Re: *IROC / THIRD-GEN RIDEOUT* 8/26/12

I was glad that someone from the central valley won and award.

Ha ha that 16,000 mile Z28 should have gotten some kind of award. That was a low mile original car. I would be kind of afraid to drive that car. I'm glad cars like that are around to so that everyone can see what these cars were like when they were new.

Re: *IROC / THIRD-GEN RIDEOUT* 8/26/12

I just hit 196,000 miles during the rideout on the body and original rear end of my car. I hit 30,000 miles on the new motor and 3,000 miles with the new transmission and coverter over the rideout aswell.

My car is in decent shape for a daily driver but ha ha I would have to do a complete ground up restoration to have my car in the same shape as those low 20,000 mile and 16,000 mile cars.

Re: *IROC / THIRD-GEN RIDEOUT* 8/26/12

It won't stay at 16,000 miles for long... I don't believe in garage queens. I love driving my cars. I'm glad you guys liked it though. Examples like this are tough to find but they are out there.

It may be low miles, but it's not free of imperfections. The prior owner let water spots stain the paint and although it was dent free there are plenty of scratches. It's not a show car by a long shot.

I've got a few things planned for it in the short term. I'm currently tearing the speakers and the amp out of the vette I have for sale, and I ordered a speakerbox for the two tens I have. The stereo just isn't enough for the car the way it is. I want to do a suspension job, maybe lower it an inch or two, convert the drums in the back to disk brakes, and put a wider set of rims on in the back so the wheels are flush with the body. (No 22's though...lol) Other than the clear headlight covers I made for it, I'm not going to do anything to the body besides paint it with the original color and maybe shave off the side door bumpers. I liked these cars looking the way they were. I'll get all that done in the next year or two.

I'm not planning on keeping the engine bay original either. It needs a bigger intake and better flowing exhaust sytem like the one I have in the vette, but I'm not going to go crazy and drop in a roll cage and LS1 built 427 motor for it til I get it up over 100/150,000 miles. I may also eventually convert it to 6-speed after the 700R4 goes poof (And they always do)

To me this car is about reliving some of the fun I had with my first 91 Z28 that I had in my early 20's back in the 90's, and doing everything I wanted to do to that car with this one now that I can afford it. I have a tendancy to keep muscle cars and drive them until they fall apart rather than sell or trade them, and I'll definantly keep this one for the foreseeable future.

I just wish it had T-Tops like my last one did. I have been eye-balling the roof swap idea I have seen in various places on the internet, but I wouldn't dare do that until I have enough miles on it and devalued it enough to the point where it is justified to chop it up and turn it into a track car when nobody cares about how original it is anymore...

I've never understood why people keep cars in a garage instead of driving them and having fun with them, it just makes no sense to me. It would be one thing if it were a $300,000 pasta rocket status symbol, but it's not. It's an American muscle car and it was meant to be out on the road or at the track shredding tires.

But that's just me...

Re: *IROC / THIRD-GEN RIDEOUT* 8/26/12

Ha ha yeah I understand. But your car is still the top of the line in terms of factory performance for the late thirdgen cars though. I don't know what the market will be like in the future for these cars but the value will go up.
For us that are 3rdgen fanatics that car is very valuable!

T-Tops are one of the main reasons that I got an IROC instead of a '91-'92 Z28. You couldn't get T-Tops with an L98 Camaro after 1989. When I was looking at getting into thirdgens I test drove around a few L03 RS's cars. It was nice but I didn't like the lack of power that they had stock. The next car that I drove was a white 1991 Z28 with the L98. Ha ha after I drove that car I was sold, I knew I wanted a 'Z' car and it had to be powered by the LB9 or the L98. I ended up not buy that car for a couple of reasons. One of them was that it didn't have T-Tops and that is something that I wasn't going to compromise for. That car also had an un-explained engine compartment fire and the dealer gave me the run-around about the cause of the fire and why the rest of the engine bay (aswell as the engine itself) had been cleaned up while the hood liner still had a huge burnt hole in it.

There used to be a shop in Pleasanton called 'Camaro Headquarters'. I got my car in 2001 from that place. I liked it because all this guy did there was buy and sell 3rdgen Camaros and 3rdgen Firebirds as well as some parts along with them. He is out of business now but, that was a good place at the time. I picked out my car because I liked the dark red metallic paint, it was an option level 3 car, it was an IROC, with the L98 and T-Tops with the leather interior. Ha ha don't get me wrong I've had to do a lot of work over the years to get my car to where it is now (as I am sure we all have) but I've been very happy with the purchase I made.

You could always get an LB9 '91-'92 Z28 T-Top car and go crazy with modifiying it and you wouldn't have to cut out the roof. Cutting in to the factory roof can get tricky and turn out badly if you run in to trouble. I've seen a few C&C (Cars and Concepts) T-Top conversion cars and they don't look like the factory GM T-Top roof.

I forget where the thread was on here but a guy had a T-Top silver 1985 IROC that the T-Top section basically rusted out and needed to be replaced. He went to the junk yard and cut off the T-Top roof section off another car (along with some of the A-pilars & B-pillars so he would have something to graft on to his car). He cut out the rusted part of the old roof on his car, then grafted and welded on the new roof. With the rest of the body and paint work that he did after the operation was finished you would never know that car had a rusted out T-Top section at one point in time.

Re: *IROC / THIRD-GEN RIDEOUT* 8/26/12

Ha ha yeah thats good. And the car is still around! I hate it when people say that American cars don't last! Taken car of these cars can last a very long time.

Yeah I understand that, you got lucky. My original engine went out at 166,000 miles. I got my car when it had 153,000 miles and everything was stock. The only thing that wasn't was the cheap Midas muffler that was put on it. I hated that. My car was a quiet as a Lexus and that muffler sounded like crap!

Whoever had my car before didn't keep up with the maintenance. The engine smoked like crazy and there was oil coming out around the spark plugs. The year I got the new motor in (2004) I had went through 3 catalytic converters because the old engine was putting out so much oil. I could start my car in the driveway and let it run for 5-10min and there would be a pool of oil underneath the tail pipes ha ha.
