Mighty Z06 falls!

I was coming home on US 31 and saw this beautiful red C5 getting ready to pull out on the highway. I'm doing 70 mph and he pulls out hard, catches up with me and paces me for about a 1/4 mile. He then passes me and start pulling away. I floored it, but being stuck in 3rd gear had no chance of keeping up with him.

We come to a light, and I see the Z06 badge on the front fender (hmm, I thought that's why I couldn't keep up with him).

Well I roll down my window and he rolled his down and we talked while the light was red. He said he had just picked it up and hadn't had a chance to take it to the track (in response to my asking him if he had it to the track). I told him I had a 383 in my car and that I think I could take him. He looked at me kind of funny then. I then told him that I had an ignition problem and that my car backfires over 3K RPM and then told him I still think I'll win. He just nodded at me and the light changed...

Well he had a slight peel and hooked up (those things can really hook) and had his nose in front of me. I rolled and floored it, had mild tire spin and launched right past him. Went up to about 75 mph and was 1 - 1 and 1/2 cars ahead of him and I was still pulling on him (and this was with heavy back firing in 1st, and mild in 2nd.

We come to the next light, and he proceeds to tell me that his 3rd gear is messed up????

He just picked up the car and it's messed up.

I know the mechanics at the dealership he bought the car from, so I'll check later to see if they do any repairs on it.

PS- Don't know if this will be locked, but just had to tell someone about the experience. The guy was pretty cool and he said that he also had a ZR1 before he bought this car. I think the 3rd gear comment was because he was embarassed (had his wife/girlfriend with him). Anyways I'm done.

On street tires, with the computer pulling out up to 15 deg of timing (due to knock count, in 80deg/90% hum July weather I ran 13.2. I've since fixed the the knock count problem, but couldn't get to the track, because the tranny went out. Tranny is fixed now, but have the ESC problem I've posted about in the TECH/ENGINE board.

I've ran regular LS1 Vettes and SS camaros and am usually 7-9 car lengths ahead of them by 100 mph. I'll be going to IRP as soon as it opens to see what she'll do with and without slicks. This is all on the stock chip which I think is holding the car back quite a bit.

Um,Z06's run mid-low 12's stock.Theres a guy on the C/F that runs 12.0 with just a shifter.Either their really was something wrong with it,he cant drive,his girl was yelling at him or your car is faster then you know.I dont see how you would beat one with a spark knock problem though.I'd be PO,if someone in a $4k IROC just beat my new $50K Vette.

Yep, I'm faster than what I know . No they don't run low 12s stock unless they are professionally driven. I have yet to see a stock LS1 run in the 12's at IRP. Most run mid 13.5s or higher (did see one run 13.3 on a cold night, but he had CAI and something else he told me - I think a programmer not sure. There are LS1s running in the twelves with some better mods there, but none stock. Like I said above, I've beaten stock C5s by 7 - 9 car lengths and I've ran 13.2(with a 2.1 60'- I have major traction problems even on a prepped track have to roll out at half throttle about '20 feet before I can floor it) with false spark knock problems on street tires. The Z06 may be faster than a reqular C5 by 7 - 9 car lengths in the quarter so that should put us about even.

The false knock count problem was fixed after I posted a 13.2 timeslip, so that didn't have any factor in this. It was an ESC problem that happens after 3k in 1st, and is not as bad in 2nd.

As for major problems with his car, I'll find out about that. I know the mechanics where he bought the car and they'll tell me if he brings it in to be worked on.

Anyways, I believe he probably knows how to drive the car since he had a ZR1 before, but who knows?

My friend, who drives an low 11 sec Chevelle and builds trannies for the Chevy dealership, drove my car after rebuilding my tranny, says that my car is a lot faster than when it went 13.2 (he had driven it then also). I quess I'll have to wait until I get to the track when it opens and post you some new #s to make you a believer, but the power is there.
