Re: best way to warm up tires?

mine dont take much of a burnout and they hook well at 18 psi even tho i ran them at 16-17. just spin them in first for a few seconds and then drag them forward abit out of the burnout box into the staging lanes. Line up and your good to go. there isnt all that much smoke. My old ET streets tho were harder to the touch and required a longer burnout

Bring 'em in the living room and put them by the heater. Well, if you are single.

Re: best way to warm up tires?

i like to roll through the water box and spin them over just enough to get water over the surface, then roll foward of the water box till you're on dry pavement. i blitz mine really hard in first, bang into second, then third almost immediatly (once wheel rpms are fast enough obviously). i then roll out of the burnout when i can see good sized puffs of smoke in my mirrors. total time of burnout from initial romp on the throttle is about 12 seconds.

Re: best way to warm up tires?

my first burnout when the slicks have been sitting a long time, is quite the smoke show, but each burnout after that is just, 1/2/3 then roll out when I see smoke in my mirrors is higher than my rear spoiler. But typically I have someone on the line for me each time, and they know how to put me in the box and tell me when to let off the brake to roll out to be most consistent. That first burnout sure is a crowd pleaser, gets rid of the "hardness" of the tread and after that the tires get sticky again. Might try some of that formula V this winter on my slicks while it's up on the lift, but not sure if that's just snake oil or not.

I'm using Hoosiers, but have used MT's. I just turn them until they pull down a little. All you want to do is clean and dry them. Big smoky burn-outs are for crowds and tire salesman, not traction.

Not long ago John Force had "issues" during his burnout, never even turned the tires. Car ran a "normal" ET, just like it did when he did the normal long smoky burnouts. Earlier this year, Tony Pedregon had a little tech sidebar (Q commercial, really) in National Dragster, answering a fan's "question" - he said the burnout is to get heat in the drivetrain, not for traction.

Funny how that message just doesn't seem to get through to people.

Re: best way to warm up tires?

force won that round, and said just built heat in the clutch, didnt even need a burnout, or something like that, but those might be just a little diffrent then et streets and lets face it usualy the track prep might be a little better then say commerce on friday night lol

Re: best way to warm up tires?

my race track gets pissed when street cars do burnouts that go past the staging lights. there is no need for that

Re: best way to warm up tires?

unless it a dragster or car with no front brakes, doing a burnout across the stage line will get you kicked out everytime around here

Of course, stacking tires on the white carpet in the dining room in front of the 5 turbos on the dining room table is another story.

Re: best way to warm up tires?

Roll into the water box, spin em for a second, roll out of the water box, stop, do a burnout for a second or two, then let off the brake and let the tires chirp.

Re: best way to warm up tires?

That will most likely coat the wheel wells with water which will drip down on the tires when staged.

Pull through the water box until you’re sitting on the slightly damp area just past the box where people dragged the water out (the water on your tires will also run down a little when you stop to position yourself). Start your burnout, I usually use second gear on a stick, shift to second with an auto (I almost never have to generate enough heat to justify shifting into 3rd), watch the tires in the rear view mirror. After a second or three the tires will go from spinning and sort of smoking to really making thicker smoke, and will start loading down the drivetrain. At that point I let off the brakes and let the car roll out, that makes sure that you don’t have any chance of the tires ending up with a wet spot around the water box, lets you feel how the tires are pulling down on the drivetrain. No dry hop, no screwing around, go stage and go…

Re: best way to warm up tires?

Only differance for me is I start in 2nd stab the throttle and shift to 3rd immediatly. But I'm running a 5.67 gear out back. I'm going to a 406 and a glide this year. So I'll start in low and shift to high. The tires should be 15 to 20 degrees more than track temp, accorging to the tech guys at Hoosier.
