165 shot of nitrous + stock diff = bad
My best time on a 145hp shot was 11.0039 @ 125mph, 1.55 60ft. This was on the stock gm 10bolt diff(only thing I did was weld the axle tubes and put a TA diff cover on)
I wanted the "10second" slip bad so I upped the juice.
I hit the nitrous out of the hole too, here is the result.
The "TA" aluminum diff cover

First thing I saw when I took the cover off

The pieces that I took out

The end result

Good thing I was the last car of the day and the last race of the year!!
Time for a ford 9"

That sucks....
I used to have a 1982 Indy Pace car that had a 406 with the stock rear end and would spray that with a 250 shot running 10.50's and all I would have to do is replace the gears and bearings every year.

Ouch!!!! that sucks!!!! What does a tow from Gimli cost by the way....? Just in case I break something next year.
It's bad when you hope to run so strong that you expect to break things
I have to get bigger injectors and a tune first, cause my AF ratio was way too lean to drive let alone do a 1/4 mile.
----------
Do you plan on doing the ford 9" yourself?

Re: 165 shot of nitrous + stock diff = bad
Although they are much stronger, a 9" is not indestructible. Here's what I did to mine earlier this year. I caught it before it failed and caused any damage. A light tap with a hammer and the piece broke right off.

I threw in a spare center section to finish off the season. I have a Moser aluminum center section just waiting for a different set of gears before I swap it out.
It's those 6000 rpm transbrake launches that caused problems

Re: 165 shot of nitrous + stock diff = bad
Anybody got failure stories on a 9 bolt? I just put 4.11's in it and plan on hitting it with the juice. It it fails, I won't be able to get parts for it.
Re: 165 shot of nitrous + stock diff = bad
Took a tooth clean off. You could hear the tapping sound on the ring gear when the gap in the pinion passed by. Not knowing exactly what the damage was, I made another dozen passes, however traction was starting to go away and I never laid down the same 60'. Probably saved the rear from shredding completely.
Still drove it another 300 hiway miles in a round about way home and somewhere along the way another tooth broke off and things got really noisey. Got home under my own steam though.

Re: 165 shot of nitrous + stock diff = bad
I had a spare differential in my shop and removed the ring and pinion from it.
Had to change from 3.70's to 3.27's.
Lots of choice if you want to buy an offshore gear set like Motive Gear ( which I won't do ). If you want to spend the extra dough you can pick a USA gear set for about three times the cost.
My understanding is that the 9 bolt isn't worth the dollars on gears and rebuilding.
Can you say Moser?

Re: 165 shot of nitrous + stock diff = bad
broke the spyder gears in my 3.27 9 bolt on a high 13 second pass. was cuttin 1.7x 60 foots on it tho
couldnt find parts and got a 10 bolt LS1 rear end complete for 300 bucks. less than 30K miles on it. Holding up great so far
