Need help locating the right part
3.42 rear end.
How much will it cost and how hard will it be to find one?

I by luck found one at the junkyard, it was half off day too haha.
3.42 posi disc rear end, 60 bucks!
bout the only time ive ever gotten a good deal.
if u have a 10 bolt now, check into just upgrading to a posi and gears, pick those up new about 200 bucks, and have a shop install it.

My questions:
1.) How do I know if I have a 10 bolt? Count the bolts on the rear of the differential? I know these questions are silly so no "noob" comments Jesse.

2.) Once I know if I have a 10 bolt or not, is there a kit I can buy that will upgrade to to a posi and change the gears? I know there are shims and stuff involved in the installation.
3.) If any of you happen to be at a PNP and see a differential like Travis found, will you accept a 10% finder's fee?
Thanks for the advice...

1.) yes just count the bolts
2.) you can buy a posi and gears and a diff install kit. but its not easy to install yourself send kyle(r1maniac) a PM he does that kind of stuff for a living

What do you have in that Mike, 2.73's?
Summit sells the 3.42 carrier set I think.
I'm sure you have a 10 bolt in that TBI.
The RPO code for a Borg Warner 9 bolt is M78 I believe, dunno about 10's.

Mike definetly has a 10 bolt. probably a non posi 2.73 car though. A 3.42 posi would be a very worthwhile upgrade, it will bolt right in. No more than 45 minutes to an hour on jackstands in your garage. The big thing to remember is that your speedo is going to be off afterward!
And the only stupid question is "Why ask questions?"

If I went that route in a month and a half, that would give me time to research buying the kit and talking to Kyle though. I'm guessing this route might cost more. Should I contact him directly? Will he know where to get the right parts?
Veirifed: 10 bolt, non-posi, 2.73

i would go with terrells axle for now, i dont think changing to discs is too bad. just have the brake lines feed into the caliper instead of the wheel cylinders, hopefully they are the same fitting size.
once that is taken care of then later on you can worry if you want to upgrade to 3.42 from the 3.27 . at least they are the same carrier.

Kyle can probably get these items alot cheaper, but you would need:
Ring and Pinion set: $100-$150 on ebay. Significantly more on summitracing.
Install kit: $75 for me at wholesale.
New posi carrier: How much money do you want to spend LOL $300 and up.
Then at most shops the install price is about $600 dollars. Most shops will bill this at 6 hours time. If you know what you're doing it's SIGNIFICANTLY faster however, but shops don't tell you that.
Swapping for a used unit is much more cost effective if you aren't worried about it being used.

Thanks all!
I appreciate the feedback. Now I know how much money to queue up. I'm going to go search the brake board to see what the drum-to-disk swap would be like.

On my old 87 I had 2.77 /drum rear.I swapped in a 9 bolt 3.23/disc rear.It was easy, couple hours in the garage by myself. You'll need to chang the proportioning valve(5 minute job)Get the brake lines with the axle and just connect those to the junction above the pumpkin and you'll be good to go.It will brake a lot better with the disc and replacement parts aren't much more $$$.

And you meant to say it will brake a lot better with the disks not drums, right?

Yeah sorry,I meant to say disc.I noticed a pretty big difference, especially on take off.Accelleration while driving was improved too.I would do it again, actually I'll be doing it in a couple of months.

powermite's mods
This dude in the UK went off on his bird. in a GOOD way. Anyway, he fabbed up these bezels and someone on this forum (TGO Member "bnoon") copied the idea and did a run in billet aluminum. He had satin, polished, and raw. The polished ones were $120 bucks for 4 rings. Both Alex and I scored a set before he decided it wasn't making him money. I've had at least a dozen people PM me about them. Brad Noon ("bnoon") should do another run.
I really like what they do for the interior.
Thanks for noticing.
