Engine output
Engine output
I realize that there are many factors involved in drag racing. Traction, weight, and skill to name a few. However at the heart of it is the engine. As such I feel a 383 stroker is my best option. However in building one, what output should I be shooting for. I'm considering 410 HP with about 420 ft lbs of torque. I'm also shooting for the 12 second range. Thanks for any help.

Re: Engine output
do you have a 350 engine in your vehicle presently? what's your budget? To run 12s a simple junkyard pullout vortec motor from 96-98 that would have vortec heads and be 350 cubes would be more than sufficient. Run a XE274 or similar cam and 3600stall, 3.73 rear gear and a 26x10 slick and you'd meet your 12s with ease.
Re: Engine output
I currently have a mild 305 bored .30 over. However I wish to build a ride that will last me and be a possible daily driver. I could include a list of what has been done so far. However to keep it short... I have a 700R4 that's been modified (beefier gears) and a modified rear axle still running the 3.73
gears. I know pulling a motor from the junk yard is cheaper, but the engine and tranny are the 2 places I wont go to the junk yard for. As far a budget, I'm looking at 4K for just the motor. Thanks for the inputs.

Re: Engine output
There is no such thing as "beefier gears" for the trans.
3.73 is as low(numerically high) as you'll want to run in a 7.5" 10-bolt. - A junk yard vortec 350 is indeed your best bet, just pull it apart and freshen it up properly. With some mild head work, a decent cam, and a corresponding converter it will run 12's no problems and be as reliable as any other combination at that level.
