Fuel cell and lines must be isolated from the drivers compartment. All the specs are in the rulebook. There are still some pics on my web site of how I mounted my cell in the rear and fabricated a rear firewall. The fuel cell is now moved to the front of the car (battery relocated and sealed off differently)

i had my gas tank sumped....only cost $60 for labor at a radiator/gas tank repair place. The sump i think was another $50. so it's cheaper than a cell as well.

it's like a fuel cell only cheaper, plus i can use factory return lines.

Depends on exactly what you want to do with the car. 4 gallons of fuel in a cell is a lot less than fuel in a factory tank. 4 gallons in a factory tank isn't very much inside a large tank and you should try to have the same amount of fuel on every run to keep all the variables the same.

A factory tank also weighs 25 pounds empty.

im going to put my cell back where yours is stephen,

but since my car sees alot of street use im going to use a 15-16 gallon cell (appropriately sized to fit back there)

probably fab up a hinged/latched cover of required thickness aluminum to go over the top.

you can get them with built in GM sending units for the gas gauge too...which is b/a

the one i was looking at was plastic/polyethylene or whatever, foam baffled, and sumped with 2 -8 outlets, a -6 return on top, and a -6 vent port....it was only like 180 bucks from summit....and rci makes a similar one in aluminum for 220 bucks, both with the fuel sender

I have a 15 gallon fuel cell in my car, custom made by Triangle Engineering. Even though my car has been back-halved, you can set your car up similarly, at least as far as the firestop is installed. The carpeted "shelf" over the fuel cell (picture below) has a piano hinge at the front, so it can be pivoted forward to gain full access to the "trunk" area, and to remove/install the fuel cell as necessary. It also has an aftermarket fuel sending unit that is compatible with the factory fuel gauge, and a direct read dial on top of it to watch as you fill the tank.

Are you sure you need a rear firewall to be legal? I've seen alot of installs in thirdgens and other models where there is no rear firewall...

well NHRA rules states that there needs to be a firewall....but then again i've seen lots of cars as well which have no firewall....one ran at route 66....NHRA track and got passed tech. He had a 10 point cage though....and was running 10.80s

any thoughts?

By the rules there should be a rear firewall. If you don't have one and tech refuses to let you race then you don't race. You could mount a battery behind the drivers seat and mount a NOS bottle beside the drivers seat without a purge tube if you wanted to but neither will pass tech.

Tech inspectors are not highly trained personel. They have a rulebook just like you and at times try to look at over 100 cars in a couple of hours. That means each car gets looked at for only a couple of minutes to try and get everyone through tech as quick as possible. Don't be surprised if they miss something one day then catch it the following week.
