GTA - '07 Update

Well I guess it’s about time I posted an update on the GTA.
I’m sure some of you had an idea what’s been up my sleeve, so here’s the deal. ..

I bought a new ATI ProCharger last summer from a local private party, for a steal.
After quite a bit of work by Bennie this spring, it’s pretty much done.
Still have some details to finish, but it has been drivable the past couple months.

I’ll give some details to reduce the Q’s and for those who don’t know much about this stuff.

It’s the P1SC kit (self-contained) with the big 3-core intercooler and smog legal, of course.
In addition to the new 24lb SVO injectors last fall, it has a new fuel pump (high pressure Walbro Racetronix kit).
I’m also utilizing the booster pump and FMU the ProCharger kit comes with.
Boost is about 7-8psi, but creeps past that it seems when air is more dense or forced into the intercooler (freeway).

So, as far as initial track times, I took it for 3 quick runs today (7/18).
Not very impressive E.T. wise thus far, but the MPH’s did reach about what I was hoping for.

13.3@107.8 – 2.0 60’s. Picked up ~7mph from last season, so mid-12’s should be possible I suppose.
I’m just not sure where to get those 7-8 tenths yet, but I’ll definitely be back there to practice when the weather chills more.

I didn’t launch at very high rpm’s and shifted at only 5K, so that’s a place to start.
Any suggestions are always welcome. It’s pretty dialed in tuning wise and feels very strong.
My car has never been a super freak though, so we’ll see where it goes from here.

Many thanks to Bennie for his time and ingenuity on this project!

. ..and here’s a few quick teaser pics for your viewing pleasure.

I wouldn't go that far, but thanks.
Many are going much faster with a lot less.
I'll be satisfied if I can pull some mid-12s eventually.

Now you need to really that thing
Yeah, I was a bit timid first time out with the setup.
I'll go all out next time.

My AS&M runners are still not here, but should be shortly.
Haven't installed the new Powermaster high-amp alternator yet.
A better cam than the mild ZZ4 probably wouldn't hurt in the future either.

Once again Del, YOU SUCK! I've been toying around with buying a bigger cc head and getting an sc too. I don't know yet, I still want my T56 so I may stay n/a with the 10.1 for now. We should have some good races this time next year. Bastard!

Haha, thanks guys.
I'm sure I'll see you folks shortly.

I've been eyeing that Comp 268XFI cam that you have in your sig for a long time Steve.
It'd be a nice improvement over my current and streetable with some tuning from what I've read on here.
Maybe next year.

I sold a different unit a long time ago.

I don't think a clip would do it much justice.
If you didn't know what it was, you'd think it was a really bad belt slipping whistle, haha.

Yeah, just for fun sometime I should borrow a set just to "see" that nice E.T.
I need to figure out how to get 1.8 60's on what I have first though.

275/40/17 - I'm going to need a new set soon.

How much was the seat of the pants difference?
I wasn't wetting myself with the increase, but I haven't been too heavy with the gas either yet.
I would say it definitely pulls throughout the entire powerband more noticeably now.

If you bolt one of these onto a practically stock car, you'd probably be wow'd more.
Since I had heads/cam and lots of bolt ons, early calcs are showing probably a 30%+ increase in power, as opposed to a stock application that might see closer to 50%+ depending on boost amounts.

Re: GTA - '07 Update

what are the specs on that cam Del? I heard cams with + overlap are more prone to bleed off boost than a negative overlap cam so just curious the specs. I forget the specs on the ZZ4 cam you have. Anyways, turn up that boost man haha.

Re: GTA - '07 Update

Yeah, Jesse has the specs right for the ZZ4, except I have 1.6 rockers. So the lift is like, .506/.544.

I think there isn't just one XFI, but I recall looking at specs of 218/224, .570/.565 113 LSA.

Once I get used to and do what I can with this amount of boost, I will get a smaller pulley and go for 10psi, but not anytime soon.

if its negative number it will have less lope and is generally better for boosted apps, and the the pos. overlap cam will be better in general for n/a combos. the s/c cars and turbo cars are usually matched with higher lsa cams. anyways, that looks like a good upgrade either way from the zz4.

well when i was reading about that stuff they called it that not wider or tighter lsa which seems like its just referring to the lsa not the overlap. i don't know. no need to be ****.

What've you been up to Vin? You disappeared from the MS.

I've never heard of positive/negative, wide/tight, or short/fat if it makes y'all feel better.

