Pre-Supercharger questions
I am debating whether or not to do a Supercharger for my car. If I do, I would like to put it on with the current motor and enjoy it for awhile. And in the meantime I will be working on building a new motor.
Anyway, I am looking for input on what to do before getting the supercharger and which ProCharger would do best for what I am looking at.
The car is a 1991 Camaro Z28 with the TPI 305 and 5 speed manual. The motor is all original and has about 165,000 miles on it. I just replaced the original clutch with a new SPEC Stage II clutch and new 3.42 gears and the Torsen take out carrier from SLP will be going in soon. The car currently has March Underdrive pulleys, FastChips chip, cold air intake, TPIS TB air foil, and Borla cat back. And that is about it. It ran a best of 14.7 @ 97mph last year without the pulleys and TB air foil, and with the original, slipping clutch and 3.08 gears.
So the motor seems to be fairly healthy, but does blow a little smoke at start up (valve seals, I am assuming). And the new motor I am planning would be "SuperCharger ready". Planning a 8.5:1 compression 383 with forged lower end, AFR 190 heads, TPIS MiniRam II intake, and CompCams cam.
I am trying to decide on which ATI to go with: either the P-1SC upgraded with the 3 row intercooler, or just go with the D-1SC and run lower boost on the current motor. I would like to run upwards of 15 lbs of boost on the new motor.
So, questions are:
1) What to do on the current motor to help get it ready for a supercharger (will get rid of the FastChips chip and, I assume, the Underdrive Pulleys)?
2) Which ATI supercharger?
I know this was long and thanks for reading it.

i had to make that same decision about 1-1/2 years ago, i decided on the D1sc, because if i decided to up the boost, the blower is better suited than the P1sc, and yes your fast chips and underdrive pulley's will become paper weights, along with your CAI.
The chip most likely has too much timing advance built into it, the march underdrive pulleys, could be used, but i wll take alot of work and some re-engineering of the crank pulley spacer provided by ATI to get everything thing to line up, i attempted to retain my underdrive pulley's but in the end i installed the OEM pulley's.
Most everyone i have talked with is pleased with the performance of their D1sc, including myself.
hope this helps with your decision.

WIth 165k on it, I would be VERY weary of putting on ANY type of power adder... Chances are youll open up a whole new slew of problems, possible blow by, spinning bearings, throwing rods, etc. And any hint of detonation will kill her for sure.

I am a liitle confused on How the Underdrive pullies would cause a problem. I am still trying to pick up on all the info for a supercharger so I am not the best at them. Could some one explain this to me?
first, the spacer for the blower crank pulley will not fit inside the underdrive crank pulley, then once you get past that hurdle, then your alignment of the blower crank pulley to the blower head unit pulley will be off, due to the thickness of the aluminum underdrive crank pulley. understand now? (not being a smartass, just want to make sure)
