first time at track
well i finaly made it to the track for the first time this weekend (union Grove) and i def learned my car still needs tuning and i need to learn how to launch a stick lol. my passes were high for the motor i believe but with some practice it should go down. i havent found the sweet spot with the stick yet rather spinning out of the hole or bogging at low rpm. also i was told its a huge factor with tire pressure with my m/t street slicks as i had the pressure at 30 psi and thats a no.my best time was
13.99 at 104 mph with 2.45 60 ft time. also bad reactions times.
even with a little dissapointment with the numbers i had fun being my first car i ever biult and my first pass at a track. it was a good time and i cant wait to go back and start tuning. after talking to a few older guys they said if i cant learn to launch i could get into the low 13's or even high 12's what do you guys think?
thanks guys after this weekend im hooked on third gens and am now in love with going to the track

1.6 rockers
.510 cam(cant rember duration offf the top of my head)
rpm air gap intake.
holley 750 dp
msd ignition
underdrive pulleys
i beleive im at ten to one compression if i did the math right
my own estimate is around 390 hp to the crank
bone stock wc t5 with new flywheel and clutch
rearend has 373's

Re: first time at track
also a little off topic but it is hard to keep it cool at the track without the air flow from the air dam i take a few passes than have to cool it down i think 225 is to hot to run

Re: first time at track
wow 30 psi. you have to drop those a ton. are they the bias ply et streets or the et street radials.
225 is really hot. i try to keep my car between 150-170 degrees and at the most 180.

Re: first time at track
the radials. i was so nervous when i first got there i didnt think about the tire pressure. im going back this sunday and im gonna do some more tuning and hoping to see a nice improvement. ya i know it likes the heat it will idle at 180 cruze at 180 to 190 but when i constanly get on it it gets up there and takes its time coming down. i believe its a timing issue. any other ideas?

Re: first time at track
i am ditching the radials. best 60 i got was a 1.808 but they are really not consistent on manual cars. m/t recommends a bias ply tire so it will recover fast. they say the radials work best on an auto car. stick cars shock the heck out of the tires. that said i dump the clutch around 5-5500 rpm so. im going to full slicks and may pick up a set of quicktime pro dot tires for dot racing.
the best psi i have found after 63 passes on them is about 15-16 cold pressure.
on the temp deal. i always try to be 150 to 160 after burn out. by the end of the strip im up around 185 190. it will normally cool down by the next round. but if i try to run within like 20 minutes it will be at 180 and go to about 195-200 after the run. i loose about a tenth or so if i try to run it at 180 after the burnout.

Re: first time at track
little late to bring this back lol but i went back to the track in the last week. of november and my new best time was 13.6 @ 103 with psi set at 17 psi. i am currently fighting a bog of the line and going into third im debating if i need a new carb and the 750 dp is to much. still happy to improve though going to the track is such a rush i love it. im hoping after i get the tuning taking care of and learn to properly launch (2.0 best 60 ft time with stock susp.) i can break into the high 12's but i shall see next year. any advice or ideas would be awsome thanks guys

Re: first time at track
Welcome back...lol
Id suggest a smaller carb..like a 650
Also...the stick will take a few laps to get down shifting etc...but make sure you keep the motor cool.
I leave the starting line every time at 160* to be consistent and @ 170* the 60' slows a bit. Keep temp in mind for any small cube motor.
And i agree..this whole racing thing is the most fun thing ever!!

Re: first time at track
ya i totally noticed a difference with the temp. if the motor was over 200 it would bog harder but if i hit the line at 170 or so it wasnt as bad. my buddy has a 600 edelbrock do you think i should give it a try or is it to small? i just ordered a wideband so hopefully i can get it close. i know im idling rich but i think it is leaning out at wot. some times when i hammer the gas it spits but if i let up and smack it again it takes off any ideas?? also it has been popping threw the carb lately?? any help would be awsome

Re: first time at track
What is the timing set at? Sounds like it needs some accelerator pump circuit tuning and tweaking. What size squirters are you using? Pump cams?
