Tinting
Tinting
Anyone know a good place to buy 3M tint?
I'll probably keep it at 35% unless I can find something in the 20~25% range. Just light enough so I won't be bothered.
What kind of tint do you guys have?

I use to run 20% on the rear hatch & 35% on the doors. I never had a problem with cops with that. But then again, it was a kind of long time ago lol. I can't remember the name of it, but I had that really reflective tint.

I have 35 all arround. I got it done at solar-pro for $100.00 so its not dark enough for me, but... gotta follow the rules. Just as long as they dont do a visual check on the exhaust, I should be good to go. Now if I could only get my damn car to work. It is some kinda electrical problem.

When I got the GTA safety checked, they askd about the tint on teh door windows. Then they stuck this wierd looking black box on both sides and I guess measured the light that could pass through the tint. No problems, I passed okay. Almsot failed becasue my license plate light was burned out.
Funny, they idn't catch my CHMSL was missing a bulb. Still can't find a replacement in Checkers (Waipahu), and their lightbulb index book went AWOL not long ago. I'll try the Millilani Checkers sometime, they seem to have their act together more.

A couple of the cops I spoke with said something like, "Yeah I don't think there are restrictions for a hatch or tailgate."
Think it's safe to go 5% on the rear?
Keola, you know some active cops, right? Do they have that little book that is supposed to have all the specifics?
Thanks,
Scott

the tint rules are kinda stupid. Here is what I remember back when I had my license. All passenger vehicles have to be 35% + or - 6% (which means you can have as low as 29%). Only Trucks, Vans, & SUV's can have fully blacked out on anything besides the 2 front door windows. Those still have to be 35% + or - 6%. So yes, the rear hatch still has to be within those limits since it is a passenger vehicle. Even wagons fell under passenger vehicles so you can't black out the back windows like an SUV. What the heck is up with that yeah???????? But then again, this was all back about 5 yrs. so I don't know what the rules are now. My wife has her license now but she says it's all still the same. The rules don't seem to be in concrete & depending what mood & who you talk to at the DMV under the freeway(the safety check gods) the rules seem to be always different. So it's no wonder why the cops don't even have a solid grasp on all the rules either. Just my 2 cents

I'm kind of wondering what good the Recon and Safety program is when someone can just scrape the sticker off my car or simply never bother getting recon EVER, becasue they know their uncle's cousin's friend down the street (who's a flamer, by the way) who can hook them up with a safety sticker and paperwork for a case of beer and a small tip. WHAT THE HELL, OVER? Either fix the program, or get rid of it totally. I'll play by the rules for now, but I hope the rules change - I've seen a recon sticker TWICE in eight years here, and about a zillion times the vehicle needed one.
Yeah 35% is the legal limit. If you want to run 5% and not have to scrape it once a year then you need a safety hookup. Or you can make buddy buddy with the tint guy and work up a deal to scrape it, and re-apply one day later (after you get safety) for a somewhat cheap price. If its already cut for your windows its really no big deal to re-apply.
And all I gotta say about recon is keep going back. Eventually you'll come across the guy who lets stuff slide. Recon is a joke to me because the rules always change every time you go (depending on who inspects you and how they happen to feel at that moment).

Hmm not too sure about if they have the book on them at all times... I'll check that n get back to you.
I'm pretty sure that if they choose to press you on it, and you fight back, they'll be sure to find something else wrong with your car. For example, if you do get nailed for tint, and tell the cop off saying that it wasnt X dark, and that it was legal, the cop will say alright, but your sound system's disturbing the peace, or something of that matter.

Yeah, in like, twenety years... By then they'll be worth a lot of money, too. BUy them now, while they're cheap...! (And make sure you have a place to put them, or you'll end up like me and get one or two towed.
