Another "What will I run" question...

My brother is working on my car right now. He's trying to tune it...I don't have the time or tools where I am to do it. Just wondering what ya'll think of my setup and how it will run...1991 camaro rs, 383ci N/A, holley 750 4bbl vacuum sec. w/electric choke, weiand stealth manifold, dart iron eagle heads (2.02, 1.60 w/72cc combustion chambers), comp cams 282HR (.510 in, .520 ex, i think), TCI 2500 stall, rebuilt auto, 2.73 open rear. I think that's about it, my bro and I are hoping for at least 13's especially w/that rear. What do ya'll think...all i know is that when it's running, it runs like a b!t$#

You need a lot more gear in the diff. Those highway gears are going to kill you no matter what you try to do.

Guestimate? mid 13's

These highway gears ARE killing me. Took the car out tonight and just couldn't beat any of the cars that mattered. Kept up with a Turboed Camaro SS through second and had a brand new GT wipe the floor w/me. How would 3.42's do in the car? My brother has an 87 IROC that he put a 355 in but he has to drive on the highway everyday to work so he was thinking about us swapping rears.

If your transmission doesn't have an overdrive then 3.73 is about as much as you want to go and still be able to get good mileage on the highway. If you have OD then 4.10's are nice.

From your current combination the 3.42 - 3.73 would probably be all you need.

Ok...here's the way I figure it (maybe I'm wrong). I was real disappointed with the way my car performed the other night considering the fact that it has the 383 now. I figure that my car has just as much, if not more HP and torque than most of those cars...but I know for a fact that the new SS camaros and the new GTs and Cobras come with 3.45+ gears and posi trac. I think I was doomed to lose to all of those cars with my 2.73's and the one-wheel peel. Is this a good assumption? My bro said he will really consider swapping rears with me. He drives his on the highway everyday so he would like the 2.73s and I have a 700R4 in my car and I would really benefit from the 3.42s, right? How much faster could my my car be with 3.42s or 3.73's?

i think i have the 210 runners...i went with 72 cc chambers so my compression would be low enough for a street car...i have flattop pistons ya know. Right now my bro is checking out the dist., car has been popping and the timing has been tuned so that's about all we can think of to do. Also, talking to him about swapping rears, he has the 3.42's.

once upon a time, i had a 1986 caprice with a 383 in it. 9:1 compression, chevy double hump heads with mild port work, 470ish lift cam and holley 750 dp. car had 700r4 and 3.73 rear. car weighed 4100 and went 14.0.

Given that, you should be at the very least at around 13.8-13.9. Gears will definately help you a lot.

what gear you pick depends a lot on what rpm range the motor can handle. I would say if you swap a 3.42 rear in that car, you will have a smile on your face for a while.

good luck with it
