16.3 --good or bad??

Hey guys, I went to the track last weekend, and I'm going again in a few weeks. Minding it was my first time at the track, and I did three runs.. 16.8, 16.6, and 16.3 @ 82.9 mph, it's clearly my driving that gave out such slow times and not the car, or so I think.

The car is an 83 Z28 w/ a 4 bbl LG4 305 engine. Minor mods :
stock 2.5" exhaust / gutted cat/flowmaster muffler. hypertech chip, dual snorkel air filter housing (missing the tubing though,) k&n filter. Oh yea, the 700r4 tranny. (I got the 16.3 manually shifting through the low gears.)

Is 16.3 a reasonable time for this car? I had a .3 reaction (horrible I know--but again first time racing.) And people were complaining the track was dirty, it had lots of buildup and rubber on it, but I'm not even so sure if affected my car. I skipped the water and did a quick "wheel hop" to clean off the tires.

I'm going to go back to the same track, with no extra mods except for the B&M console megashifter (I've read the previous posts on it.. I'm gonna go for it though because it seems good for my application.) With the temperatures a bit colder, and if I can work on my reaction time, and shift better, is 15.9 a realistic goal? I also wanna get the tubing on the intake done but I don't think I'll have it by the time I go back to the track. Sorry for the long post but I'm really just curious to see if my car's at a respectable spot time-wise. Thanks guys!

your not really going to get more speed with a new shifter, you can play with manually shifting, around 5,500 is a good area to start and then practice shifting 200 higher, if your times are lower, then go 200 higher, and vice versa, finding the best shifting point, also finding the shorted tires you can will give you a few tenths also. but the times your posting sound about right for the car and its setup. the 305 carb wasnt one of the best setups out there.

I know the shifter won't give me more power, but I'm thinking it will help the ET's a little bit by helping me shift better. I realized with the stock shifter I was shifting earlier than I should have, because I was afraid of overshifting and hitting neutral. I was really just making sure the times were about right for the car.

I don't want to do an engine swap... I don't have enough money and it's impractical for me to have a 12-second car, I use it everyday and need some sort of gas mileage. But do you guys think headers/ignition will help out my times?

16.3 really is all I'd expect it to go.

I see a lot of those stockers at the track pulling mid to high 16s..
