Illinois Emmisions testing.

I'm in an area where emmisions testing is done.

I havent owned an older vehicle in many many years. As a matter of fact, I havent even had to bring a car in for an emmisions check in probably 15 years since I generally trade in my vehicles before they are 4 years old.

I've been looking at the website and checking other sites, but I'm still not positive whether or not my 1988 Iroc is subject to testing.

It seems like Illinois only tests vehicles that are 1996 or newer at this point, but I've seen references going back to 1981 model year.

I think some parts of the website simply were not updated, but just want to see if other folks here in Illinois have gotten a test letter for their third gens at all inthe last couple years.

Thanks

Check it there. I think your emission testing is linked to your VIN with the cyberdrive website.

I did that and it says nothing about whether or not the car needs testing... Seems pretty useless.

Re: Illinois Emmisions testing.

I would think you'd be okay then cause that's where the EPA website for IL directed me to check if a vehicle was suppose to get testing. I guess you could always call down to the DMV and ask them. Someone there might know too.

Re: Illinois Emmisions testing.

Had my third gen for 5 years and no test. They only test 1996 and newer vehicles.

Re: Illinois Emmisions testing.

Im in central IL and we hve no testing. MO got rid of testing because it cost more than it helped/fixed.
I had heard that 95% of the problems down there was gas caps not fully tightened..

Re: Illinois Emmisions testing.

I have a friend who lives in Naperville, and the last I knew, if the car is older than 10 years old the car will not be tested.

Re: Illinois Emmisions testing.

the law was changed in 2005. THe way it seems to work is this. If your 95 or older vehicle passed on its last test before the law went into effect, you were given a permanent exemption.

My car was in an area where emissions are not checked since 2004 and prior to that, was in Connecticut. so I'm in a little bt of a grey area here. Secratary of state cant tellme anything until they process the title transfer. the person I talked to said "You shoudnt need to get it checked" but was unsure what the computer would kick out once the title gets processed.

the other factor is when my plates come up for renewal next year, I'll be right at 25 years anyway.

Re: Illinois Emmisions testing.

Ahh, I see. Now I understand the concern. I live where there is no testing so when I owned my Firebird I didn't have to worry bout it.

Re: Illinois Emmisions testing.

All thirdgens are now exempt from testing. That doesn't mean someone can't demand a visual to check for emissions equipment, but the likely hood of that happening is slim.

They IL-240 test that uses the rollers is gone. I haven't seen a place with them installed in a long time. Its all OBD2 and readiness status.

So without a place to actually test your car, its not very likely that you will get asked to pass emissions.
