I was the slowest...

Man, they had the "Pinks" at Houston.......I went for test, and tune ran 15's, all the others ran 12's, 11's, and 10's...........I ran a15...I was the slowest there. So humbled.........I had no idea that was going on..I was the first car to run...I did one pass, and sit down after that........There was even a 7 second car there....I was the only one on street tires...........Still had fun tho..........Tom

we all have to start somewhere, and a 305 tbi is one of the slowest of the bunch of stock thirdgens.

I'd rather watch "Pinks" with two evenly matched 15 second cars going at it then some dumbbass with a sub 10 second ride crying about wanting an 8 carlength lead over his competitors 12 second ride.

That's kind of what happened to me when I first took my '89 Formula LO3 to the track. My first run was with a turbo Talon (he beat me by like 2 tenths of a second) the second time I got up there, a friggin fox body stang pulls a 60' wheelie and runs 10.??? seconds on me!!!

I was like alright, I'm going to sit down now, that was embarrassing!

You know what guys, we all have to start somewhere. Dont get down on yourself, cuz even if your car was faster...there are 100 more ready to knock it off the top at any given time. Almost everybody-unless they were born with a silver spoon-starts out just like you guys and if you enjoy working on the car and have the means to upgrade-you will, and things will get faster...it's just a time progression thing, and once you start running faster, the taste is muuch better since you earned it. Hell, it took me 3yrs and alot of money to get where I was at....alot of money. So just be patient, and have fun. I've won as many races when I was running 14.8X as i do running 11.XX.

Race for fun, not to win. You might have the most fun in the slowest car, and there is always some beast lurking around to blow you away, no matter how fast you are.

You know what...truer words have never been spoken. I take that back, they have been spoken before when I was prepping the car for no box/modified class. Everybody told me it will take the fun out of racing, blah, blah, blah....and like always I did what I wanted to do and after 2 years, many thousands of dollars spent to travel and run, eveything these guys were telling me was true. Once you take the step up, build a car to run against track only cars in a no box/modified classes....you are no "working". Entry fees are higher, maintenence costs are higher, travel expenses-hotels, truck fuel, buy back s if need be, etc....we started oout in street class paying $35 entry for a $200 purse. After the step up it was $150 entry, $50 buy back if you lost 1str ound, plus expenses....aerages out with my accountant and running the track 20 minutes from my house was $400 per weekend......then add a new set of slicks on top of that every month to stay competative....see where I'm going??!!

runnig faster is fun for bragging rights, but I promise I will be posting back again this year on here and telling about winning with my slow azzed 12.?? car in no box/modified....it's not always about how fast you can go...good for bragging...dont mean squat at the end of the day when your getting your check!!!!!

Could'nt agree with you more...I bracket raced for a good number of years in the 80's and early 90's....Spent alot of money to run the 11's, and be competitive.......It was alot of work, and I was alot younger then...Dont have the energy to put in it now, but it sure felt good to be back on the track after a 16 year break.........You can bet I will be back there next week...........Tom

Re: I was the slowest...

When I had my 83z years ago, I thought it was fun to run the friday nite street brackets and the car was only running 14.5's on street tires. Trying to figure out what to dial in at, trying to nail the tree, looking in the rear-view mirror to see where the guy in the other lane was... I thought all of that was a pretty good time for $20 spent. Even won 2nd place one night for $50. I guess I'm easy to please.

Nah, your a perfect example of racing at its most fun. We can't all have a fire breathing 9 second murderhorse, but we can all have a blast at the local 1/4 with what we have

This is probably the only series i will run....I've always wished they did this format, and now with Scott at the helm of all of our NHRA tracks-except tri-state in earlville, this is the series I've always dreamed about...getting to travel around the state, and out of for a few, chasing points in a big bracket series with a killer top prize!!! The best thing IMO, is I wont be married to the track to do it...told my wife I'll be the National Guard racer LOL...putting in my 1 weekend per month, until the end when we have 2 weekends. I just wish, for all us racers in my area and in minnesota, the cordova was a 2 race weekend instead of 2 single days at seprarate dates....5 hrs on the road round trip for me, and much longer for alot of the guys I run with at CFR...

I kind of shot myself in the foot though, I planned on installing my brother in laws back up 355 in my car, just having fun this year on the cheap...then I helped a buddy finally fire his 406 he's been building the car/drivetrain over 5 yrs and I heeard that motor rumbling, looked at the car, and made my mind up to build the 427sbc I've had in my basement since last winter. I just dropped the shortblock and cam off to get that all checked and rebuilt, currently got MANY bugs out trying to locate the best deal on the heads I'm going to run, and then it's 3 weeks before I will get them due to Brodix sending them out for CNC at a different location, I have most of my other parts coming so the heads will be my hold up my fault for procrastinating so I will most likely miss the first race unless I can conger up a car to drive that weekend...should'nt be a problem, just a PITA.

I'll wait to see what the dyno says my actual numbers are, but so far 2 different computer programs are putting my in the 647-658hp range and 598-626tq...should make my fat street car run pretty good I hope Anxious to hear this 4/7 cam swap thing in person...heard they sound terrible at idle like they're missing, but smooth out under load...we'll see....excited but at the same time dreading this excessive payout to get it running so quickly too
