SD swap.
To swap to SD from my 85 MAF all I need is a SD harness ECM, prom, Relays and MAP right? Do I need to convert to electronic speed sensor ? How would that work even if I had to?

uggghhhh
It should have been fine just repinning? Are u 100% triple sure you just didnt do something stupid? Its what I usually do when something is screwing me?
If you are creative u can do it either way, the code has a bit for mech/optical vss. trick is making it show up as either/or. Has to be set up the correct for one or the other.
Going straight to speed sensor(at trans) would be more or less easiest.

I tried repinning to the newer MAF and no go. The car is not near me and i have to make a day of it every time I actually make any time to work on it and I am just plain sick of messing with this stupid wiring! It is beyond my ability to do with the limited time I have. I would love to fix the harness i have but, I just dont see that happening.
For all I know I fried 2 165 ecms before i had it all wired correctly and now it wont work. I really dont wana spend tons of money, but at this point im not sure i have many other options. I am wishing now that I just left it how it was.

I have another electronic speed sensor lying around... but isnt my speedo mechanical? how will my speedo itself work without a cable? Or does the cable go to a sender that sends an electronic signal to the speedo?

Could make it real easy and cheat :-)
9c1 cop cars had a cable/electric all in one speedo sensor on the trans :-)
And yes it goes to a driver in the inst cluster, remember cruise still needs signal from somewhere

when my car was on jenny craig she lost her cruise control
Its also a T5 car if that matters. Why exactly does the ECM need to know my speed?

ok, I managed to score a complete SD harness and ECM froma guy on e-bay for 100 bucks! All I need to do is plug it in, get a MAP sensor and wire in a resistor so i can use the knock sensor I already have right? I know that I should also deal with those speedo issues, but i want to try and get it running 1st.

Good deal.
It will run without the VSS, but for proper operation and tuning you will need to get it hooked up.
Can purge, EGR, and ICa functions all use VSS as well as a few other things.
Give me call if u need more info.
If u need my number PM me.

Easiest is to swap out for small cap and remote coil.
U can make an adapter harness to go from one to the other.
I've never had to, but it only involves a couple of wires. Painless harnesses and the like come with the adapter to use either distrib.
