1982 Trans am. Central IL

Hello all. New member here. I've had a few F bodies over the years. First car was a 78 6.6, 2nd- 79 Z28, 3rd-1990 RS, and 4th- a 1989 Formula. I still dream from time to time that I open a shed back home on the farm and find one of them still there waiting. Confused, and excited, I wonder how I forgot her, and proceed to wake up disappointed. My wife never had the joy of ownership, but drooled over several, and still does. All this changed recently, as I became owner of an unexpected surprise, a 1982 Trans Am crossfire/Lu5. It was an Arizona car that found it's way to IL several years ago. It seems to be all but rust free, and quite low mileage. It shows 75,035 currently. Although the southwest sun was pretty hard on the paint and some interior panels, it is in pretty good shape considering. I'll post up a few pics, then return to lurking the forums looking for answers.

I should add it appears quite original. Like the bowling ball wheels, and what I believe is factory exhaust. I'll throw up some more pics if anyone is interested...

Car looks to be in pretty good shape. Did the AZ sun back all the trim panels under the hatch?
82-84 are my favorite Trans Ams.

The original owner kept just about everything, down to the original hang tag from the turn signal stalk. The only thing I cant find is the window sticker..

Re: 1982 Trans am. Central IL

Thanks. Personally, I'd prefer a little newer one. But sometimes you have to play with the cards your dealt. I couldn't pass up the deal. My wife though, is happy as a clam. I will say that this one seems a lot tighter than the later models that I had owned previously. And they weren't exactly beat high milers. The doors close with a solid THUNK, and squeaks/rattles are nearly not existent even on our gravel road.. Lots of things to sort out though. Fighting with no fluid to the right front break right now. Maybe a collapsed brake hose, not sure yet. The ac comp is junk, and the p/o says the heater core is bad. But nothing major. Runs/drives fine. Finding lots of hand written notes in the service manual. Looks like the trans (200c) was replaced a couple times on warranty, then replaced with a th350 by a dealer around 85. Also that the computer had been replaced by one from a 92 truck.... Strange, but that's what it says.

Great looking car! I have an 82 T/A myself, but needs a lot of work. I'm starting on the engine and working my way into the interior after. Welcome to the board!

Re: 1982 Trans am. Central IL

Welcome. Looks like a nice find. I'm from a Northwest Suburb of Chicago halfway between Chicago and Rockford. I have a compressor off of my 88 IROC that was working when it was parked 6 years ago. Still spins freely and should hold refrigerant. PM me if you want it. I was just going to take it to the scrap yard as it would have been just taking up space in my garage. I'm just waiting for the car to get back from the shop. You'll find a lot of very helpful people here!
