4th gen fuel tank, how about fuel lines?
So I was reading up on using the fuel tank from a 4th gen and I think I'm pretty squared away on that. My question is, can I use the fuel lines as well? Maybe bend them to fit my car or make custom brackets.. Has anyone tried this? I think it would do away with the need for custom fuel lines and a fuel pressure regulator. I really don't mind a little custom fab work if its cheaper and easier, plus having as much LS1 parts on my car as I possibly can. Thoughts?

Re: 4th gen fuel tank, how about fuel lines?
Its been done. The lines wont fit 100%. From the tank to the front subframe they fit pretty well. Might have to tweak them a little. Also...no need for custom brackets. The line will snap right into the factory holders. The "regulator" is taken care of back by the fuel filter which all fits into the stock location.
When you get to the front subframe of the 3rdgen, you'll see that the 4th gen lines have a lot of extra bends and length. I chose to chop that out, and join the front part of the line to the rear part with stainless steel swagelock fittings. No leaks, no issues for years. It also allowed me to connect the fuel rail to the line in the same way as the 4th gen.
Having said all of that...the first chance I get, Im replacing everything from the fuel filter foward with braided stainless, and snaking it away from the headers.
If you do what I did...do NOT cheap out on the compression fitting. Get something good and it'll work fine. I chose swagelok, and I used the strongest thread locker I could get on the caps..probably overkil but its not vibing loose.

Thanks for the information there, just trying to get my research down and know exactly what I'm doing before I order a bunch of parts.
So technically speaking I could use the 4th gen lines to the fuel filter, which takes care of the regulator. Then come off the fuel filter with steel braided fuel line up to the fuel rail correct?
Another thing, on the LS motors the fuel line is held to the rail by a quick disconnect. Is there an adapter fitting that snaps on the fuel rail like factory with an AN fitting on the back side? Trying to think how that all connects. If so I'll order everything from Summit Racing and go that route.
And on LS1's, I've owned several LS1 cars but never really paid close attention to the fuel system. Don't they use a return line back to the tank? Thats not under pressure is it? Just thinking I could do the same with it to make things easier.
And the third line is just a evap line that goes no where correct?
And last, from what I've read and just to make sure I'm tracking with the LS1 fuel tank. It'll fit but I have to trim the fill tube down to the same length as the third gen tank. Now, is the wiring connector the same? Meaning my third gen harness will connect to the fuel pump without modification?
I've tried searching for a thread on the sending unit as well but can't find an exact answer, I've read the 4th gen sender will throw my gage off on my 91. Is there a quick fix to that?
Thanks, sorry for all the questions... I'm reading everything I run across. Just like to know all the details before I go spending money. I have to be tactful budget wise.... Thanks again for the help!

Re: 4th gen fuel tank, how about fuel lines?
i think ghetto and i are one of the few to use them, i ran the factory lines right off the tank, (plastic tank with all lines and wiring, even the plug right into the car for wiring) eliminated the evap line that runs to the TB and just let the plastic evap line tucked up by the tank uncapped (capped the line on the TB/intake), the one line runs factory to where the frame rail is where i cut it and used compression fittings to run a straight line up the tunnel, under the MC and to a piece of the orginal 4th gen line with factory fuel connection to rail. easy easy. The wiring i ran the 4th gen harness and bulkhead right into the sheet metal (cut open a template of the shape over the old hole and bolted it in, then i weeded out the 4 wires needed for to splice into the 3rd gen body wiring, wrapped it up and it looks factory.

And one other thing, when your talking about compression fittings.. these are the brass compression fittings used in air lines? Just making sure I'm tracking on that too...

Re: 4th gen fuel tank, how about fuel lines?
And what size are the 4th gen plastic fuel lines? Are they 3/8 or 5/16 nylon tubing? Just sitting here that does sound like an easy fix to the fuel line issue if it'll work.. using the 4th gen lines as far as I can route them, then use a straight piece of nylon tubing past the subframe, then reconnect the 4th gen lines before the rail...
And threadlocking the crap out of the connections... Looks like as long as they are tight and secured it would be ok... Granted there are better ways of doing things, just thinking budget wise for the time being.

