You could be just like the guy who strapped an assist jet to his impalla and hit a mountain at over 400+ mph. Officials thought it was a plane crash on first investigation. He had 8 miles of straight desert road to run on and still couldn't get it done safely.

That was because he wasn't driving a third gen

Nothing like having a mountain in the middle of the road - and usually deserts don't have mountains.

Yeah, he just ran out of desert. The great American Southwest. The most g0d forsaken place in the country. Well, I guess the badlands are pretty bad too. There is absolutely nothing in either of those places except canyons and buttes. A little town every now and again. Definately places you don't want to get stranded.

The problem with rocket engines is they are either on or off. Not to mention a solid fuel rocket is on till it's out of fuel. No way to turn those off. I don't know if the whole JATO Impala is true or not, but you'd have to be a complete imbecile to do that. The JATO packs were used to help the old C130 cargo planes launch on smaller runways. These planes weigh well over 100 tons loaded. I've heard the story, and I've heard views that it was myth and truth. My opinion is it's probably not true, but I wouldn't be that surprised if it was. The results of such an experiment would pretty much be what the story said.

I've seen a c130 do a jet assisted take off at an airshow. It was incredible to see something that big accelerate so fast, and take of with such a short ammount of runway.

hey guys
the impala story is true
some nut case decided to strap a jato(jet assisted takeoff)bottle to his car and ligfht it off
like it was said before this device does not shut off until it is out of fuel!
he didn't quite reach 400mph though
the impala basically melted the tires/brakes and other running gear and left the ground (became airborne)
yes they did find him on the side of a mountain (can you say splat?)
they also found where the car left the ground and his starting point!

i am in aviation maintenance so i hear alot of stuff
i will try to find the article and post it

The story is not true. Its an urban legend.
