As the title says what should my 1986 Trans Am be running if i have:
-5.7 TPI
-Mild Cam
-Custom Chip
-Magnaflow Muffler
-High Flow Cat.
-Probuilt 700R4 (Street/Strip from Pro-Built Automatics(dont have yet but should reall soon.)
-3.27 Posi w/ limited slip
Just kinda curious since the High School Drags are coming up in May. My uncle says i should be in the high 13's (with old stock sliping tranny). I have an estimated 285HP at the crank but only 159.6 RWHP and 275.3 RWTQ since my tranny is going bad, and is getting worse.

I think high 13s should be right. I too am in High School and I doubt I would go to a High School Drag Day. Too much **** for my blood, but if you want to go and whoop up on them, good luck!

Is there any good techinques for a good launch and times?
I lauch my car by stepping on the brake, getting the RPM's up (in 'D') to about where the wheels want to break loose but dont and then when the light turns green let off the brake and ease it all the way to the floor quickly. Is this a good method? I have never raced at the tracks before.

Umm.... Yikes, your slipping tranny is costing you that much power huh? Get that new on in Asap, cause you'll probably lose if you don't. Don't forget all the rich kids with their "daddy's" car.

Launching in our L98's is a bitch... I spin the tires on the street often when I try to launch it. You can sacrifice a smidge of ET for consistent take offs by learning to feather it into WOT. With the probuilt 700R4 I think you're in the land of Mid 13's - enjoy!

Launching my car is actually pretty easy, it gains traction real well and rarely slips unless in the rain or just mashing it from a stop doing it on purpose.
Rezinn: Where do you get 15's from? My car with the stock 305 (LB9) ran a mid/low 14 (14.3 or 14.4 or somethin).

How the heck do you figure 285hp anyway. Mild cam with no intake or exhaust mods (muffler isn't exactly going to cut it) isn't going to do a whole lot, and the chip is fairly worthless. I'm just not seeing much of any kind of gain over the stock power levels like that. I'll give ya a low/mid 14 provided you fix your tranny. What torque converter are you getting to go with the tranny?
he can't possibly be 16s
i'm 16s and i have 170 stock at the crank.. i have more with mods
he's talking about 160 at the wheels which is totally different...
he might be in 15s.... but i say low... cuz he has a whole lot of torque more than my v6
so i say high 14s low 15s...
the torque is the decider on this one for me...
if its horsepower i'd say 15s... about mid to high...
but once again hes talking to the wheels... not at the crank...
and he has more than enough torque to spare
i'm at 16s with
170 hp at crank
200 tq at crank stock
i have minor mods mind u...
tho if i were u... i get that tranny rebuilt now!
cuz ur gonna lose it through those races...
i'd tell u to learn how to manually shift like i do... which really helps honestly...
but... u'd lose it...
so fix it...
or my honest advice is don't race...
u'll lose the tranny on your daily driver(if it is)
for a lousy race...

high 15s, after u get off the line and go through ur torque band how much hp u have is alot more important then ur torque, and after u get off the line u spend most of ur time in ur hp band(thats y they came out the the lt1 engine so that u could reach higher rpms which equals a longer and higher hp band), atleast till u sift again, thats y most stock 5.0 mustangs can beat a stock 5.0 tpi camaro!!!!!!!!!!

For those of you that say 15's i was wondering what my times would be if i had the new tranny. I hopefully will be ordering it in the next month or so. I say i have ABOUT 285HP cuz the engine the guy put in was 300HP (crank) engine give or take a few wich is about 260 at the wheels (with the mild cam). With the custom chip i gained about 20HP and the High flow cat and muffler i gained about 5HP for the both. I know my car is quit powerfull and capable of a LOT more power at the wheels. The place that did my custom chip (Bloodenterprises.com) drove it both before and after and said my tranny is causing me to loose quit a bit at the wheels. Thanks for all the replys.
when somebody says they put a 300hp engine in your car, that is assuming that the engine is in good tune, which is what the chip would help to do. i doubt it's gonna ADD MORE hp, instead it will just make the engine come closer to its potential power output.
if you have the power you say you have, and get a transmission that works, along with a decent converter, 13's should be possible

I say get a 2400 stall, PI or Yank. You don't want to bypass too much of that TPI torque. As for you cam description, I call mine a mild cam also, so that is pretty vauge.
That's not exactly mild!
Considering that you don't list headers among your mods, I would say that that cam is pretty stout; not to mention that, if I remember correctly, the upper reaches of it's powerband may be beyond the reach of your stock TPI...