I know it's not the same thing , for the most part, the tighter the LSA the more overlap...for the most part, obviously we're talking about cams with the same amount of duration. However there are still things to consider. Ramp rates, ...duration (cuz chances are they won't be the same). with your equation you can have a cam with a 106 lsa angle and still get that "Negative" number...point me to a cam manufacturer that'll grind you a cam on a 106lsa for a boosted app.

So like i was saying, just say n/a motors in general like tigher lsa, (have you looked at grinds for fuel injected motors?) And wider for forced induction. Keeps it simple

Re: GTA - '07 Update

Well my engine compartment was pretty full before since all the accessories including smog & A/C are still there.

The washer fluid container is gone and replaced by a smaller one they provide.

Here's a few more pics.
I threw in one of the Supra since I had it painted recently, added a front lip, some clear front lights.

You called it. I been shopping for a set of MKIV or 90-92 (same 5 spoke style) for the past 6 mos.
I don't want to invest too much into it.

I didn't bother calling anyone because I knew it wouldn't be a wow-o performance.
It was more of a feel out trip. I'll get some 12's out of her.
You think the shortblock is just a dud? A shame with such low miles.

Yeah it was probably me, I was in a training class all week off Truxel.
Didn't see ya bud, but I'm sure I'll see most of you folks soon 'nuf if we ever get a gtg going.

not to be an insult or nothin but ya i think its a dud for some reason even you said it your self your car has never been a freak kind of a dud its always disapointing your car should have so much more horsepower than it does with that combintion on there as it sits should be 12's.

Re: GTA - '07 Update

I think it's like 9.7:?

I'm just curious if there is something specific in the shortblock you think should be refreshed that would help.

Really not sure how fast it "should be" in comparison to other GTAs.
I read a lot of stats and have seen many a user's ride on here with varying outputs.

I've seen tons of just head/cam/bolt-on combos running mid-low 13's, and then some well into the 12's and better with a lot more extreme, non-smog legal parts.

I had a bit over 250 at the wheels before the blower, which is about right with the TPI on top still.
That should've been good for about a 13.2-13.5, which I was close to.

With the blower I'm only estimating a 30% increase to give ~325 at the wheels.
This is close to the ~108mph I trapped in the initial runs.
That should be good for a 12.5.-12.7.

From what I've read on the Power Adder board over the past year or so, there are quite a few mid-high 12's with similar setups, so I don't think I'm far off.
Don't get me wrong though, I have been a bit disappointed over the years at the track, but I don't know if it's the weight, the driver, or just how it is for the GTA.

Any suggestions are always welcome, but I think I'll have a better idea next time I visit the track to see if I can still pull another half second out of it.

I'll pretend my alternator is about to go out next time I'm at the tree.

We'll see how it goes next time out.
I think the +7mph was a good sign and about what I expected.
Just need to translate it to a better E.T.

Re: GTA - '07 Update

Funny thing happened to me on the way home with the Supra today.

An older guy in a C5 Corvette pulls up and asks "how much?"
I kinda laugh and ask, "what're you offering?"

We pull into a parking lot and he says 4K cash, right now.
His passenger is checking it out meanwhile commenting to the guy how clean it is inside, the low miles, etc.

I tell him I'm not ready to part with it just yet and not for 4K, but for 5K I'd think about it.

He knows guys that would want it for drifting apparently down at Irwindale in SoCal.
I tell him about the few mods, minor oil leak, etc.
He doesn't give a shiet and tells me that they're just going to rip that all out and drop another drivetrain with 600hp+ anyways and that I can see it drifting in D1.
He insisted I take his # and think about it then call him even if I decide nah.

I call him back later and tell him I just can't sell for 4, but will keep the #.
He said no problem, didn't appear to want to go higher as he's owned tons of cars, including these when new and knows a fair price, so he said keep his # and if I'm tired of it within the next couple months to call him.

High blue (excellent cond.) is just under 4K, "Suggested retail" is like 5K.
4K woulda been OK, but I'm in no hurry to sell just yet.
Good to know there's still demand though!

Re: GTA - '07 Update

thats odd because Supras aren't really the prefered car for drifting due to price and weight

Re: GTA - '07 Update

Well not the new ones obviously for price reasons.
Many an MKIII can be found for under 5K.

As far as weight, it's heavy now, 3500lbs, but I assume they get stripped down pretty good.
I imagine the car has good weight distribution, just not as great as a 240 per say.
He just mentioned the drive train would be pulled and putting in a roll cage.

Re: GTA - '07 Update

Don't worry, I'm not switching teams.
It was just too nice a deal to pass up and I needed a newer daily driver.
2001, 79K miles, 100% stock.

Supra is for sale if anybody knows anyone looking for one!
The guy who wanted to buy it started talking me down from his original offer of 4K, so I said nah.
