Car: '89 Trans Am GTA
Engine: WAS 350 - now L92 (alum. 378/6.2L)

Nice thought, but it's unlikely to work - when I was getting tested, they checked the VIN both at the windshield & on the sticker on the driver's side door.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe a different ECM program might not be the best thing... Marcus has chip-burning equipment, maybe w/ his help we could take a look & actually see what's going on with your engine...

BTW, as you can tell, I'm back home now, so you can swing by to pick up that saw whenever you'd like to, just give me a call...

I myself have this problem too but im trying to find a part that hopefully will have my car running better, if any of you have a temperature control vacuum switch laying around i'll take it off your hands for free or a reasonable price.

Sasa, what have you done to fix the problem(if you know what the problem is)??? Has the readings changed at all since your first failed test??

Well, after I failed the first time I replaced the pluggs and the o2 sensor. From there I tested again and failed with evertyhing 6-8 times more. Than I took it to a shop. They told me it was the o2 sensor not letting the car come to closed loop. They changed that. Than they started feeding me crap. First they told me that with EGR and the canister unplugged the car passes. So, they told me to replace both. So I did. Nothing, the numbers were pretty much the same as my first test.
HC was 4.6 and the limit is 2.5
CO was 46 and the limit is 20.
I passed everything else.

I am just pissed since my temps expire tommorow, and I am not sure if they would let me renew the temps.

Also, Tim and I checked the fuel preassure and it went from 43 to 20 in a second after the car was shut off.
I am not sure what the problem could be.
I elminated the two air pipes that go to the manifolds just so they don't accidnetly blow oxygen into exhaust.
Other than this, unplugging the canister and EGR the INJECTORS come to mind as the culprit. I figured since the vacum line on the regulator is not leaking the reagulator itself is good. I am about to take the guy who sold me the car to court.

Maybe your cat is gutted or bad? Have you checked every inch of the car to make sure that everything is plugged in. Yesterday when working on replacing the spark plugs (big pain in the butt) i found a wire loose and hanging down.

well I've got most of my emissions stuff laying around if you need anything, I don't still have the chip burning stuff I sold it, but I do still have datamaster and the cable to use it if you want to do a diagnostic run. And see what everything is doing. So tell me is the car running rich or lean? it should say on your printout from the smog place.

I just ordered svo ford injectors 19lbs. so, there goes my budget.

Put the AIR back on. The air pump injects fresh air directly into the exhaust flow and you'd be suprised at how much that will bring those numbers down. By the way, don't even think about taking the guy to court, you'll just be wasting money. Colorado is a buyer beware state and used car sales, unless through a dealer, are as is deals, period. Bottom line here is you have a car that has a problem, fix the problem and move on. There is ALWAYS a reason that people sell "perfect" cars for so little money. I looked at a "perfect" 93 Vette which was about $3500 less that the other cars I was looking at. Couldn't figure out why...low miles, check...new tires, check...clean, check...HIT IN THE REAR-CHECK. The guy blew much smoke up my *** about the car, then when I got there the thing was whacked. Live and learn Sasa, most people out there lie their asses of when they are selling things. That's why I didn't throw a Maaco paintjob on my GTA and try to pass it off as anything that it isn't. Good luck with your car, emissions problems are some of the most difficult things to fix, and the most expensive.

Never mind, BUT THANKS A LOT.

I contacted the previous owner and I am droping the car off with him. he is going to take care of the emissions and the repairs. I AM DONE.

So by next week, I'll have my car registered!

Yay!

A couple bottles of HEAT in the gas tank would get that car to pass.

Also i have seen people get gross poluters through the Etest with a can of stuff that can be bought from vatozone that guarantees your car to pass.

good luck

Well, he is bound by LAW to do it for me, even if the car is titled to me. I talked to DMV and they would not even concider a waiver. They said that the previous owner can not sell a car that can not pass emissions, thus he needs to get it done. They instructed me to call him back and what to tell him. He was very nice and he said that we will get the car done, apologized for the grief that this caused me. I also told him that if I could do the reparis I would, but I ran out of money and can't do jack.
All in all the car will have to pass emissions or he is paying me back, per DMV!

I spent good hour talking to them, and they told me exactly how it is by LAW.
LOL.

So next time you guys buy a car, make sure that it has passed emissions.

Well I stand corrected. The law has been changed since I got screwed by a non-conforming car. It seems that the seller is responsible for making the car pass an e-test. I was infomed, however, that the seller is only on the hook for a MAXIMUM of 30 days to do so, and any lawyer worth his salt could get the seller out of fixing anything after a car has so much as had an oil change or a fuel fill-up. That is straight from a lawyer that I am pretty good friends with. There are no "official" time limits, but anyone who knows lawyers knows they can talk an Eskiomo into buying ice in January. At least the guy you bought it from was cool about it and is getting your back on this one. Don't expect it to happen everytime. I personally would have helped you out on my car, but as a rule, I'll spend $1000 to save $5 on principle alone. An "as-is" sale is exactly that...AS-IS. Hopefully you'll stop having problems from here on out, and really be able to enjoy that car.

Well, I asked the DMV about having the title under my name, as well as having the car for two months. They said that the previous owner is still responsible to pass the car. They told me if he did not want to I can take him to court for selling the car that wont pass emissions. A lawyer can say whatever he wants. A lawyer I consulted told me that as long as the bill of sale does not have "as is" words in it, which it doesnt, the owner will be responsible for the emissions for as long as it takes for it to pass.
Also, it helps that the previous owner ishonest and correct about the car. Sure, they can hire a lawyer and pay him at least double if not a lot more of what it will take to pass emissions.

Just by selling me a car that does not pass emissions is braking the law!

I understand that the emissions thing is the law, but how many times have we seen people who didn't do anything wrong get screwed or people who are guilty get off (OJ Simpson comes to mind). It is nice that the guy is cool about it for sure. I'm not saying that you aren't right here, just that some people are dishonest a$$holes that will screw you just for the sake of doing so.

I don't have any buddies that live anywhere in Non emission belt.

I am getting license plate that says EPA SUX. I swear.

I always said that I will never put stickers on my car, but one thats going on there is my complaint against the "clean air act" What bunch of bull **** that is. Rapid screening , what a joke. They've been proven to not work well at all, 89% inacurate. I floor my car everytime I go past one of those rapid screens. The machine gets confused.
Burocratic bastards.

Oh, Shad, I did not mean anything personal by my comment. I was just ticked off at the time. Would you be able to make it to the party???

I'm new to this thread but a trick I have used in the past to pass emissions is to drive my car seventy miles per hour for about twenty minutes just before taking it in for the emissions check. This process super heats the catalytic converter, making it very efficient at consuming pollutants. As long as you don't have to wait long once you've arrived at the emissions check point such that the converter cools down, you should be fine.

They shut off the car for about 20 minutes before they test it. I've argued with them, got asked to leave the last time, the manager said thats the procedure, so I just tossed it back to the owner to see what he can do for me cuz it really is not my problem.
