I know for sure that they check to see if your service engine light is operational. You will fail on that alone, even if that 383 burns clean enough to pass. Good luck.

would be in the northern illinois/chicago suburbs.. around the glendale heights, lombard area if anyone is familiar with those...

the above is one thing i was considering since for an extra $300 they have a kit to hook up all the original emission parts that i still have. would like to stay with carb(was originally a 305 with comp controlled carb and dist) but havent had much luck finding anyone who sells computers for anything other than 305 and 350 w/carb

When I had my 87 Firebird (2.8L MPFI, Auto) the emissions people in Elk Grove (30 minutes or so) only did the exhaust sniffer I think. I don't remember them hooking up to OBD or gas cap. My new car tho (2000 Cavalier) they hooked up to the OBD2 and did the gas cap, but no sniffer (since OBD2 has built-in "sniffers"). You may have to call Sec. Of State to find out what tests would be done to your particular car in that area.
You will have to pass the IM-240 test. That entails putting you vehicle on a dyno to do a simulated driving test while monitoring your tailpipe emissions. They do not check to see if the SES light is functional on 1995-older cars. If the light is on, pull the bulb. They will not check under the hood for emissions equipment unless you fail more than 3 times (i.e fail 4 times or more) They sometimes check with a mirror to look for cats on the exhaust, although 3 weeks ago, they did not.
Bottom line... if your engine is running OK and tuned properly, you should pass. I pass w/o emissions and hollowed out cats. So do not do anything to the car until you fail the test (if you even fail).

Come down south a little ways to bloomington,il its about an hour and a half 2 hours from joliet they should let you register here, and there is no emision testing what so ever.

I live in Charleston ,Illinois, about 3hrs. south of Chicago and until you get up around Kewanee there aren't any checks through this area either. I agree that you should try running your car ,if you have to test, before you go and spend money to fix something you might not need to.

Save your $20.00 even if you fail you have time to get it fixed. You can still drive it while you work on it. Just save your recepts so it looks like your not blowing them off. I have a 69 z28 that didn't pass to many florocarbons. I ended up just getting antique plates.

I'm pretty sure it was twenty years. I think they changed it a few years ago from 15 years. either way you are safe. Let me tell you the savings on licences are considerable. And I drive my camaro quite frequently around. And I never get hassled.

One more note. My car failed and I waited three years before I got different plates. All that happened were the old plates were allowed to expire. No threatening letters in the mail, no storm troopers at the door. Nothing

Car: Only a daily driver, but comin home
Engine: I have one that runs ;)
Transmission: Caged hamster that runs really fast
Axle/Gears: They are round, I know that much
you coudl always try to get race car/show car/custom insurance, which will give you an emissions waiver, but then some companies wont allow you to drive the car certain times of the year.....just a thought, or you can buy/sell the car to trusted family members until it is old enough for antique plates, cause it takes about 4-8 months for the state to catch up with the title change
