Snow is fun
Came home from the jersey shore last night around 11pm. The roads weren't too bad down 571 and then I-195. Back in PA they were just starting to get the snow. Was cruising around 50mph the whole way unless i got behind some guy who's first time driving in the snow decided to take the highway.
Going to work this morning was much more fun. My limited slip seemed limited to one wheel, guess the 9-bolt is getting tired....snow just seems to not provide enough friction for it to kick in. Anyway, 20 minutes later and the damn thing is out of the driveway. After that though, the roads were just slush pits. Things weren't too bad on durham rd and 413. Fishtailed a little bit but nothing serious. Last time it was really a problem driving around was probably around 4 years ago. I got snowed in up in newtown while at work. Then the next day i dug it out and drove home and was pretty much sideways the majority of the way down the newtown bypass and i got stuck at a light on 413 by business route 1 for a bit
Not very exciting but, i guess i missed the real fun by a couple hours...8am was probably about 2-3 hours after the roads were plowed last.
Anyone else having fun in the snow.

Yah, we had it up here all day today - another ten inches or so - we had sixteen inches last Sunday/Monday, as well. My Camaro is in the garage with about four feet of snow drifted up against the door. To get around up here in the dead of Winter, we have a Ford Escape, a Dodge Dakota 4x4, and a Subaru Legacy Wagon. I don't like getting stuck in the driveway, or anywhere else. I admire you for being able to drive your car during the Winter, I'd sure like to be driving mine . . .

Re: Snow is fun
Well, the one issue i had over this little snow storm is that my battery is acting up. Went to start it this morning and i had only 9 volts. No idea why as the voltage was charging when i was driving it yesterday (>12v), and my travel times were a bit longer than normal due to the driving conditions.
few things that come to mind is low electrolyte (gonna check in a minute).
Short caused by ice around the starter slowly draining the battery over night ... water + salt == easy shorts.
Or, the short trips over the course of time has not been enough to charge the battery to full and every successive trip brings it a little lower.
Anyways, that's the biggest problem i've had during the snow this year.

Maybe you could swap in a borrowed battery that is known to be a healthy one- that might shed some light on your charging problem, any chance that the belt is getting wet and slipping?

Re: Snow is fun
The problem seems to be some type of partial short either in the radio circuit or the accessory circuit. Considering the condition of my doors, and how they have power all the time and the radio doesn't, I'm going to go with the accessory circuit as the issue. And due to the condition of my doors, and the fact that i saw no lights constantly on, i'd say the short lies somewhere in the door lock solenoids.

keep your camaros off the roads while they are snow covered!! If you want to fish tail and snow drift the roads late at night, get a jeep or truck.

Dont be a wuss. The car is capable of driving in snow. it's the driver who may not be.
Most definitely, if you can't drive in bad weather, dont take the car out.

Re: Snow is fun
with that attitude you could take a motorcycle out on a snowy highway...lol Its still not a good idea.
Re: Snow is fun
it all depends on why your driving in the snow in the first place. about a month ago i was driving to work at 2 am because i have to be there at 3. it was snowing and of course the plows cant do anything until there is a few inches on he roads. needless to say there was a half inch and everything was goin along great at 25 mph and all of a sudden my back end kicks out and i do a full 360 on the highway and if i were a lesser driver i would have creamed a telephone pole. other times i have gone out to empty parking lots with some friends for some drifting and stuff which is a lot of fun. basically if you know how to handle your car when it fishtails you should be fine. and just because you have 4WD done mean you can drive like an a-hole in the snow like most suvs and trucks around where i live do. i do suggest testing yourself in an empty parking lot (i know it has helped me) whenever you can learning how your car responds in different conditions but be safe.

Yeah, safemode. It's not yourself you should be worried about. It's all the guys that DON"T know how to drive that could be out there with ya.

Safemode, did you manage to get your electrical problem puzzled out yet? Was it the solenoids, or something else in the accessory circuit?

Re: Snow is fun
I'm waiting for the weekend when i can have time to take the doors apart to test the door lock poppers. It is definitely something on the accessory fuse and it's obviously something that gets always on power. So windows are out, as they only get power when the key is on. Rear hatch is a thought, but i dont ever really use it and it hasn't been a problem before...but still a possibility. Most likely it's the poppers, since they've been "weak" lately, and a short makes sense.
So, with the acc fuse out, i've had 0 issues with the battery. I put the radio fuse back days ago. Hopefully i get time this weekend. Working two jobs sucks for any car time.
As for the snow driving. I didn't say you can drive anything in the snow if you're good enough, implying that i'm an awesome driver and better because i can drive in the snow. I said that the car is able to drive in the snow (and it is, nothing about it prohibits it from doing so), the limiting factor is the skill of the driver. A motorcycle (except specially built ones) can't drive in the snow. Hell, they're banned from the roads in many places when there is snow on the road. If i had a ferrari, i wouldn't say to drive it in the snow, not because of the damage that could occur, but because the car is simply too low and for the most part incapable of handling snowy roads.
My car isn't lowered, so i can handle a few inches of snow. As long as the roads aren't iced completely, the car is perfectly capable of driving in the snow. Regardless of other people who can't drive but still try, that doesn't change anything for me, since that would be true if i was driving the camaro, or a hummer H1. The car i drive doesn't dictate the chances of getting hit by someone else.
The only thing i worry about when driving in the snow is getting stuck when i stop. Fishtailing is easy to handle, and it never should get out of hand to the point where you are 90 degrees or more. If the unexpected somehow does happen, it happens. The same type of unexpected situations can happen on perfectly sunny days. Tire blowout at 75mph on a sunny day or 360 while doing 30. Hrm.. I love snowy days because most of the idiots who can barely drive in good weather just stay home. Unfortunately, you still get a bunch of people who think that because the roads are white, they have to keep under 20mph, less they rocket out of control into a tree. They're usually the same type of people who ride the brake whenever the road curves more than 10 degrees.
Basically, you shouldn't drive in conditions you're not comfortable in. I'm comfortable in most, and the fact that the car is rear driven, doesn't change that vs front. It just changes how it's driven. Now i've driven in downright dangerous conditions where you literally couldn't see out the windows... but snow isn't necessarily dangerous, it just requires you alter your driving to compensate for it. But not all cars are the same, so part of it is skill, and part of it is knowing your car's limitations, and part of it is knowing how to augment the car to do better, like temporarily weighing the rear down and such (though i haven't had to do that this year). So far, i've never had to call out of work due to road conditions, though, the last time a real winter storm hit was 1996.
