My first car - 88 Firebird

It's my first car, it looks beat but it runs good. It has a auto 2.8.
My dad being a mechanic we got it running and I started on the interior. Seats from the junkyard and I redid the headliner and the rear speaker covers also built a crappy box for the trunk to how my 2 12in JL's that were given to me. I should also be getting an exhaust for in the next week to get it inspected. We also did many other things like door lock, handles, and My dad and I did the heater core. It has 160k miles but it seems like the people before me really took care of the motor

Any future plans for it?

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

Thanks

Future plans, first after I get it Inspected (some time this week), and when the weather gets nicer there's a little bit of rust starting i want to fix. Maybe a paint job, I would like a 3.4 swap with a 91/92 front end with GTA wheels. Nothing really to serious. Oh, a louvers.

Not interested in a v8 at all? I would think of swapping a v8 instead of another v6, but that's just me.

The insurance is going to go up alot if I was to do a V8 and I think it would get me in trouble. V8 + 16y/o + friends = bad

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

Doesn't matter what engine is under the hood, man. I'm 19, I know how you feel. I do things with my car that I would definately get in trouble for if I was to get caught, lol, but the thing is, even if it is a v6, you can still get in trouble with it. Just be smart and don't do stupid crap in it.

As far as insurance goes, I haven't seen many insurance companies that ask about engine size. Mine's a 305 and I don't pay much at all. Like I said, I'm 19... not much older than you. lol.

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

What would happen then if I put say a 5.0 in it I got in a car accident and the Company reds the VIN which says V6 and its a V8? Travelers gets the VIN to insure the car and they said it would go up a few hundred with a V8

Go with a different insurance company? Progressive is pretty cheap for us third gen guys. Check with farmers too.

I can't, The cars insured with the other 3 cars in my family and my parents and I split the bill ( I drive 3/4 cars and I'm still on my permit (My parents are always with me when I drive) )

Insurance didn't change for me.. I've got a $16,500 accident and a $110 ticket under my belt, and to upgrade to my 91, it was a $10 difference. Neat, eh?

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

Clean looking car, nice find

if you can, shop around for insurance it will be worth your while.

I'm 16, and have an 88 305
now when i had Allstate for insurance they wanted just about $300 per month for me alone
I shopped around and found mercury and they wanted about $200 for my dad, my brother, and me, with a total of 3 cars. so being the youngest i pay half, so $100 a month isnt bad

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

For myself and my girlfriend both, driving both my car, '86 Trans Am and her 91 Camaro RS, it's about $110 a month. She's 18 and I'm 19. For some reason, when it's just me with my car alone, it's around $135, but with us both and with both cars, it's much cheaper. lol. Don't know why... but hey, I'm not complaining.

I think it's cheaper because lots of companis have a multiple policy discount so if you insure more vehicles you save more money. I'm 19 and my insurance for my 2001 Ram 1500 Comprehensive and my 90 GTA with just liability comes to just over three hundred a month...

..... Man i wish my g/f drove an F-Body

insurance companies go by the vin if it shows a v6 that's what they go by don't matter if it has been swapped to a v8

Yeah my g/f won't drive mine because it's a stick and he can't drive one. She can handle one but can't drive one haha. And i told her there's no way I'm letting her grind the gears in my T/A haha. I think she truly hates my car because it gets so much womanly attention haha. But she didn't spend her money on it so whatevs. Sorry to hijack the thread there.

I'm a big fan of that new wheel and 4 point. Looks very clean. I'm gonna go ahead and say that car is gonna guarantee back seat action for a high school student such as yourself! Clean car. Keep it up. Personally i would go for a V8... even just a 305 would be good. Are you going to change the Rear Axle? What's in it for a ratio now?

I have been doing some research on a 4th gen rear but its wont matter unless I have the money which I don't right now. And to be honest Im unsure of the ratio thats in it

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

Good plan. When i bought the GTA the prev owner put 2.92 in it so I bought all the ness stuff to convert back to 3.42. I would just recommend changing the gears so that the 3.4 still has a lot of jump to 'er even though the V6 birds are not slow. Again, awesome work and keep it up

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

Ya I agree you should shop around a bit. You should be able to find it cheaper. I think personally you should go with a V8, even if it is more it shouldn't be to much. Im only 16 and this next summer im putting a 350 twin turbo in mine and i don't care if they raise my insurance cause im going to do what i want lol. Im not going to tell the insurance company so it shouldn't anyway lol. Check my before and after pictures out of my car mabe you will get some inspiration for your car.

Re: My first car - 88 Firebird

Im not going to do anything about the insurance because I only have to pay my parents 100$ and month and I'm happy with that and since I have to pay for everything for my car, Im going to keep it a V6, Maybe this summer I might do a junkyard 3.4/T-5 and depending on money maybe a small turbo. But if I want a V8 later, I'll sell this and buy one. I think it's too much work + money for a swap.
