An IROC Beater, Get In Here(Advice).

I found an '87 IROC with the L98 350 and T-Tops. It has 161k on the body, but the engine was supposivly rebuilt 20k miles ago. The reason for the rebuild was because the owner before the guy who has it now, ran the motor low on oil and spun a bearing, then went through and put in new rod bearings and mains. The previous owner also ran the rearend low on oil and blew out the rear end, so he replaced the stock 3:23's with 2:73's. The current owner was intending to repaint the car so he put on a new front bumper and pulled out all the dents and dings and primered the car, so now it's primer black. The car smokes slightly at start, but goes away after a few seconds, the owner says all it needs is valve seals and it's good to go. Other than that, it doesn't leak any oils, starts right up, the body is straight, T-Tops don't leak, Transmission shifts fine. He's asking $900, here's pictures of the car. Anything else I should ask about? The guy is very confident that I could drive the car on a 3 hour trip home and have zero problems, he got the car to make it his little pride n joy, but he wants another LT1 like he use to have.

Well did you test it?

Take it for a drive, offer to pay for gas of course. Check for slips, hesitation, etc. I myself would think if its running good, and it doesnt look too bad. I bought mine for $350 with a blown motor, slipping trans and crappy interior.

900...I'd pay that for a good rolling chassis, let alone with a drivable 350 tpi setup. Unless the actual structure(i.e. non-replaceable parts) has been molested, I'd say that's a helluva deal.

I paid 3500 for an 84 Z28 H.O., it had good body, excellant interior and fair powertrain.

Maybe take a magnet around that body and make sure it's not 75% bondo or something absurd like that. If the whole car is primered, it might of had rust that is being cleverly disguised. Ask for a picture of it before he did his body work as well. It'll give you an idea of what's under that primer.

There's a guy with an '87 IROC around here. Just like that one. Except his has a white Maaco paint job (painted right over the turn signals); rusted out T-tops, quarter panels, doors, and hood; bondo cracking on the fenders; doesn't run at all; interior torn to hell and back; and two flat tires. He wants $950 for it . So I guess $900 for the one you're looking at isn't all that bad.

Check the floorboards!!! I wish I would have before I bought mine. But then again, these cars are old and I live where the snow comes with salted roads. That is one project you don't want to go through.

Nebraska. I'd primarily get it just to cruise around and keep miles off the blue car. Plus I'd love to be able to store the blue car over winter and not have to drive it through the winter conditions. Obviously the rear gears have been down-sized from 3:23 to 2:73's so that means a little better gas mileage. It's nothing fancy, but it's still a Camaro and it'll get me around. I just hate putting miles on the blue car for 'everyday driving', it's such a nice car and what not... but this IROC I can cruise it around with no real regrets, not a serious investment. Over winter I can do some internal work on the blue car and then fix up the IROC and sell it for a profit in the Spring.

Double check to make sure its a 350. When I bought my Iroc the guy said it was a 350 so i checked the vin number and it was a 305. He ended up selling it to me for $700 instead of a grand, but it would have been nice to have a 350
