Looking for a few ideas

Hola Crew.

Being a F-body newbie, here is the scoop. My 86 Sport Coupe (hey that rhymes) needs some work on her to get her to backup my name. Currently I have upgrade my 305 LG4 to a 350 carb'd, she is an auto and I am keeping her that way. I have put some KYB shocks/struts on her and installing a Hurst Quarter Stick soon. I know what I am doing outside to her but really need some advice on what could/should be done to her insides. Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks in advance, hoping to get her all done up nice and drop in on the 4th.

What kind of rear gears you got in it? That is a cheap/quick way to get some more seat of the pants horsepower. A higher stall torque convertor, and a shift kit could help also. Oh, and of course headers/exhaust if your running stock stuff still. Hope that helps!

What kind of Hp are you after or better yet what kind of 1/4 mile times do you want to run?

Need more info.... What's your price limit? What's on your 350 right now? (heads, cam, carb, compression, etc.) What rear gears do you have? You willing to change them? Any custom work done on your tranny? Is the suspension stock except for the shocks?

Pretty much bone stock on the exhaust, suspension, engine with the exception of a new cam when upgraded (need to find what it is, forgot). No 1/4 times or HP readings as of yet (still tinkering). Changing rear gears, heads, torque convertor are good ideas, any suggestions? Trying to keep her my daily, but gas really isn't an issue, emmission are thou Cash wise I usually have about 2000-2500 to play around with a month.

What kind of intake/carb are you running? I have a 350 in my 86 SC and I have an Edlebrock Performer intake and Edlebrock 600 CFM carb and I can't get an air cleaner on my carb with the stock hood. But I just bought a cowl hood yesterday 5 inches. Pretty big though. But I can fit anything under it now. The rest of the stuff I have is in my sig. I took it to the track a couple of weeks ago and ran a 14.86. I know I can get it lower with a few more simple mods. Just changing the hood cut off about 30-40 lbs.

cool for about 5 minutes, now I'm sick of it)

:: smacks brad cause he needs a hood more than brad, lmao ::

I've got a performer RPM intake manifold and an edelbrock 1407 (750) cfm carb on mine... I can't really do too big of an air cleaner either

course, the crappy one i had before was tiny and barely fit ...

But atleast the stock hood was fiberglass hehe

$2500 isn't a real healthy budget so I need to know how to distribute the funds. How do you rate cornering against straight line drag? Top speed vs. 0-70 mph punch? Basically, tell me exactly how you want to use this car and then we can move forward one step at a time. Perhaps relate your final performance level relative to a car you want to equal or beat.

It starts with defining your current baseline (basically, establishing what you have right now), knowing what your goals are, identifying your means to reach that goal, adjusting goals as necessary, making a plan, executing the plan, and then tuning the final combo for everything she's worth.

2,500 a month isn't a healthy budget?? Man, I wish I had that much money to spend on my car!
But, yeah, what exactly do you want as Qwk said, until then we can't really decide what you should get.

Demon, it's a 5" cowl hood. Needs a lot of work though.

Yup, being a contractor tends to throw money my way Ok, I am looking for my 0-70 punch, plus excellent handling. I drive her most of the time in our loveable Seattle traffic and up in Richmond BC, all you BC'rs now that area Currently I have had the following done or in the works this Friday. 350 upgrade due to blown head gasket (lovely no?), new KYB shocks to replace the faulty stock ones. Got a great tires deal from my mechanice Firehawk SZ50 EP to use on my 15"'s before I upgrade to 16x8 in the front and 16x9 or 9.5 in the back. Installing a Quarter stick tomorrow and getting my trans checked plus I need some new rear brakes which are being done then as well. I admit I am not a car guru but most willing to learn and hopefully not blow it up in the process. Rear gears sound like an idea, plus some under hood "goodies". As for cars I am most looking to blow any nitrous'd hondas and them evil mustangs out of the water and milegage is not big on my mind but I don't want to idle in the parking lot and go down a half tank

Hold off on all your repairs! You're going to duplicate efforts by having to go through it again. You need some basic upgrades which will effect your rearend assembly and tranny.

First of all, you're going to have to dump the rearend you have right now. It's weak and useless. At minimum you need a Borg Warner 9-bolt from a later IROC. These all come with disk brakes so that will resolve your brake repair issue. If you want to push 400 Hp and beyond you would be wise to go beyond the 9-bolt. I happen to have a 9-bolt rearend 100% complete with disks that has only 55K original miles on it.

The other thing you should think about is if you need tranny work done you might as well have it built up right now. You need it custom build with kevlar clutches, B&M sprag, drum, custom governor, valve body, and maybe some other heavy duty pieces. This is essential to having a quick car. You also want a custom torque converter. This will really assist you in getting agressive launches. In order to do it right you're going to need to know what kind of power band your engine will have. So don't do the tranny until you figure this out. Also, I know a guy who will do it for dirt cheap. Believe me, he knows his trannys!

Don't do really wide 16-inch rims. There's no decent tires out there for them. You either want 15-inch rims for the selection of awesome drag tires, 16x8 rims for cheap performance tires, or 17x9 to 9.5 rims for the best cornering. If you're going to make this a sleeper we need function over form.

Regardless of whether you're cornering or drag racing you will need upgraded rear control arms, panhard rod, torque arm and subframe connectors. Considering your budget you should get fully adjustable components from Kenny Brown or Spohn Performance. I have the Kenny Brown competition suspension setup.

If you want to corner and have a quick street start with good pull up to about 80 mph then the best choice for you is a naturally aspirated small block putting out 400 Hp or a little more with emphasis on creating a ton of torque. This will mean you're looking for a stroker 383 or a 406. We're also going to have to focus heavily on your suspension so you can get a killer launch. A good launching car will shut down almost anything because you've already put the guy in your mirror from the get-go. Playing catch up is demoralizing and hard to do. Most people will just give up.

If you give me an e-mail at littleborgy@yahoo.com we can talk about the project as a whole and some ideas for engine combos. I have also seen some pretty good deals out there for you to look at.
