A frind of mine has a 3000GT GL. I think it is stock so it would have 222HP and 205 torque. It is a 5spd and is also aobut 3200 pounds. Would I win in a race with the mods I have in my sig? I know that it isn't much, but the car runs like a dream after this new clutch. If I couldn't win now, would 3.42 posi gears do the trick. That is my next project so maybe I could put the race off till then.

I know that the turbo version is fast, but I thought that I might have a chance against this one. It isn't turbo.

The only way to truly know, is to race him. Hell, race him even if you know your going to get beat! I like to win as much as the next guy, but I still have fun even if I lose.

This is a quote from a pro road racer I know " I'd rather run last in a full out race, than to NOT run at all ". I agree, its too much fun NOT to race it, give it a try.

sean,
thats a damn good Quote. I hear over and over at school that people wont race someone because they think they will get beat. And it pisses me off sometimes. Racing isnt about being the fastest always. There will always, always be someone faster. So I say whats the use of having a fast car that you never race B/C you are afraid of getting beat. I race all the time and my car isnt even all that fast but i like to see what i can do next to a car that i know is faster.
Well sorry to ramble on so much.
later

P.S. Race because you love it, sit in the pits if your afraid to lose.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what kind of car it is, it all depends on the skills of the opponent. I have noticed in my area that the guys with the "fast" cars can't drive worth crap. Race him, then you would know what you need to do to waste him, like in the acceleration you may be better in so why would you get "power parts" if you need to corner?

Just my 2cents, do some investigattin' and find out.

I fully plan on racing her, but I just wanted to do a little research before I started talking trash. There is nothing worse than a poser that thinks his car is the best in the world, with all show and no go. I'm sure that it would be a close race, because I'm much better with a clutch than she is. I just wondered how the two cars would compare. She has more HP, but I have more torque. Guess there is only one way to find out. "Wide open till you see god, then brake."

Its gonna be a close race. I've beat a 3000gt GL in a race. The thing sounded funny because the guy used harley davidson mufflers for an exhaust! But, i have a TPI powered car, and i think my car has more hp stock then yours. But, then again your racing a GIRL j/k it doens't matter what sex they are, but what does matter is how good can she drive that thing?

You should beat it, as long as you're good with a stick and use the full potential of your car. I've read time and time again that those things are boats...one magazine even said that the VR-4's weren't sports cars, they were touring cars, because they weigh 3600 pounds!!

One of those boat's without the turbo is pretty much useless...

hey man you should be able to beat that thing. I raced a 93 94? ( i dont know exactly) 3000gt VR4 and i had him in my rear view all the way up to about 100, then he came flying by me, but i had him up till then. I dont know much about his car (condition etc..) and im not sure how good of a driver he was, but i beat him, and his was a twin turbo, you should have a good chance....

It really dosent matter if you loose, it is just a blast to race. the other day, I raced a viper, with my 84 305 LG4 Carb, bone stock, with about 135,000 miles on it. Needless to say, I got my *** kicked, but i can still say I raced a Viper. I never noticed how pretty the back of a viper is either.

my only suggestion would be if you are gonna do gears you may want to try 3.73's with a posi instead of 3.42's. 3.73's are the best gear going for a close to stock tbi car. you may also want to check out the tbi section for other ideas and do the ultimate tbi mods in the tech section. you could knock most of a second off your et and then just kick the livin' crap out of her in a race.

Bring it back to basics.

Both cars would be similar in performance down the typical 1/4. Simply eliminate the obvious things that kick most people's *** in a race: Your launch and your shift points.

If you don't know how to power shift without over-revving, don't try it.

Leave with little to no burnout (1/2 throttle or a little more) and ease into it out of 1st gear if you're not good at feathering the clutch.

Don't turn the wheel at all, especially through 1st and 2nd gear. Closest distance between 2 points is a straight line.

Don't shift the thing at 5500 RPM, the 305 is pretty much spent after 4500, so shift it early if anything, I'd probably try 4600 just because it's hard to shift early.

Be quick and precise, don't miss a gear gettin' over-excited, and you should spank her without even doing a tune up. Good luck!

Oh-and be careful, dude.
