will a camaro beat a monte?
will a camaro beat a monte?
I'm just curious, but will a third gen camaro beat a 4th gen monte?(83-88) I know they both run 305s, and some of them are tbi or carbed....Both car's weights have to be close... Any one raced a stock camaro against a stock monte?

Monte Man - I own both.
I have an 83 M/C SS with the L69.
I have an 88 IROC with the L98 (5.7).
Both are stock. My IROC will crush my SS.
I can't speak for the performance of the carbed Camaros nor the TBI Camaros. However, my instincts tell me that the Camaro would likely be faster in stock trim.

Hey KeithO,, I own both also
85 MC SS (came stock with the L69) - now with maxed out 406
86 IROC (came stock with a 305TPI) - now with a "mild" 355 TPI
Monte Man,, I bought my SS new and raced a number of 3rd gens when they were new. As much as I love the SS, stock it was a slug running 16.20's,, after a "super tune" it could run a 15.78. L69 3rd gens with automatics could do a little better than that,, the L69 5 speeds could run in the 15.30 range. About the only V8 3rd gen car the SS could outrun stock vs stock was the LG4s,, then later on the TBIs.

Heres one for you-
87 Monte SS- 3.73s- 88 IROC 305TBI/auto 2.73s
16.7 @ 81mph 17.0@80 mph
The Monte had the 3.73 advantage and pulled
harder up in the RPM range, but the TBI is stronger off the line. All times are at
3500ft and ARE not corrected to sealevel.

BadSS I am not trying to flame anyone and maybe i didn't read it right but as far as i know NO L69 Monte SS came factory with a manuel tranny. I have only seen one and the was put in by the owner. It was a 5.7L built after the performer RPM edelbrock engine... 420HP... was damn fast and fast when he hit the 150 NOS... anyways i prolly have my facts wrong but thats what i have read. I am thinking were talking about a 3rd gen camaro?

My RS with the 305 TBI has beaten a Monte Carlo SS from an even roll of about 40mph up to about 85mph. My TBI car is about as stock as they get. It very close only pulled a fender on him. I think off the line the TBI would have done a little better.
In fact I was wonder if the Monte was a TBI also cause it was an excellent race.

Red91Bird:
You didn't didn't read it right,, or I was unclear. It was the 3rd gen L69 5 speeds that went 15.30s. There were no 5 speed Montes Carlo SS from the factory. 1983 and 1984 had TH350 w/ 3.42 gears. 1985 up had the 200R4 w/ 3.73 gears. All the 83 up SSs had computer quads also.
