Re: 17 yr old noob racer in appleton

You are so close to Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna that I am jealous. They start the highschool drags at age 14 (with a parents permission of course) and have bracket racing all summer. I drive all the way down from Ishpeming MI to go to WIR. It is a blast. You really don't have to be fast, just try a realistic dial-in and give it a whirl. Street class cost $20 and you are guarantee at least three runs. You get two qualifiers to just see what your car has got then take your best guess. If you win your first round you move on to round two and so on. It is a lot of fun and I must stress you don't have to be fast. Especially on highschool nights you should be able to mop up some neons and 2.8l S10s :-) Just look up the website for WIR, it should have the new schedule soon.

Re: 17 yr old noob racer in appleton

The schedule for 2008 wasn't published yet last I looked. I have not been to the high school nights myself (being that I'm an old guy at 28 now) but I have been bracket racing. My last time down there was august 2nd 2007. I am definately looking forward to bracket racing again next summer. I might make a real street drag one friday too. My brother has a chev powered fox mustang that should be running low 8's in the 1/4 mile and I'll want to hit an event or two with him.

if that track is IHRA the high school program is awesome. I was our track runner up and champion the 2 years i did it, and it's a great experience. usually people are extremely helpful, and you can learn a lot by just hanging out with people and listening to the guys with more experience.

Shoot, we still have snow on the roads up here in April. I remember my best snowmobile ride ever was in 3 ft of fresh snow on Aril 3rd. There is no chance my car will even be out of storage by then. It certainly will not be race ready.

May or June I'll be there!

I just might take you up on that. I'd like to watch my brother race his 8sec Mustang and that car takes to much prep time for bracket racing. I think RSD is going to be the way to go with his car.

Only problem is, My Bed Time is 10 pm. I'll only be able to stay for 2 runs.

Re: 17 yr old noob racer in appleton

so are you only eligible to race if you are a high school student? i'm a senior this year and will be graduating soon. anyways i would like to do this b/c i recently got a 89 IROC and i'm curious as to what it can do... it feels pretty powerful, but i have no idea because i've never been to an actual race before. what do you guys think by 1/4 time would be, just estimate. its a stock 350 TPI w/ a custom 3 inch exhaust and a powerstick. anyways... now you guys got me thinking, how far is that place from chicago??

You could go to Great Lakes Dragway, which is in Milwaukee. There is also Byron Dragway, in Byron, Illinois. WIR (Wisconsin International Raceway) is in Kaukauna, Wi. That's a pretty far drive for you.

You need to be 18, or have your parents register you. Or have a friend who is 18 register your car for you.

Your car must past tech inspection. Basically make sure your battery is secure (tie down or bolt).

Your car will most likely run low/mid 14s. Getting a set of slicks or drag radials will help you out in the traction department. Is that "fast"? Not at all. Good place to start though. You've already got the displacement taken care of with the 350.

I would recommend registering at
http://www.chitownracing.com/forums/
and
http://www.wisconsinstreetdominators.com/

The first is a Chicago racing site and the second is a Wisconsin racing site. You'll find a lot of good deals for parts and meet a lot of people who know a lot about going fast.

You bet. Shoot me a PM if you've got a question. I visit Dominators a lot, and once and awhile I'm on Chitown.

Re: 17 yr old noob racer in appleton

I'm in Milwaukee so I go to GLD once in a while even though my car will be set up to turn. I also autocross at Miller Park with the SCCA (I was 9th in points out of about 200 people for my class last season). I think I won a plaque or trophy or something but I'm not sure because I couldn't make it to the awards banquet... stupid job.

I'm only 16 and I'm loving my first car!
