New project - 91 Formula
OK, I've decided to fix this thing up and build it nice. Had it for sale, but I had an idea for it so I'm going to run with it.
I bought this thing a few months back, got it for a steal. Has a bad transmission and bad paint, but the interior isn't bad and it only needs a front fender to make the body perfect.
It is a brilliant red metallic 91 Formula with the 305 TBI and 700R4.
The steering column is fubared, so I just bought a new one from F-body Ranch. Once I get it in I'm going to install the column and start getting it ready for paint.
Plans are:
GTA wheels (got em this week thanks to my buddy Jon)
TPI intake swap (got it in the shop, just need a few more parts for swapping)
Swap out the 700R4 for a better one (getting one off my best friend, finally convinced him to do his T5 swap in his IROC)
TA taillights
Dark tinted windows
Hot Rod Black paint
Gloss black Formula decals
Some undecided suspension work
This thing is going to look sinister. I'm going to be starting on it in the next few weeks, I've been out of town a lot for work, so once I'm back home again I'm going to get started.
PICS!

Re: New project - 91 Formula
nice lookin project!
My TA was in about the same shape when i picked it up! I paid $2100 for it with the same condition paint as yours but mine has a 350TPI swap with a nice set of heads and a street cam along with ROH wheels and bolt ons.
Any pics of the rest of your interior? It looks like those door panels and front seats look like they are in good shape, im curious to see the rest of it.

After lookin' at your car, I don't know if I want a pre 91' or a 91-92 spoiler like yours. Just cant seem to decide.

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Love the color! I got mine for a steal a few years ago, drove it for a week, and will finally be driving it this winter. Yours will look sweet when it's done. I love the 91-92 Formulas, they do look sinister for sure. Here is mine. I'm thinking of selling the wheels and getting some mesh style Boze wheels. Good luck and post progres pics.

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Went to the junkyard and bought a 16198262 ECM, TPI wiring pigtails, and some other stuff. I have a couple complete TPI setups in my shop, so I'm going to convert this thing to TPI!

Damn, every time I see a 91-92 Formula I want to hit my head into a wall. While I do like my 89 gta I only bought it because I couldn't find a nice 91-92 Formula.

Looks like a great project!! I'm a fan of 91-92 Formulas myself. Something about them IMO makes them look so much more bad *** than other 3rd gens

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Did a bit of work to the car. I rebuilt the headlight motors with some Delrin rod I had in the shop.

And I tinted the taillights. They looked kind of worn out, so I cleaned them up and used some of that tint spray on them. They look killer now.

And I also pressure washed the engine. TPI swap coming soon.

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Oh, and I also installed the new steering column that I got from Thirdgen Ranch. When I bought it they said it had "a bit of play and is in good condition" but this thing is damn near mint. I've owned a bunch of third gens, even mint ones, and this column is about the best I've seen! THANKS!

Hey birdman nice car! I love those 91-92 Formulas, don't see many. I see you live in Raleigh. I'll look for your car around town. I drive a black 88 GTA (Trans Am decals) with gold wheels. I'd love to see your ride some time.

Definitely man! I'm up in North Raleigh by Lead Mine/Strickland. Where are you at?
You should come out next Thursday, some of the Raleigh guys from the Triad F-body club get together at the Char-grill off of Strickland on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7:30.

I live in oakwood. Straight down Glenwood from you close to downtown. That sound like fun, I'd love to see some other F-bodies that are roaming around town. I'm headed out of town either Thurday or Friday but if I can't make it maybe I'll shoot for the next Thursday you all are meeting up.

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Jon, I've already got the harness, computer, TPI setup (some weird guy gave it to me.
), and fuel pump. If I went LS in this car I'd have to buy a drivetrain, no money for that!
I may hit you up some wiring help on it, we can drink some beer and do some wiring.

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Wiring a newer TBI car to TPI is easy
Move Pin D to Pin K on the C207 (speedo engine harness side) and bridge the buffer box pins C to F
Changes Id suggest are moving the power wires OFF the starter to a remote power block like I used in my LSx swap and tidying the routing for a minimalist appearance

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Wait, I won't need to use the computer and all? I guess because a 91 would already be SD, right?
So all I really need to do is splice in the injector pigtails, extend the other wires, put a new fuel pump in, and repin the ECM? I guess I'll need a new memcal too, but is that it?
****, I could have that done in the time it would take you to drive to my house!

Re: New project - 91 Formula
Gotcha. So I still need to use this ECM I've got. Need to get a memcal, but I've got everything else.
I've done a bunch of research on doing an SD TPI swap into an 89, but not much on a 90-92.
I may be hitting you up, beer is always cold at my shop.
