WTB: 2.77 axle. disc brakes

Anyone have a lead on a 2.77 with disc brakes? I need to make a long road trip to L.A. for the next run to the coast event sponsored by pro-touring.com and my poor th400 won't be kind to my gas mileage with the 3.42's.
I have a 3.42 ten bolt to trade or cash of coarse..

Re: WTB: 2.77 axle. disc brakes

eh throw in the ten bolt 2.73's as well. probably a bit more common to find, as long as it has discs

I can check my 86 Roc and get back to you. It's got the stock rear in it. Is your rear a 4th gen or no?

no cuz i dont want to pull axles to put on backing plates just for a weekend getaway. When I get back into town I want to swap my 3.42 axle back in. I just want the 2.xx for out of town cruises, so I want an easily swapable rear end.

the axle in my thirdgen is a thirdgen axle, the wheels on it are correct offset. The 3.42 axle I have not in my car is a fourth gen rear end.

Oh okay Traviz. I'll keep an eye out for what you want. You want a known good rear end or you okay with a junkyard rearend? can pull the cover off and make sure all is good?

I'll check my rear on my 86 tomorrow and I'll let you know. Does anyone know which RPO code is for the 2.77 gears?

This ^ seems more logical.

Is the gas savings that much better from a 3.42 to a 2.77 or equivalent for this to even be worthwhile? I can see maybe if you had 3.73s or worse.

big difference. I went from 2.73 to 3.42's and that was with overdrive. w/o overdrive a lot of rpms for his engine and supercharger

it will be like a 700rpm difference yes its a big deal especially on a 400mile road trip.
Anyone else here in an L.A. Cruise for a weekend? its a really big deal.

Could be 3.08, 3.27 or a rare 3.45.

Well, the G92 option on the 305/manual if you consider that rare.
'87 GTA 305's were the standard 3.08, autos the 3.27.
Pretty sure Travis wants 2.77/2.73 for it to be worthwhile.

Re: WTB: 2.77 axle. disc brakes

I've got a 3.23 large disc rear out of a 90 Firebird Formula that we ran in the 24hrs of LeMons. I know its not exactly what your looking for, but I live in Grizzly Flats, only about 55 minutes from you. Another option might be to just change gears & probably the carrier, keep all the shims with each unit & you could swap them out in an afternoon, not as easy as a 9" but no big deal. I don't get on the computer on a regular basis so if your interested just call Gregg at 642-9563.

I've got one. My iroc came with 2.77's and I swapped in a 3.27 rearend years back, still have the 2.77 rearend minus brakes though. Not sure if it's of any use to you. It's in good shape.

It's a 9 bolt, out of an 89 so it would accept the PBR backing plates or any others I would think

100 bucks? It's got about 90k miles on it, solid rearend. Axles are in very nice shape, had everything apart to inspect it. 2 covers, rear springs if you want them.

Re: WTB: 2.77 axle. disc brakes

Do the 9 bolt and the 8.5 have the same length pinion snout?
I would think swapping an entirely different housing would mess with the driveshaft length.
Hopefully I learn something today.

well the easiest way for me to answer is. all third gen's use the same length driveline, manual, automatic etc. so the differentials are fine to use with whatever drive line you have.

Wow, that's wild. Gm should have done that from the get-go. When I swapped my 7.5" for an 8.5, I had to use a 1" shorter driveshaft approximately.

well the 8.5 is the 9 bolt? everything ive read or seen says you can use the same driveline in any auto/standard thirdgen. if I am wrong i would like someone to correct me so I do not give out misinformation.

As far as I know it should work. Hell people put 4th gen driveshafts and rearends in with no issue.
