Hey all
just curious if anyone has seen any poor thirdgens get traded in for the cash for clunkers thats goin on at the dealership? worst part about it is if there are, they are toast. i just went by my chevy dealership, i didnt see any thirdgens, but seen a couple (what appeared to be) nice cars that were traded in. i was told they are supposed to be crushed. i live here in the effingham IL. area.

I havn't seen any but I hate the tought of some camaro getting crushed so some one can drive a hybrid box.

Member
I was wondering the same thing also like older Camaros or something I dont see a point in crushing a car someone has value for and willing to buy just so we can drive new pieces of crap.
Supreme Member
I thought they weren't crushing the cars, just "disabling" them by replacing the oil with silicate something and basically frying the engines. I mean, at least interior and exterior parts would be available at the junkyard....
This program might be getting people to buy more fuel efficient cars, but it's killing the used car market at the same time - which hurts the overall economy.

well...according to some pictures i've seen online, they are sending them straight to the crusher after they blow them up. I dont think its right at all...i think they ought to at least part them out. I was browsing craigslist the other day, and see someone wanting to sell there 91-92 rs-z28 wheels for 200, but they wanted your old wheels to put on it, cause he was going today (monday) to trade it in for a Cash 4 Clunker...it was a 87 he said, but had the 91-92 wheels on it...he didnt show a pic of the whole car tho, so i dunno if it was a rough camaro or not..but still.

Well IMO it sucks, but I can see why people do it. It's free $$ from our government. If you have a thirdgen with well over 100K miles on it, and it's only worth say, 1500 bucks - then why not take 4500 for it as a down payment on a new car? But I agree - they should at least part them out...Originally Posted by teamstream

Trade your clunker in, the car gets melted down, the pacific automakers buy our melted cars. They then build crappy little eco boxes, send them over here and everyone buys them up, hows that helping the US automakers? There should be a American car company applied only for this.
The news showed a few "clinkers" this morning they all had clunker written on the windshield with shoe polish or something, but they showed mint appearing bubble body impala SS

Around here there parts are popping up all over CL.
I emailed one of the dealerships about all the front end parts to convert my truck to a NBS, the hood, bumper, lights, grill and core support and he would have sold it all but was ashing way to much.

They'd have to pry my cold dead hands from the steering wheel before I'd trade in my '87 IROC for a freakin' Kia.

looks like a couple nice thirdegens to me. nice interior to! did they leave the doors unlocked?

Well, i am in Ohio! I havent been threw any dealerships but there is a police officer and his wife who is a sheriff that live on a road that i use to come home from work who had a thirdgen that looked identicle to my 91 teal green camaro! Went by there about a week and half just notice they had a new camaro sitting there instead of the thirdgen! Im not sure if they did trade it in or if they sold it outright and then went and got the new camaro! I didnt even think to check out my chevy dealer to see, cause ill put up a fight to get that third gen i did it before with 2 of my camaros from a dodge dealership! My 89 (first car) i bought out from underneath someone cause i had the cash on hand when i went into the dealership, with my 92 they saw me comming and took me right back to show me it!
next day they had there money and i had me a car! But thats BS to crush them like everyone here is saying part them out! Get more money out of them if they sell the parts right and now for alot they will get buyers, if i was head of a dealership i would def keep them old cars cause who knows where america could be in 5 - 10 years, maybe out of this crisis and people will have the money to fix them up and make them look how they did when they rolled off the assem. line! My 2 cents

i try to keep my formula 350 stock. took the wife over to the local GM dealer car shopping and another customer saw us drive up in the firebird and start looking over new trucks he ran over and tried to buy my firebird off me he thought i was going to trade it in as a clunker.

the whole point of this program is to keep the poor folks down. the main way poor people climb out of the pit of goverment dependency is buy being able to purchase a real cheap used car that someone working like at walmart or mcdonalds can afford. mobility lets them have more freedom more freedom means you can look for better jobs a better job means you can improve your lot in life.Originally Posted by xx88camaro88xx

the whole point of this program by obama is to ENSURE the poor stay poor and stay on the government dole and this makes them keep voting liberal. if they REALLY cared about the poor they would make those "clunkers" available via 0 percent loans that had payback plans that a person would only have to make a payment to every 3 months or so. but the obama government is not interested in lifting people out of the hole they only care about how deep they can put people into distress.

I'm not in the mid-west region, but I did see a 3rd gen being traded in.
I was watching the news, and they did a segment on cash for clunkers, and they interviewed some young guy, maybe even a teenager, trading in his 88 Formula 350 to get a new Hyundai I think. It was sickening

even a 350 formula that just runs sells for more than the chump change from the government. that guy should be castrated so he cant pass his stupidity on to a new generation.Originally Posted by DanJz

If there is one (and only one) silver lining to this hideous cloud, it is that our cars are gaining value with every sweet innocent 3rd gen they ruthlessly destroy. Sorry, I'm a little emotional about it.

