2018 Drag week

Any members attending drag week this year? I'll be following along while at work as much as I can during the day. Hot Rod should be posting live links of each days events which you can also watch later if you miss anything.

Should be an interesting week with a Tropical storm/hurricane approaching. Depending on the path, it might hit Alabama or the Carolinas by Thursday.

If all goes well Im going to go by ZMAX on Wednesday.

For someone that has never been, is there anything that I need to know? Anything I shouldn't miss or that I should make sure I go do/see?

Re: 2018 Drag week

Just finished watching what I couldn't watch during the day. Good and bad I guess. Only 1 vehicle had carnage, at least what was visible, when a gasser exploded a 9" diff on the starting line.

Racing was shut down early when heavy rain hit the track but all is not lost. As per the Hotrod web site.

After the fast classes were wrapped up the track opened up to Street Machine Eliminator but due to the rain delay, most of the field wasn’t able to run. That means the drivers racing in that class will only be scored over four days (Tuesday to Friday).
Sounds fair enough except with a hurricane expected to hit land by Thursday, I'm wondering if the event will even finish.

Re: 2018 Drag week

Drag week 2016 was in my area in 2016, but my car wasn't ready. I wanted to go this year, but I don't have a roll bar yet. Considering the weather, I'm glad that I didn't go. Maybe next year. Good luck and safety to all who are there!

Re: 2018 Drag week

I was at Darlington today. I counted six third gen cars. An amazing varity of race cars, alot of which were incredibly deceptively fast! Had a lot of fun and was able to make it back to Lexinton even though the coastal areas were being evacuacted. The picture of the white Formula 350 I'm pretty sure is Chvywolf but after he ran I could not find him in the pits. What a blast, wish I was off all week to follow the group.

Re: 2018 Drag week

This is the best photo so far from drag week. 6 second camaro that ran 6.674 at 219.83 today but it's going down the highway in torential rain pulling a trailer.

Results are in after 2 days of racing. Total of 47 vehicles have been eliminated. 4 of them from the unlimited class including the 57 chev wagon with a top alcohol engine under the hood. There's a real cool video about how they were going to make it down the highway. Remove the blower belt and throttle linkage then take off the blower burst plate and mount a throttle body in it's place then drive down the highway on E85. They couldn't get ready in time for the first round so they were eliminated but still made 1 partial pass down the track yesterday.

That blue Corvette in the above pictures is a nitrous car from Toronto. He won the unlimited class last year.

Re: 2018 Drag week

Day 3 results are available. 5 or 16 cars from Unlimited are now out. Total of 62 cars are now out of competition.

I was listening to the track announcer today. When entry applications are made available, there are 400 spots open. The 400 spots filled up in 7 minutes. If you don't get into one of those spots, you get put on a waiting list in case someone can't make it to the event.

Quickest third gen I can find in the results is a 1984 Camaro running in Street Machine Eliminator. Running an average of 10.866

Re: 2018 Drag week

Day 4 results are in. 6 cars in unlimited are now eliminated. That's really good compared to last year going into day 5. 78 of 400 are now out of competition.

Re: 2018 Drag week

Day 5 action

A lot of cars didn't make it through the week but this is 9 hours of video to watch. I'll spend the weekend watching all of Day 5. All the class cars trying to get as low an average as possible including the unlimited class. All the stick shift cars then competed in their own race. Also the top 32 in Street Machine Eliminator get their own bracket race.

Over their 4 day average (monday got shut down because of rain) they tried to get as low an ET as possible. From their average ET, a tenth of a second is subtracted and that's their dial in for every round. Even then, some cars still broke out. Those 32 quickest cars are running from 10.0 to 10.7 on a 4 day average.

I did manage to see one of the fast class cars make a pass today. Looking at results, it must be StreetRace Small Block Performance Adder class. They don't have a funny car cage so the class is restricted to running 8.50. They can't hand in a timeslip quicker than 8.50 and are trying to get a 5 day average as close to 8.50 as possible. This one car was probably done and handed in his timeslip but went for an all out final pass of dragweek and ran a 7.7 so you can imagine how much he had to slow the car down all week to stay slower than 8.50.

During some downtime, the track announcer had some interesting things to say. When registration was open back in March, 400 available slots filled up to 7 minutes. Those who don't get registered get on a waiting list. That list was an additional 400 cars. When the cars show up to the track on day 1, roughly 60-80 that got registered don't make it. Anyone who was on the waiting list or just managed to show up, can then get entered and day 1 racing may not have a full 400 cars competing.

Just waiting now for the final results to be posted.
