HRP will be closing mid 2006 ...

I've heard tracks will be closing mid 2006 unless we can do something about it. What are your guys thoughts? I have mixed feelings on this. I like having a track, but in my honest opinion, our track sucks. The facilities are not very good (bathroom, food, stands), the 1/4 mile goes a little bit uphill, and the shortcourse surface is really beat up and, well, short hahaha. On the other hand, racing on what we got is better than having nothing and racing illegally. So I'm not sure what I'm gonna be doing. I'll probably use it till it closes, then take a break from racing maybe get into shows untill I figgure out whats going on. Good news is the interisland ferry will be running soon after, so trips to the outerisland tracks would be possible ($100 each way ouch, racing will be an expensive hobby). I wish we could have a new track, but I honestly dont think it will happen. And I'm not looking forward to driving on the streets after the current track closes. I know a bunch of people will be taking it to the streets. Kinda sucks when you're going 55 and someone just misses you going 100+. Its happened to me a few times already and the track isnt even gone yet geeze! Maybe the upside will be all the fatalities that are sure to happen will convince the state that they need to fund a racing facility. Never know right?

I read about the track closing also & think it really sucks! Like you said, a bad track is better than no track.
FWIW, there is suppose to be a cruise down to the Capitol, I think, on the Holiday, Feb. 21. I think nobody will care down there & I'm not sure if I'm gonna go. It's probably gonna take more fatalities than usual for the State to get a clue.
Just as an added tid bit fact, we use to have a governor that believed in the track. Governor Waihee was a supporter! Too bad we don't have anyone now that gives a rip about Oahu having an organized Motorway Park for LEGAL racing in every form.

The state is forcing them to close with taxes and crap, as I understand it. There is some cruise to the capitol but I don't think it'll do anything GOOD for the cause.

I really wanted to start autocrossing this summer... I guess I better get out and enjoy it while I can.

I'll ask around to see what else I can find.

hmm itll be a sad day when HRP closes its gates permanently.... Hopefully the State will turn around, and either cut the taxes, or fund another motorsports complex.. which i doubt, given the uncertainty of our States budget, not to mention the national deficit as well (7 trillion dollars..). I just hope this wont make the streets more dangerous than they already are.

Hmm this reminds me, I have yet to go clock the new car hehe... wonder what it will run..?

From what I hear, the possibility of a new track opening will probably require a private owner.

I'll find out more this week.

I talked to some of my co-workers today, both actively race on that track, one of them (Dave Coburn, Anthony knows him) said that the land was sold, and that the track is in Escrow or somethign like that. Legal-ese to me, but basically, the new owners of the Industrial Park don't want a track, so they ain't allowign the track to renew their lease. Something like that. 200M has been raised for a projected 350M track, but stuff gets in the way, not enough money, and the State said that their priorities were the Movie Industry, the Tourism Industry and something else I can't remember.

Say bye-bye to the thirty-odd performance shops in the State, as the business they will lose from the track going bye-bye will probably force many to close their doors or simply move elsewhere. Either way, less stores that cater to us, besides finding OEM stuff at Checker and Napa... Great, more shipping charges from Summit. Perfect. I might as well not even bother with my 383 build on the GTA, for this reason alone. If I can't test it out, why even bother doing it?

All is not lost, though. We already have four great tracks on Island, as someone has alluded to - H1, H2, H3 and Kam Highway. These prime racing surfaces feature long straights for top-speed racing, challenging pothole areas for those looking for more autocross action and sections feature winding turns for those into the road-course thing. All paid for by the State!

The "contact" I had that works at the track is gone- and before I had a chance to find out more.

Some of my classmates have said the track is supposed to be shut down by the end of this year. That's just one rumor.

Whenever their lease is up is when they're gone....

My "contact" said April, next year. Could be sooner, though

If the tracks on Maui and Big Island are smart, they will get together with the planned interisland ferry and make package deals for racers. If the price was right, people could still race.

I also hope that they go ahead with the ferry plan! I wouldn't mind trying out the other tracks! I know Big Island's track is awesome & have just heard that Kauai has an awesome track too!
