Loud is not cool
Okay, everyone knows my car lost its muffler and tips, right? "My cat-back was done by RMN , or Rust and Mother Nature!" My wife and I drove around Saturday in it, A/C on full blast, and she got a big ole' headache from it. The driver's seat is definitly louder than the passenger one, and I find keeping the windows open helps with the noise a bit - you get other sound in as opposed to just the low bass tones from the exhaust. Acceleration is really loud, with it being almost unbearable (Almost
) at around 2500 RPM.
We agreed to get the Edelbrock set-up and a Catco convertor from Summit, ater we do the wife's front brakes on her GP. Shawn, I might not be able to do the interior thing for a bit, this takes priority over the beater - unless I can get that headlight to work, then I can side-line the GTA and drive the beater around.
It's a lot of fun with three cars, that's for sure. Maybe when I get my cat-back in the mail, a few of us could get together and turn wrenches, give some of the other guys a chance to meet up or whatnot.
I'll keep you guys informed.

Sounds like fun!!!
Loud sounds good, as long as it comes from the back of the car.
So when are you going to get it fixed.

After I do a brake job my my wife's car, I'll go ahead and order the stuff from Summit, then it's just a matter of waiting for some boxes to arrive with my name on them. It may be soemtime next month, July at the latest.

Ooohhh, it's a tempting offer - I'll just have to come up with piping and tips - I junked the WHOLE thing into the scrap bin! I'll mention it to the wife. Is it dual tip or those silly single tip mufflers?
Its a single tip. I have no idea what it sounds like. When I bought my Y-pipe the guy insisted I also include the muffler ( I guess he didnt want it anymore?). He told me it was a stock replacement flowmaster and thats about all I know about it. I can get the model/serial numbers if you want.

Well, a single tip Flowmaster is way more legal than no muffler at all... The wife sounded pleased at that deal, so we'll have to link up about it - now just to find a way to mate it to the rusted pipe I still got...

Cut it off clean, then get some new piping and clamp it all together. If it's leaking too much, borrow a welder!
Too bad you didn't hang onto the old muffler-back pipes, if only to see the bends and such. Still won't be much trouble eye-balling it, though.
Is the rest of your exhaust rusted also? If it's more than surface rust, you should think about replacing the whole deal. It'll sound better, look better, free up a little more power, and get a bit better gas mileage all at the same time. Tell the wife that last part!

Sounds cool, Shawn, I'll figure out how to toss that onto the car, and after I get around ot ordering the Edelbrock set-up (and receive it) I'll stick the Flow onto the Firebird...!
The piping doesn't look too bad, it was just at the weld=point that the rust got deeper than the surface and totally rusted through the pipe. Even the convertor doesn't look too bad, but that's going to be replaced with a Catco aftermarket unit. I may need to cut off a bit of the old pipe and get some new piping jus so the Flowmaster will have somethign good to mate up with, but I'll need a BENT section of pipe - all I have back there now is the part that bends over the axle and turns to the driver's side of the car.
Funny thing about all of this is: I'm still not as loud as some other cars, especially some r!cers...

You can buy generic bends for pipes, or you can have pipes bent to your specs. Any exhaust shop will be able to do it for you. Maybe a hardware store?
As long as you have the dimensions and the bend points/angles, it shouldn't be a problem to get it without throwin' your car on a lift. Take a look at the way it is in your firebird, that might help. Although, I don't know how different they are.
Having that cat helps keep you quieter. Hey, try stuffing crumpled screening through the "tail" pipe and see if that quiets it down. Actually, that could melt... stuff something else in there. Or go get an exhasut whistle! One-up those ricers at sounding loud and stupid!

Ha, I could always use this chance to stick a cut-out somewhere, but the pipes are getting replaced eventually anyhow... I'll go get one of those turbo-simpulator kits and shove THAT in the pipe... :lala:

My bad, a Turbo Simulator. They spool up when exhaust gas hits them and make it sound like you have a turbo installed.

Thye're ghetto. Wannabe-posing-loser trash that ranks right up there with mega-phat body kits, hacked springs and stickers for parts that were never BOUGHT, let alone installed in the car. (although I like the Edelbrock stickers that came with the cataloge, I stuck them all over my roll-around toolcart at work)
I've heard that movie studios use them for their cars that they intend to wreck, hack or otherwise smash - who wants to actually destroy a REAL turbo-powered car? Buy a base-model, stick some trim on it to make it look like the top-model and BLAMMO, blow it to bits.

If I'm not mistaken, I think they sell something like that for the intake side too. lol! Same theory, it spools up the air going through the intake tubing then purges it out to get the turbo sound. Man o man the elcheapo turbo simulators that they come out with. Still might be cool to hear one though

They also maek an electronic one, it plugs into SOMEWHERE in your car, I'm guessing the RPM signal so it knows wht the engine is doing, and it does boht the spool-up sound and the blow-off valve sound. You can also disable it from in the car via a switch and even adjust to volume with a dial. The ultimate lowlife-posing-loser mod, if there ever was one. Around 100 for it, I think, but that was off Ebay.

I have my fog machine in my truck to make it look like I can smoke out the tires! (Or go Cheech and Chong style...) I still need a high temp hose to route it out of the cab if I want it in my firebird, but the truck has "vent holes" aka WICKED RUST so it doesn't need it.
If I route the hose out on the drivers side tire, I won't actually need positraction, hehe. Yep, guess I'm a poser-wannabe!

Ha, I heard you can do that, but squirt bleach on your tires when doing a burn-out, the stuff will (supposedly) smoke like crazy. Wire in a windshield squirter onto the inner fender and aim it at the tires. Hit your Secret Smoke-A-Lot button (TM) and watch the crowd go nutz.

I'm wondering if it does nasty stuff to tires, besides clean them.
