Willie's Twin Intercooler Vs. 3 core

I am searching for any information on using a 3core ATI Intercooler w/ a Vortech S/C. Although Willie's kit is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING looking, I feel that it will not be beneficial to me for 4 reasons: a) cost. b) I don't have a/c and do not experience cooling problems. (also, i don't live in the desert) c) ease of instalation d) weight savings.
Don't get me wrong, it is a awesome looking kit, but I just don't think I need it. Anyway, does anyone have any pics, part #'s, layouts or prices for setting up a Vortech w/ a ATI intercooler? How is the tubing run? What is the part # of the Intercooler? How much is it? Will it fit my GTA w/ twin electric fans? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Re: Willie's Twin Intercooler Vs. 3 core

Although Willie's kit is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING looking, I feel that it will not be beneficial to me for 4 reasons:

a) cost.

Let me address this later.

b) I don't have a/c and do not experience cooling problems. (also, i don't live in the desert)

Very critical in selecting an intercooler setup. I agree with you. The twin hi-flow system allows the engine to run markedly cooler. ONLY if you live in a hot climate should you consider the twin setup. In terms of performance, I believe it is negligible (time will prove me right or wrong here).

c) ease of instalation

I've installed both and the three-core is simpler, but that's only because there are less components to install -- and a whole lot less hose clamps to tighten!!

d) weight savings.

Possibly, but I don't think the weight difference is much. Those twin IC's are really small. Combined, they weigh less than the three-core.

Don't get me wrong, it is a awesome looking kit, but I just don't think I need it.

I agree. If you do not live in a hot climate, you don't need the twin setup.

Anyway, does anyone have any pics, part #'s, layouts or prices for setting up a Vortech w/ a ATI intercooler? How is the tubing run?

The tubing (and intercooler) on the underside of the car would be identical. The tubing in the engine compartment on the passenger side (discharge from the IC) would be identical. The only difference as best I can tell would be the 3-inch tubing from the blower to the 3-inch 90-degree elbow located in the driver's side fender (inlet to the IC).

What is the part # of the Intercooler? How much is it?

I will contact my ATI guy and ask specifics on this. You might be surprised to see that the twin-IC setup will NOT be that much more expensive than the three-core IC setup. I'm speciulating here, but I believe the difference will be ~$200.

Will it fit my GTA w/ twin electric fans?

Absolutely!!!

Willie

Thanks for the reply. Your information is always useful.
I ahve a few thoughts on the water to air intercoolers: Here goes: First off, Don't they cool better? I know that the water is contained and it is not a "wet" system, like on a boat, but still. Also, the plumbing on my setup might be easier. I would only have to run a straight pipe to the inlet on the intercooler, then directly back to the TB, w/ only one 90 degree bend. The water lines are going to be easy to run tho the seperate radiator, and I can put a resricting orface to raise the pressure on the one side and lower on the other side, to "force" out the heat, kind of like an a/c system. Wouldn't this be very effective? I could even run it to a tank in the rear that can be ice cooled for the track. Anyway, I'll probably go w/ the air to air intercooler. So, here are 3 more quick questions: a) how much is the ATI setup that I will need? b) doesn't somebody have one for sale? (was it you Willie?) c) do I have to cut holes where the battery trays would be to ntall the feed and return pipes to the intercooler? Also, what's the deal w/ those Vortech aftercoolers? How do theywork? Thanks a lot.

Vortech aftercoolers are liquid/air intercoolers.

Good luck fitting one in yoru car too.

I have some photos at home of a guy who put an ATI intercooler on his 3rd gen with a Vortech SC. I can upload them this weekend sometime when I am back at home.

He had to get the curved discharge installed on the back of his compressor though.

Thanks, any other pics out there. That one looks nice, but it looks like a totally different discharge on the blower. Mine comes straight out the side facing the passenger firewall. Did he get a different casing for his blower or something. How exactly did he do that? Are there any other intercooled Vortech cars out there w/ the same style blower casing as mine?

Here is what I did.

Now I just need to decide which intercooler.

Try this too.

I went to both of those threads. The first has no pics, and no pics were coming up on the second thread. Just little boxes w/ an x in it. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any links w/ pics. Thanks very much for all your help.

The first thread explains how I was able to rotate my Vortech housing like the procharger has it.

The second thread had a few more pics of the that was poseted in this thread. I have alot of pics at work. I'll post them tommorow.

Again that is not my car.

My outlet is just like yours. You have to see my car some time to show you what I had to grind off the mounting bracket. It not to big of a job to do. I did it in a couple of hours one Saturday, while the bracket was mounted in the car.
