Wow, that really sucks. I thought he was just being quiet, or found another, much more interesting board.
Farewell Grumpy... Hope you enjoyed your ride while it lasted! It's never long enough, though.

I think we all have lost a major source of knowledge, but more importantly a comrade. All ThirdGenners must pay the appropriate respects. I will take this opportunity to send our collective condolences to his loved ones.

The DIY PROM community has lost an Icon. I still to this day look at his posts on the diy-efi archives and am amazed at how much his kowledge helped us all advance. I'm sure that his chariot to heaven had the best tune the angels ever ran. God bless you Bruce!

Very bad news indeed, but thanks for letting folks know.

Bruce was more than a mentor to so many folks, both technically and morally.

I have a very heavy feeling in my heart knowing that he is gone.

Re: Grumpy has passed on

The GM DIY tuning community is where it is today due in large part to Bruce's contributions. I appreciate and respect the hard work he's put in, and will miss his presence on these boards.

My prayers and positive thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.

Thanks for everything, Grumpy...

Re: Grumpy has passed on

I have this liquid welling up in my eyes as I read this thread, and I've never even met the man. He answered my questions without hesitation, kind of like a favorite uncle on the front porch.

So now who do we talk to when we've had a bad day?

(I never thought he was that grumpy)

Re: Grumpy has passed on

I read the thread title as : Grumpy has passed on . . .

Passed on what, I thought to myself ? Sifting through binary code to find some unknown flag, testing a new tuning product perhaps ? . . .

Not until I arrived did I understand . . .

I only knew Grumpy through his posts here and on the diy-efi site. His posts and responses helped to illuminate a thousand lightbulbs (the A-HA! sort) in the community. His input will be greatly missed, his teachings will never be forgotten.

I am just shocked! I had the opportunity to visit with Bruce several times and speak to him on the phone. What a brilliant guy he was. He was the inspiration for what I did with my Xfire. He showed it could be done. And the
DIY ECM community has lost one of the fathers of amateur tuning.
I am just so sad. Godspeed, Bruce.

Re: Grumpy has passed on

We have all lost a great friend in the DIY community. I can't believe this has happened, I didn't even know he was ill. So sudden, but then again, it always is.

My condolences to his family et al. Having lost 2 younger brothers in their 30's, I know all too well the sorrow and feelings and emotions.

Rest in Peace, My Friend. You will be gone, but never forgotten. You legacy lives on!

I totally agree.

I meet Bruce and the ECM gang a couple of yr ago when me and Mark R from nc came up there for one of his tech session.

He was a great man and even though his health was fading he still was bright eyed and cheerful and didn't let one how bad he felt.

RIP Bruce

We had our moments of severe disagreement, but we could agree on one thing. Cars.

Re: Grumpy has passed on

He was a good guy, even if he was a little on the rough side :-)

He meant a lot to me and even made it out to the house a few times for some tuning on the TTA.

I was out there basically every spring and fall and the TA Nats for the last 4 yrs or so.(now im really glad i pulled strings to get out of work and go that way last summer)

I could always count on him to lend a hand or point me in the right direction.

Hell, we talked on the phone for 4 hrs on one christmas eve day so I could learn how to follow the code in the hac.

He will be missed.

I just hope at the end he didnt suffer.

Goodbye Bruce

Jeremy

Very sad indeed. Even though 80% of the prom burning stuff was way over my head at least he was someone that could translate it to plain English for somebody like me to understand.

He helped so many people both in the 3rd gen and Turbo Buick world, truly a real "car guy"!! RIP Bruce.

This is very upsetting to hear. Like a countless number of people learning to tune, I got started reading all of Bruce's writings and "final words" and his posts helped the stuff finally click in my head.

I met him once, briefly, at a track day where Jeremy introduced us. He was a great asset to this community and helped people learn for themselves with guidance rather than just giving them answers. He'll for sure be missed. RIP Grumpy

Wow, this is completely unreal, it literally seems like yesterday I was sorting through all of his "Final Answer" posts trying to absorb as much as possible. It's no understatement saying that the DIY tuning community has lost an icon and immense resource. RIP Grumpy, I can't thank you for all the help you've provided without ever directly speaking to me.

I read some of his stuff from the EFI tuning guides, and I'm sure that many many thousands of people had an interest nurtured by these very guides. He was a smart fellow and will be missed by this community among many others.

Grumpy/Bruce will certainly be missed. Learned more from him than I could ever hope to contribute back to the community he helped start.

Are there any collections/funds being taken to help his next of kin/family out in these times?

Bruce was one of the original contributors of DIY Prom when it first started. Bruce was one of DIY Prom's most knowledgeable members and many of his posts are enshrined in the Eprom Tuning Guide sticky. DIY Prom and the entire EFI Tuning Community lost a good one.

I will miss him greatly.

Re: Grumpy has passed on

wow . This guy they call grumpy seemed like a GREAT man on these fourms . I read so much about him from what you all have posted and i never got the chance to talkto this man . And my eyes are starting to water and getting goosebumps. Actually just yesterday someone reffered me to him on helping with my tuning . Well good speed to him and his family . my prayers go out to his family . I just recently lost some good people by me . Since I am in the military and deployed I deal with this alot harder then you think

Oh My God

I cannot put into words how much this man brought to this entire community.

Never did anyone that got on my nerves as much as he did end up teaching me so much.

I first dealt with him in late 98 on the DIY efi mailing list. He frustrated me with his responses that lacked a quick and easy answer to my questions about my TBI firebird. He was the only person on earth it seemed that had modded one and was doing his own chips.

There were several times where I got downright heated with him on these forums or the mailing list.

I soon learned some valuable lessons from this man that have carried on through many of my lifes endeavors.

I can never again just accept a conclusion without supporting data and that goes for everything. It's almost as much of a curse as it is a blessing as one can never be happy accepting things because thats just the way it "is".

I'm glad that when I got a turbo buick I was able to talk to him about subjects outside of the hobby in the political forum at turbobuick.com, it's there where we found that we shared similar beliefs. When I discovered his past military service, and he of my current (at the time) military service, we made our peace.

I still search for his posts regularly. Today I was searching for some of his posts even, before I heard this news and thought to myself "I haven't seen him post for awhile, I hope he is ok"

Rest in Peace Bruce, you won't be forgotten.

Wow, I am just shocked. I've read tons of his posts and learned a lot from just reading...

He will deffinately be missed by the Thirdgen community, but it is a loss to the entire DIY EFI community.

I remember some of those exchanges, Pablo! He was like a bulldog in debates on this forum - it was sometimes like watching a train smash happening in slow motion. I remember the feeling of loss when he was banned for a while, and the relief when he was back contributing again. I hope we'll see him in the great tuning meet in the hereafter .

I know what you mean about support data being drummed into us, and I keep hearing him nagging to "always take notes".

Those of us Down Under owe him a debt of gratitude in the original "Programming '808" series on GMECM that revealed how to tune these ECMs starting in 1998.

What a loss to the community, but what an ornament to the community and a blessing to us all.

Vale Bruce Plecan.