Heres a pic of the nylon tubing, now... using these type of fittings?

this is the type of compression fittings i used for stainless lines, easy to use, should have no issues with the PSI the fuel system will run through them.

Re: 4th gen fuel tank, how about fuel lines?
i believe the main feed line is 3/8 but take a piece you cut out of the bends to the parts store just to make sure, also i woouldnt be using any nylon in any of the fuel line system (besides the factory plastic lines already on the tank, i understand the need to save money and budgets, trust me, i hit $6K on my "budget friendly" build haha what a joke, but fuel systems shouldnt be contrained by $, especially the lines, use metal/stainless lines. The compression fittings are a simple part most parts stores carry like AZ or advance, just ask.
Yeah that makes sense, I definately don't want to cut any corners on this swap. I guess the best thing for me to do, since I already have TPI fuel lines and a TPI tank, would be to use the Hawks fuel line kit. Then look at this later on and maybe do a 4th gen tank upgrade with stainless lines.
Amazing how these little parts add up when you start buying things! But knowing me, I like having the best of the best and thats hard to do on a budget.
Good thing I'm divorced, chose the car over a cheating wife, lol, so I can do what I need to do.
Thanks for the help, there's some darn good information and Knowledge on this site!

Trying to think how that all connects. If so I'll order everything from Summit Racing and go that route. Yes there are fittings that will do what you need. Russel makes them, as well as a couple others. You can order them from Summit or JEGs or plenty of other sources.
Thats what Im running. I built a custom braided stainless line to replace the nylon factory LS1 fuel line in the engine bay. Wasnt necessary, but I had the parts so...
And on LS1's, I've owned several LS1 cars but never really paid close attention to the fuel system. Don't they use a return line back to the tank? Thats not under pressure is it? Just thinking I could do the same with it to make things easier. There is only ONE fuel line from the rear of the car up to the motor on an LS1. There is a return of sorts...but it takes place back at the fuel filter. The other line that runs up front is the EVAP line, but no one has figured out how to even make the EVAP system from the LS1 work...unless you are doing a full dash swap that is. So...just do like 88 said and leave it unhooked at the tank. I never saw any issues doing it this way.
You will need to trim the filler hose..correct. Take it from me, and dont try to match the length up to the thirdgen tank. Get the tank and filler neck mounted, and then trim the fill tube accordingly. Go a little at a time...because if you go too short, you'll need to buy a new one. Radiator hose will not work here...
For wiring...I did what 88 mentioned. I used the bulkhead connector from the LS1 donor car, and just installed it in place of the original body connector. Looks 100% factory and works just as well.
I've tried searching for a thread on the sending unit as well but can't find an exact answer, I've read the 4th gen sender will throw my gage off on my 91. Is there a quick fix to that? There is info on this in the stickies, and other threads.. TONS of info. The easiest fix...get a programmable fuel gauge. There are ways to modify the tank sender though if you wish to keep your factory gauges.

At this point...its all here. Also LS1tech is a good source for swap info if you havent checked out their forum.

Re: 4th gen fuel tank, how about fuel lines?
1) I have a 92 TBI
2) 1999 v6 plastic tank
3) have all plastic lines leaving the sending unit
?: where to buy the "T" bracket ?
?: Do i order the ls1 fuel sending unit from hawksthirdgen?
?: Will i have to remove the regulator off the ls1 sending unit?
?: Could i just change the pump to get more pressure and keep the stock sending unit, or does the pump not separate?
?: What about the an line? how do I know which ones or sizes to get, or how the connector pieces fit?
Please let me know or give me a number where i could call you and hear word for word instruction.

Re: 4th gen fuel tank, how about fuel lines?
If you have a V6 tank/fuel bucket, it does not have an internal regulator.
You need to find a V8 fuel bucket/rear fuel lines. This will give you the ability to regulate the pressure at the rear. The actual V6/V8 tanks are the same.
Otherwise, you can use what you have & try to adapt a 99-02 Vette fuel filter/regulator where the factory filter was.
Either way, you have some fabrication to do.
Start doing some internet searches, you will find everything you need.

I thought the tbi had a fuel pressure regulator?
I've done plenty of searches, non really answer my question, I keep getting different information, some people say it will work, some say change the sending unit, idk what to do.
