Virginia residents. Question about law and modifying car headlights
So I wanted to do the headlight conversion like some others have done with silverado or BMW headlights. The lights I want to use are a little over 6 inches tall at one point so I planned on trying to cut it down. Would this be legal? The light would still have a D.O.T number. Anyone here know anything about this? I would hate to do all the work and then the state inspectors want it off.

the lens has to be completely sealed. You cannot have cracks or damages to the lens portion, as well as it needs to be DOT, aimed correctly, high beams function, and be secured in place. I was a certified VA safety inspector about 5 years ago and that's how I remember it. It depends on what you are cutting down, if you left the lens portion alone, i think you'd be ok. Other than that, it depends how tough the inspector is. It's really a judgment call on something like that. If they were secured, aimed, functioned properly and it was and lens wasn't hacked up, I would have passed it.

This is what I thought of using.
I would possibly have to cut the top section of the lens because it is 6 inches tall on one side. Other than that they look like they would fit just fine as far as the other measurements go and they look a lot better than BMW or older silverado headlights (in my opinion) So I guess if I can seal up whatever I cut off it would work. Guess I'll head to the junkyard next weekend see what I can find.
