Compatible Tranny?

hey I have a 83 camaro sport 2.8L 5-speed, the thing is that the engine is still good with only 63k miles on it and I feel it gives it value being an original engine. I just wanted to know, what types of trannys would fit on my 2.8L?...my bell housing cracked on my T5 and some friends told me that T5's have a reputation for cracking. Or are there other chevy vehicles that have a bell housing that'll fit?

Re: Compatible Tranny?

The bellhousing is unique to the thirdgen due to the tilted transmission to bell bolt pattern.
However, 1983 was still mechanical linkage and first year of the T5 so it's a one-year only bell. You might want to determine why it cracked and get it welded.

T5s don't have a reputation for cracking except with high-torque / abusive driving where the torque arm mount cracks the tailhousing.

I usually don't let a "reputation" from "friends who told me" lead me to find a tranny that "would fit" if the transmission is still in operating condition. 2.8 V6 T5 combinations are capable of a lot more miles than 63k so ask your friends how "much they're gonna help" you chase a transmission that "would fit" based on the "reputation" they "told you" about and I'll guess it's about twice as much times -1 as the welding repair of your bellhousing will cost you.

Due to the common failure / wear of the mechanical linkage and less than easy availability of the 83 bellhousing, a very viable option for you is to get the bellhousing, fork hydraulic linkage and pedals from an 84-92 2.8 / 3.1 F-body. Those are going to be available in junkyards and bolt right in other than a couple holes in the firewall.

S10 bellhousings were cable those early years (no, there are no pedals to do cable release in your car) and their bellhousings lack the tilted trans. bolt pattern.
