is a really dirty engine bay. Most low mileage cars will have a clean engine bay.
