Dropping an Olds. 455 on a 700R4.

Is my 700R4 from my '86 Firebird able to bolt on to my newly acquired Olds. 455? I love that transmission, the overdrive is especially nice, but what will I need to do, if anything, to make this mating of souls work? I figure on having to get hardened internals for SURE, but will I have to get a special adapter kit to make the two bolt together? Is this even smart, or should I go with a different tranny? Now what about my limited slip rear end? Trash it and get something different? Will it be able to handle the gobbs of torque this 455 is going to crank out? Thanks for your time!

the 455 BOP's were serious torque engines, the 700r4 will work with a trans adapter from from TCI makes it (like 55$) or you can run the 2004r which was the BOP version of the 700r4, dont even attempt to put a stock or rebuilt to stock 700r4 behind that engine, it will grenade it in a second, its going to have to be pretty stoutly built to handle the 455's torque, the axle ***should*** be ok, power doesnt really kill axles, its hard launchs, if its a stock or really mild engine i wouldnt worry about it.

Do I just go to TCI.com to find them, if not, what is there web site address. Also how high of a stall will I need to run on this? Will my 3.08 gears be suffice, or will I need to go deeper? Thanks for your input!

A 700 can be built to handle torque like a 200-4R. They are completely different transmissions. Both can be strong, both can be weak.

The 700 comes in a Chevy boltpattern; you can use an adapter plate, but I have not heard good things about them. Anyone have good luck using an adapter plate?

Most 200-R4 transmissions come in a "universal" boltpatter that will bolt to BOPC and Chevy.

As for a "stall speed" recommendation, find out the torque curve for your engine and speak with a convertor company about your application - torque curve, vehicle weight, gears, and driving application/style.

With an Olds 455 though, you aren't going to want much higher than stock stall speed, though. The Olds power starts coming on relatively soon after idle, and the motor likely won't rev very high either.

Use your converter to get the engine into its power band.

cince you're going to have overdrive, you can go with better gears in the back. also look into "level 10" transmission site, they should have some good info on building up the trans. pontiac high performance did a whole series on putting a 200-4r in an old gto (not a buick but go with it). they addressed issues such as tv adapting, driveshaft mods, what year tranny to get & why. the first issue was the april 88. they also did the whole series in their 2nd tec mag, think it was erly this year. the more info, the better.

Will a 454 bolt right up to my 700R4? I sure hope so, because I plan on trading my 455 for a 454 becasue of that.

I build both of these units, either will work fairly well to about 550-575 hp & thats where the 2004R can do a better job, give me a call and I will do my best to answer any questions you might have on either unit.
