Doing a Few Upgrades
Doing a Few Upgrades
Whats up everyone I just thought I'd keep you up to date on the the ol' 85 in case anyone was wondering. Well so far my list of upgrades are:
- Traviz's edelbrock headers and y-pipe (200$)
- KYB GR-2 front struts (150$)
- Energy Suspension polyurathane bushing kit (160)
- misc. maintenance (30$)
I'm in the process of taking everything apart right now as I wait for the parts to ship. I ordered my struts and the bushing kit from Hawk's thirdgen so hopefully they will get a good review from me haha. I will post pics of the progress. I got the exhaust off and the manifolds off so far, interestingly enough my exhaust manifolds did not have gaskets on them (that may explain my frequent exhaust leaks!).
So i'll keep you guys updated on the progress, and Eric, I hope to make it to your b-day gtg!

Nice job Robbie. Sounds like the car is coming together. We still need to race, lol. Anyway, hope to see you out some time.

Ya I hope we can get one small gtg at the track if possible before season's end, I want to run my car once more with the mods. I am hoping to have the car back up and running by the end of the week if Traviz does what he's supposed to lol. But ya, I'm down for a challenge against the supra and the 83. I should have some pics for ya sometime mid-week on the progress. Right now the exhuast is off and I have the steering column in pieces trying to tighten the tilt bolts, it's a mess. I hope I can get it back together haha.
BTW Will, how do you like your new gear box thing? Better steering response? And how much HP and TQ do you think your putting out?
Del, on your nice web-page your Supra specs show you have 230 hp, that should be good for 14's shouldn't it?

they are mid-low 15's at best stock.
it's powerband is up top which makes it fun on the freeway, but slow from a dig due to the lag in the turbo spooling.
it also weighs as much as my GTA at about 3500lbs.
but for a bone stock '89 car, it's still a nice ride.

Got headers on. Will post pics when everything gets hooked up. Had to raise the engine to get the drivers side header on. The Passenger side slid right on without problems but that last bolt is a real pita.
Travis, thank you very much for the headers, you're a good friend.

Looks very nice Robby, makes me jealous, I want headers now. Also makes me want to switch to TPI, lol, maybe someday I will, anyway, nice job.
I am not Travis bish by the way, f*** Travis, I will body slam him to the ground next time, lol.

thnx for the nice words.
Will, I am failing to see you being able to take Travis by hand to hand combat. I think you would get owned lol. J/K. Weren't you going to switch to TPI? What happened with that? Did you find a newfound love for the subtle flow of a CFI design?
As for the car. Since the y-pipe has a gap between it and the cat, and they are at slight angles to eachother, what would be a good solution? Is there more to it than just a pipe to connect the two since they are at an angle?

The X-Ram idea is still in the mix, not really sure though, I have read some bad things about it on the CFI boards from some of the CFI Vette guys. I still need to do some more research. Plus, I would almost rather wait and save my money for the TPI swap, even though that would be a while from now. I am putting all of my money now into getting the looks of the car restored, redoing the suspension and a few other things.

Suspension, exhaust, and steering column are finished now. So my car was down for over a month on these relatively minor things, it took half that time for my parts just to get here. My guess is that my car may be as fast as Will's now, assuming my car doesn't have the fuel problem it does. From what I read, my car should have ran .4-.6 tenths and several mph faster in the 1/4 if my car wasn't losing fuel under load at high rpm. but I'll save that for a different day. So add these mods, and potentially I could have been in the 14's, what a dream come true, kinda.
Well I guess now I have about 2k into my thirdgen, I've learned alot in that time, so I guess it pays off.
Thanks for reading,

Way to go Robby, glad to hear it's all working out and the car is getting faster. I am sure it's faster than the CFI, trust me, lol. Hope to see your car and progress some time soon. Post some more pics when you get a chance.
Yes it's driving. I havn't really got on it too much but it sure feels noticeably faster. The sound has changed alot! It has a much deeper tone and is noticeably louder when cruising around. The suspension feels more responsive w/ the new struts and bushings, no more squeaks. I still need to get it aligned though. lol, my old struts that we took out wouldn't even push back out after you compressed them what a joke! As far as performance I had a chance to wot throttle through 1st and 2nd gear and it seems to pull harder through the 4-5k rpm range, which is good I think. Now, I would like to think my car can run low 15 or better with traction, but I guess I'll have to get out there to find out.
Will, wanna race??

Robby, I am down for a race. We need to take them to the track as well and see what the times and mph are. I still have things to do though before I will run mine at the track, gas tank, fuel pump, etc. Also have some stuff for the tranny to firm up the shifts, then I am down for the track.
