455
Got a friend with a 455 "rocket" motor.. I know the thing is gunna need rebuilding, being pretty damn old.. He's asking like 300 for it, complete.. I think it's got around 75,000 miles on it, and the outside is really rusty.. Would take a LOT of work to get it in good condition again but the heads and block aren't cracked or warped.. Anyone think it would be worth it? Anyone even know where I would look for cams and rotating assemblies for that thing? Even gaskets?

The 455 rocket is an olds motor, so none of the 454 BB parts would work, at least the biggies like heads/cam either manifolds. Ive seen a set of heads and a few cams for the motor in jegs but Im sure there is a place with better selection.
The down side to building an Olds engine is cost of aftermarket parts. Mondello performance specializes in Oldsmobile aftermarket performance, but they are expensive. Another down fall is that there aren't many knowledgable engine builders that do Olds engines. It would be a serious pain to try to get that engine into a thirdgen being that its much wider than a small block chevy.

You'd end up paying out of your a$$ to build an olds motor. No parts from a 454 chevy bb will fit, it's totally different and you won't even machine 'em to get 'em to work. What kind of car is this going in? You'd be better off building a mild bb chevy and putting it in there. Nowadays you can fit anything in anywhere
And you'd have a killer ride with a bb in it

Seen Buick 455, a lind one at that and it runs 12.20's in a believe a 86 or 87 TA at the Nats every yr i go :-) lots of fun :-) Those are wide as the Olds engines basically, so if it fits u could make an Olds 455 fit to without going crazy........
Sides and weenie can build a chevy real men are different :-)
And all Olds engines are "rocket" they all use the same architecture from the 307 to the 455 (330 and 400 have 39 degree valvetrain though kinda oddballs)...the larger engines just have basically a taller deck, the heads and stuff can be made tow rok from one to the other within reason just like a pontiac engine

Hmm.. I know the 455s are generally torque motors but 12's are a little high for what I'm wanting.. It's ok though I don't think I'm going to bother with all that rebuilding on an old motor.. If I'm going to do any building might as well be new.
