Re: won my first heads up race tonight

I've always been a fan of all motor street/strip cars but I do understand the limitations, you can only go so fast before its no longer a street car. You need a power adder to be a player in any type of heads up class unless you have a huge displacement big block.

If I was going to do a power adder it would be a pro-charger. I like the simplicity of a pro-charger and the power comes in gradual. There are some really nice bolt in pro charger kits that make it simple and clean. I like turbos too but all that plumbing creates heat issues and gets in the way of everything. I've seen turbo cars where the most simple maintenance task is a huge pain because of plumbing. Not all of them are that way but most seem to be quite difficult to work on. Several of my friends run nitrous and are always trying to talk me into running it because its the most cheap and easy way to go fast. They tend to break more parts and aren't nearly as consistant which keeps me from even thinking about going that route.

Procharger would be awesome, but so expensive....

I've had my Zex plate kit for over 6yrs now, never broken anything and is very consistant. I guess I'm just lucky, but I love my set up.

Re: won my first heads up race tonight

A forced induction/nitrous system is a fast track to going faster.Cheap??. Well we used up a bottle in four runs and use 114 race gas with it.That is using the bottle very conservatively.Maybe on the button .002 in the middle of a run.At the end of the day it gets expensive.

Yeah I read about pro-charger not needing to have special internal engine parts. If your going to build a blower engine, than you going to cam it for it,have forged pistons, rods, crank shaft, compression ratios for it too and well heads built for it as well and might even need to copper O-ring the cylinders for it.Also your going to gear for it too.Haft way doing it isn't a good answer. You either do it right or not.Cheap??. Nope.

Where did you get that I'm half doing it? I'm not going to type out all the details of my plans but I have done my research.

Some of the posts I make are for the O/P.The others are for the sake of anyone else reading the thread and are for the sake of the general membership of the forum in the future.

Your one of the racers that know what's up.Sorry if you took my post wrong.I didn't intend to offend.

Man! must be nice to have a wife that's supportive of your racing/car "habbit". My wife thinks its all a waste of money. lol. I just keep telling her that the car was here first.

lol! i like that one.
mine is pretty understanding, and knows i like messing with the car junk. i put my gta in mothballs for nearly 3 years now so we could work on the house and get ourselves in a little better financial position. the past month or so i've been scrounging some stuff up to get the car going again, and she's been ok with that. got a glide for it yesterday. switching over from the th400 to keep it off the bumper.

Not trying to thread jack , but a buddy of mine gave me this zex plate nib. Having a hard time finding an entry level kit that doesnt come with a plate because i already have one. Any suggestions?

But very inconsistent from one pass to the next. - No reason not to spool it at the line, it's very easy to dump boost off with an already spooled turbo & ramp it in as needed, but it's not as easy to build boost on demand when needed.

Centri-type chargers come in pretty quick too when pullied up, but they too can be boost controlled pretty easily.

B4C - all you need is a couple noids, couple lines & a few jets. I don't know of any kits that way, but you can get those pieces reasonably enough from places such as Induction Solutions.

Re: won my first heads up race tonight

91_B4C_RS you could also look at this PDF file and buy whatever jets you need for that ZEX plate from Comp Cams. I believe you can only use their jets for their plate, so be careful. You also can use it as a guide for whatever jetting you want to run. I've had my zex plate for 6 yrs now and I love it. Here are the instructions.

Re: won my first heads up race tonight

^ That's actually a reasonably close stating point for jetting. Not nearly as fat as older tune-up sheets, even a bit better than many other newer sheets.

Hey matt...sounds like you got that lil lsx rollin down the track.

Procharger is the best IMO..but thats if youre always using it racing. For the price ..if youre driving a lot and running this event once in a while...use a 150 shot and drive home.

thanks man! we have been talking about packaging the turbo stuff vs a procharger or the like, and i'm leaning towards the more expensive blower setup. no triggers pulled yet as i'm still on the fence. the car does get raced quite a bit, and i'm planning on doing this type of racing more often. the eventual goal is to do drag week. the one thing i have committed to is that i'm going to do the holley hp efi setup. that's a sure thing, just gotta get the dough together. i just hope that a big air/air and e85 will keep my 11.5:1 motor happy with boost. only planning on 6-10 pounds

i see yours is flying now based on the sig pic! what's that little 355 got in it to go 133mph n/a?

Well then just go for it....haha

What are you waiting for???? Nobody said racing was cheap.

And my 355 is nothing special..brodix heads..erson cam...and it went 10.20 with a qjet. Lol im sitting #1 in points right now in my local street car class.

I like the turbo idea...but blower cars are dominating right now!!

Re: won my first heads up race tonight

It weighs 3100 with me in it. It was 3000 but had traction issues so i added 100# to rear to cure that..now it 60' s usually in the 1.39-1.40 range.

Unlike you i stopped street driving...it has an 8.50 moly cage and lightweight th350 trans w/ 5300 converter...4gallon fuel cell...so its not a streetable ride anymore. Lol

I like your lsx combo though and i do miss driving from time to time.

N2O brings families closer together Matt.. Do it for the family! Look at the statistics - Many Turbo guys are single.. Nitrous has been so good for my relationships I had to marry twice.

man it is aweful hard to beat a good little nitrous combo in dollar to performance. the stuff i have would go 8's with a forged shortblock pretty easily, and it only has a 236/248 hydro roller in it. the only non-stock stuff on the engine is the intake/dizzy/valvetrain. i would venture to say with a 4l80 it would knock down 20mpg. stock fuel system would have worked for my car since i have a dedicated cell up front for the nitrous.
i HATE taking this setup out of the car for turbo's, but i guess i'll go ahead with it.
