Re: My 1988 GTA project

Carpet is going in tomorrow. It’s crazy how back breaking interior work is on my old ***. Got the padding in and I’m exhausted. Beer o’clock.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Figured out why my steering wheel controls and horn do not work. Previous owner said he rebuilt the steering column and it looks like he broke the horn wire off and broke the yellow plastic off for the steering wheel control wiring on the cancel cam. Can’t seem to track one down in my short search yet. So if anyone happens to find one let me know. Looks like the picture below.

Also made some good progress today and got my carpet, center console, seats and most of the interior plastics installed. Only crappy pic I took of it today.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Didn’t have much time to work on her today. I did remove the trunk panel and got it aligned a bit better. I’m thinking I need to adjust at the hinges a bit. Drivers side is in a little to far and passenger is out a little to far. Also got my subs, amp and backup camera installed.

Before
After, passenger side
After, driver’s side

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Been awhile since i've posted but I've made quite a bit of progress. Everything is back together and only thing left is to make the mount for the amp that I've been too lazy to do. Still looking for the cancel cam also. Took her for a ride yesterday and today. Still have exhaust to do, plugs wire and all that business for a fresh tune up. Set my tps last night it was a bit off. I think one of the injectors might be stuck open because it smells like its running pretty rich, like all the time. Rear end makes noise and is more noticeable under throttle. Guy I bought it from claims its the rear wheel bearings but I'm doubting that. Got some stuff I'll be posting for sale pretty soon I'm sure, factory 6x9's and 4x6's dash speaker covers and vents, factory radio and bezel and 9 Rolls of gray headliner materials and I'm sure a few other things I can't think of right no. Anyways, here are some updated pictures.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

I'm waiting until after I get it wet sanded and buffed to put the badges back on. I'm pretty sold on going without the door moldings I think it looks "cleaner" without.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

The car really looks great all back together. Mine had similar symptoms and hard starting when warm(smoke and rich smell) before I replaced FPR diaphragm and all 8 injectors, I went with Bosch III’s from Southbay and that took care of that problem. Was not a fun job and took awhile but was worth it in the end, my buddy and I followed the tech article from here and the Haynes manual which helped a lot.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Been a while I know but I've been busy wet sanding the car while its still relatively nice out. Took it to get the windows tinted, buffed and polished at the beginning of the week. Looks like another trip to the paint shop will be in order on Ziebart's dime. They must have let the polisher get out of control and it messed up the passenger mirror a bit. Other than that I think its looking pretty good.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Thanks guys I'm more than in love at this point. I've been pretty down about ziebart messing it up while buffing. Manager from ziebart went with me to the paint shop today and he told them to make it right and he would take care of it. This Ziebart has given me a new found faith in people. Not only is he fixing his mess up, He cut all the other services I got done in half and that was after me telling him not to. So windows tinted and a full buff and polish ( I wetsanded it with 1500, 3000 and 5000 first) I was out the door at $246 which was less than the cost estimate I was given to tint both fronts and the back window. He is going to wetsand, buff and polish the areas that had to be fixed at not cost of course. Things got a bit weird, for me, when he was talking about him and two other guys basically making love to the car while they were buffing it. He has fallen for it badly and keeps asking me for my not for sale price and i keep telling him he can't afford it so i'm not even going to tell him LOL.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Went for a ride today and took some pics. Paint has been fixed from the Ziebart screw up. They plan on wetsanding and buffing the repaired areas at no cost but I'm tenative to let them touch it again due to the fact its been someone else has had it longer than I have since I've owned it and I'm afraid they well screw it up again lol.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Deleting this. Not sure what the deal was. i removed the steering wheel control pad and tested it on my bench with a battery charger. Voltage was showing .8 at the orange wire and would increase after pushing a button. Put it back in the car and everything is working now... I'm at a loss on why it started working but as long as it continues to work i'm happy lol.

Re: My 1988 GTA project

Been putting some work in over the last few weeks. Salt has hit the roads in central Indiana so I'm installing my headers, plugs and wires, new fuel injectors from southbay. I also decided to polish my intake, not quite finished yet but its coming out pretty good thus far. Pretty sure the plugs an wires were factory originals and the plugs were shot. Also going to rebuild the fpr.
