won my first heads up race tonight
we have a "street car quick 8" at my local track. it's got some pretty lose rules and has the potential to be pretty quick. i suppose the weather held off all the heavy hitters though so i got a little lime light action tonight.
rules are really open, here's what we got:
-DOT tires
-mufflers
-insured
-tagged
-must be driven into the track.
so in full spirit of the class, i put on some MT drag radials from my dad's car on some 15x7 z28 wheels, and my IROC wheels on the front with full size tires. i have also reinstalled the interior, put my wipers back on, and power steering, and drove it the 35 miles from my house to the racetrack.
good thing i put the wipers back on cause it opened up about 10 miles from the house. i had to pull off the side of the road and hop into the truck with my wife for a bit while it calmed down. back in the car i go and we get all the way out there and the weather is looking good.
ended up qualifying first with an 11.32 @ 118. i was paired up with a mid 80's cutlass first round. real clean street car. had some big olds motor in it and spray, but was actually pretty mild. the car runs 13.0's on motor, and dips into the bottom 12's on the spray. he was an easy kill and i lifted at about 1000ft and ran an 11.76 @ 93 or something along those lines.
second round i pull a fox body. carbed 5.4 with 200 shot. stock otherwise. this guy was playing the whole "broken car, shouldn't even be out here" card. he almost had me fooled. he ran a slew of 13.ohs and into the 12's. i guess he put the big pills in it during cool down cause he brought all he had. 11.38 to my 11.27! i was like WHOA?! lol.
last round i got a guy with an edge body mustang and a d1sc procharger. he spun bad and gave me the win. 11.23 @ 119. *all runs were made with foot brake and really easy launches*
given the DA was about 2400' during my best run, and all the street equipment i have on the car at the moment, i'm pretty pleased with the performance of the car. i can't help but think i'm about 30hp down somewhere...there's not telling what or where it is at this point in time though. what's even better, i drove it in, and i drove it home!

Congrats! You dont see too many cars at the track going that fast, and then driving home. Very impressive!

Good job Matt, I won that quick 8 the past two months in a row. It was rained out last month. I was going to go yesterday but I got held up at work. I would have gave you some competition LOL. It is fun though!

I'm glad you stayed home Craig, lol! I know there is some fast stuff that shows up, and I wasn't even close to set up optimally like I normally am when I trailer it in. Thanks for the congrats everyone. I hope to do a little more next season, but it looks like my season is about over. 6 classes in the fall is going to take up some serious time

That is pretty cool man, hope to see what I get into, I know I have been interested in 7.0 index, but heads up out here, street class at the 1/8 is hard, those guys always have a couple hitting 5.8 or so, don't think I would waste myoney, lol. Now fact is, I will be grudge racing some local guys I know, the BS flys out here.

Yeah I wanted to go so bad, I finally got the car into 10.2x on a 150 shot. That progressive controller is sweet. I can't wait to see what it does when the weather cools off.

Re: won my first heads up race tonight
Precisely why im looking at it., as insurance. What is a good entry level kit that won't leave me hanging? I like the looks of the NX hitman kits.
It won't run 10.7x in street trim on motor. I'm trying to get it there though.

I have a nx hitman kit with extra pills it was a complete setup i pulled off my son's fox body when he sold it. I was going to put it on the iroc but carb won't fit under the hood with the plate on. .
Re: won my first heads up race tonight
you could change converters and hit it with a 100 shot and go mid 9's.
Re: won my first heads up race tonight
^ lol, I get one hit out of a typical 10# bottle...........could make two but would be down on pressure and rich on the big end of the 2nd hit. And that's just with a 4.5-5sec blast........she's flowin just a little.
Matt, hose that thing! I'd bet the converter is up to it, obviously would leave some on the table w/o optimizing it for it but would still be fun. - Congrats though, been thinking about putting something like yours together myself; little less work, little more fun.

jp and diggler, Justin (fast383) says the converter is more than up to it. it's got 2.5% slippage on the big end on my n/a combo, it's a 9" xtreme heavy duty tsi converter and has anti-balloon plates and only flashes to about 4400 all motor. i'm thinking about pulling the 4.10's in favor of some 3.70's and putting a 100-150 shot on it...should ride.
i would do a dedicated fuel system for it with race gas in the little fuel cell, but pump gas in the tank...seem OK?

my car makes 425rwhp and ran ~7.20@96-97ish n/a with a 1.55 60'. with a 100 shot it went 6.10@110-112 with a 1.32-1.34 60'. 6.0x@114 with a 150 shot and 1.30-1.32 60'. th400 with 3.89 gear.

nos cheater plate worked great for me. i liked it. now i have a edelbrock victor 2 stage plate. its neat, but now i have 8 jets to worry about instead of 2. my vote is the tried and true cheater or big shot plates, for simplicity's sake.

edelbrock performer RPM kit is nice and comes with pills up to 250 if you're feeling frothy, that ZEX plate is great for low pill shots for distribution around the outer ring of the plate.

My car on a 150 sniper I picked up new from the swap meet for 100$ hits like a beast, the clutch would not hold it at the track, lol. But I was set to kill mode in the street where the weights of the clutch would catch at high revs. Clutch started slipping after 2 bottles, lol.

What I'm saying is...DO IT. Lol
More addictive than crack and twice the price!

Re: won my first heads up race tonight
MW - your intake is a single plane right? Most any plate will get the job done, especially on the relatively small shot you're looking for. That said, make sure you leave yourself "room to grow", as you will want to hit it harder in the future.
I'd go with a good single bar system like the Edelbrock Steve mentioned, myself I would get a "blackwidow" from IS.

yes, it's a single plane. i might find the limitations of the intake this way though (ls victor jr)

Re: won my first heads up race tonight
I will say Matt, a limited kit such as my sniper max shot is 150, it will simply not let you get any more than that so you cannot get greedy. But you are all forged pistons anyway. I only have friends use progressive for 2 reasons. 1, it hits too hard and lose traction, or 2, they are hitting it with allot of dope!

Since this is for a Friday night street car dot tire class, I'd like it to pour the power on gradually.

yes i can, but track prep isn't always good. having adjustability is always a good thing in my opinion.
i'm hoping to replace my slicks with a set of the new pro 275's i think.

Re: won my first heads up race tonight
looks like whatever i'm going to do will need to take the back seat. i'll get some appropriate tires and try to do this more often, but my wife and i are disagreeing on the power adder situation. we need to figure out what will work best for us and then go forward. this is about us having fun as a couple, and i don't want to do something that will cause stress, lol
Re: won my first heads up race tonight
Boost is self-refilling. Tends to cost more up front, but cheaper over the long run if you use it much.
Nitrous works & isn't any harder on parts than anything else. Anytime you increase HP on a component you are working it that much harder. - I never used to be a nitrous guy, but it gets the job done just fine.

yeah, she wants me to go turbo, i have folks saying stay all motor since i've always been an all motor guy...i don't care, just want to step up.
Re: won my first heads up race tonight
turbo setup will cost at least 3x as much as a comparable output nitrous setup. if you only go to the track once or twice a month, nitrous isn't that bad of a deal. thats why its been so hard for me to get away from it.

You could piece together a turbo setup and have your carb redone for boost. With your welding skills, id say go for it.

That's awesome I love fast, street driven cars. Especially the cars that get driven to the track and driven home
. You don't have nitrous right? Your car would be seriously fast on even a 100 or 150 shot have you ever considered it? I am redoing my top end and trying to decide if I want to keep my kit or sell it...

If you don't spool up the turbo before the launch, it'll come on progressively.