I saw a thread on here somewhere, where an 89 GTA got traded in, for a mini cooper. The GTA was easily worth 8-10k but the guy had wanted his new mini that day.
What I've heard for Cash for Clunkers is...
They installing an engine seizing compound, which makes the engine un useable, and the drivetrain must be intact with the body when it is put on the trailer. I haven't heard much about after that. Still no specifics on what condition the interior/body may or may not have been in before the sale was completed. So I think it'd be just fine to get your way with a fancy interior or parts, but you'd need the connections to do it.

I used to watch some of the Illinois craiglists for camaros and would see 2-3 accross the state for under $1000. I don't see any now.
i saw three go at work.
one was an 87 ta with a body cleaner than mine. tpi motor to boot.
wouldnt let me take any of it cause the junk yards get 6 months before they have to crush them.
and they did just wat they wanted to. it wasnt cash for clunkers it was get the hell out of 18 miles to the gallone and by an kia.
this program is gunna help the rich and hurt the poor. wat about the small shops that make their money on used cars with 100+ thousand miles. now im stuck doin oil changes on every 5peed 4 cylinder kia cause the guy that can hardly afford it cant pay to have any other maintnece done.
and all i have to say is im doin my part with my 03 silverado and my stroker motor in the bird. poor gas milage all the way around. thats how i roll.

This program had FAIL wrote all over it, (Atlest in the Council bluffs/Omaha area) They got the cars they didnt want, and the cars they did want are still out there, what a waste. There was some nice Tahoes and Blazers goin in there, and there leaving with a ****ing Hyundui
, but yet the ppl that really needed the new cars and they ones there were looking at getting off the street, or out of the driveways didnt meat standards, but whatever its the goverment so everything is ****ed up with them

Some junk yards here are advertizing that they are starting to get clunker cars and trucks in so, other than the engine, these cars (at least some of them) are being parted out. I didn't see any third-gens but did see cars that I didn't think qualified. I thought it was BS from the start . Unfortunately when the government sees that it was a failure they will think that it failed because not enough money was wasted and try again.

OMG those arnt even freakin "clunkers"!!!!!! those are still beautiful
personally id just steal them babys and save them. at least rip the VIN off and keep as race cars or sumthinJunior Member
I read the thread that the link was posted for in this thread and that program is absolutely rediculous and uneffective that it's not even funny, 1st I agree with a lot of people they should part out the cars because if u part out a whole car or about 3/4 of a car u can make a hell of a lot more then the car is actually worth in most cases depending on the car anyway. 2nd why doesn't the gov think about the charities like kars4kids. 3rd if not Kars4Kids why not send them to High Schools and let the Auto students work on the cars or I know a really good Charity it's called the Brandon wants a TPI Motor charity and would gladly take the motor for free
if they are goin to just kill it any....

reports coming out, that most people traded for same type of vehicle as they dumped, and a few other that made the trade in a negative aspect.

Up here I saw about a dozen f-bods go through the clunker program. Oldest being a 76 Trans Am and newest being a 98 Camaro. Mostly 3rd gens though. I found down in Texas that someone traded a 89 Turbo TA into the clunker program. I was speechless when I saw that.

That is horrible. The worst thing is, the body looked great... I mean, My posi doesn't even work that well... I wouldn't mind that nose either.
Just like to ole saying goes: one man's junk is another man's treasure. Very sad to think someone would trade in a good looking car such as the blue Z. Or any of them for that matter. Just sad. And the idiot that traded in the TTA.

We had a clapped-out 91 or 92 Firebird traded at the stealership I just quit. Red with a tan interior. Lets just say after a few weeks of sitting in the back 40, some third-gen lover pillaged some parts. Originally Posted by PATS88IROCZ

Seen a nice 84 berlinetta in the junk yard yesterday with yellow paint under the hood. Would have snatched up the gauges and other controls but looked like some jerk hit them with a BB gun. Had the cruse control on the steering wheel too. Nice set up. The car was for sure keep-able had it not been beat up recently.

my bud just stole a 96 camaro console from a dealership. the car was on a trailer, had the word clunker written on the front and rear window. said the hatch wasnt latched.
couldnt you take the interior out of these and just part them out to people who need them or do the dealerships need them so when the car is crushed theres some padding between the metal?

The cash for clunker cars went to junk yards b4 the crusher. Cant crush them for metal when they have everything else in them too. Originally Posted by 3rdGenIrocZ

here in KC, they had an '89 or '90 TA that the blew up and sent to some junk yard up north, and another dealership here on the south side they blew up a '97 (i think my friend said it was a formula too). I was sick when he told me, cuz he said they were both extremely nice and T-Top cars.
